Why are so many adult children cutting off their parents? And why do so many parents feel they are not allowed to talk about it?
In the first episode of Hi, Kids! — Reasoned Conversations in a Divided Generation, we address a difficult and increasingly common reality: family estrangement.
Across the country, more parents are quietly experiencing distance, silence, and “no-contact” relationships with their adult children. Many carry this pain in private, afraid that speaking honestly will be misunderstood or seen as dismissing real harm.
At the same time, powerful words like “abuse,” “toxic,” and “trauma” are appearing more frequently in family conflicts, sometimes without a clear definition or distinction.
As a former law enforcement officer who has personally seen real abuse, and as parents who have experienced family fracture ourselves, we approach this conversation with both gravity and honesty.
This episode is not about minimizing real harm.
It is about asking difficult questions that many families are quietly wrestling with.
In this conversation, we explore:
• The cultural expansion of language around harm
• The difference between conflict and abuse
• How modern comfort can reshape expectations inside families
• The role communities and online spaces now play in reinforcing estrangement
• And why Luke 15 may not be a story about one prodigal son, but TWO
We also examine the historical and theological depth of the Prodigal Son narrative, including cultural contexts often overlooked, and what it might mean for Christian families navigating conflict today.
Because the deeper question is this:
What happens to families when reconciliation disappears from our cultural vocabulary?
Let’s talk about it.
