Nl: De zon scheen fel door de grote ramen van het appartement aan de gracht.
En: The sun shone brightly through the large windows of the apartment by the canal.

Nl: Het was een warme zomerdag in Amsterdam.
En: It was a warm summer day in Amsterdam.

Nl: Binnen, te midden van schilderijen en moderne meubels, stond Kees geërgerd naar een brief op tafel te staren.
En: Inside, amid paintings and modern furniture, Kees stood glaring at a letter on the table, his hands trembling with anger.

Nl: Zijn handen trilden van boosheid.
En: "Marijke, what is this?"

Nl: "Marijke, wat is dit?"
En: he asked with a frown.

Nl: vroeg hij met een gefronste blik.
En: Marijke, a woman in a neat suit, walked into the room and saw the letter.

Nl: Marijke, een vrouw in een net pak, liep de kamer in en zag de brief.
En: She sighed deeply.

Nl: Ze zuchtte diep.
En: "Kees, it’s just a letter," she began cautiously.

Nl: "Kees, het is gewoon een brief," begon ze voorzichtig.
En: "Just a letter?!"

Nl: "Gewoon een brief?!"
En: Kees exclaimed.

Nl: riep Kees uit.
En: "It says you’ve been invited to an art exhibition!

Nl: "Er staat dat je bent uitgenodigd voor een kunsttentoonstelling!
En: Why did I know nothing about this?"

Nl: Waarom wist ik hier niets van?"
En: Marijke looked down, her face red.

Nl: Marijke keek naar beneden, haar gezicht rood.
En: "It’s not what you think," she said softly.

Nl: "Het is niet wat je denkt," zei ze zachtjes.
En: Kees threw his hands in the air.

Nl: Kees wierp zijn handen in de lucht.
En: "Not what I think?

Nl: "Niet wat ik denk?
En: Are you hiding things from me?

Nl: Verberg je dingen voor me?
En: Do you have a secret lover?

Nl: Heb je een geheime minnaar?
En: Or another life I know nothing about?"

Nl: Of een ander leven waarvan ik niets weet?"
En: Marijke shook her head.

Nl: Marijke schudde haar hoofd.
En: "Not everything revolves around you, Kees," she said sharply.

Nl: "Niet alles draait om jou, Kees," zei ze scherp.
En: "I just...

Nl: "Ik heb gewoon... ik wilde niet dat je je slecht zou voelen."
En: I didn’t want you to feel bad."

Nl: Kees stond stil en keek haar aan.
En: Kees stood still and looked at her.

Nl: "Slecht voelen?
En: "Feel bad?

Nl: Waarom zou ik me slecht voelen?"
En: Why would I feel bad?"

Nl: Marijke zuchtte diep en pakte de brief.
En: Marijke sighed deeply and picked up the letter.

Nl: "Ik ben uitgenodigd voor deze kunsttentoonstelling omdat ik mijn eigen schilderijen heb ingestuurd.
En: "I was invited to this art exhibition because I submitted my own paintings.

Nl: Ik... ik schilder al jaren."
En: I... I’ve been painting for years."

Nl: Er was een lange stilte in de kamer.
En: There was a long silence in the room.

Nl: Kees wist niet wat hij moest zeggen.
En: Kees didn’t know what to say.

Nl: Uiteindelijk sprak hij, zijn stem zacht.
En: Eventually, he spoke, his voice soft.

Nl: "Waarom heb je dit voor me verborgen?"
En: "Why did you hide this from me?"

Nl: Marijke keek hem aan, haar ogen vol tranen.
En: Marijke looked at him, her eyes full of tears.

Nl: "Omdat ik niet wilde dat je dacht dat ik beter was dan jij.
En: "Because I didn’t want you to think I was better than you.

Nl: Jij bent de kunstenaar hier.
En: You’re the artist here.

Nl: Ik wilde je niet overschaduwen."
En: I didn’t want to overshadow you."

Nl: Kees liep langzaam naar haar toe.
En: Kees walked slowly towards her.

Nl: "Laat me je schilderijen zien," zei hij kalm.
En: "Show me your paintings," he said calmly.

Nl: Met bevende handen leidde Marijke hem naar een kleine kamer achterin het appartement.
En: With trembling hands, Marijke led him to a small room at the back of the apartment.

Nl: Daar, verborgen achter een gordijn, stonden haar schilderijen.
En: There, hidden behind a curtain, were her paintings.

Nl: Schitterende landschappen, portretten met diepe emoties en abstracte werken vol kleur.
En: Stunning landscapes, portraits with deep emotions, and abstract works full of color.

Nl: Kees keek met open mond.
En: Kees looked with his mouth open.

Nl: "Marijke, dit is...
En: "Marijke, this is...

Nl: prachtig."
En: beautiful."

Nl: Marijke bloosde.
En: Marijke blushed.

Nl: "Bedankt," mompelde ze.
En: "Thank you," she muttered.

Nl: Kees draaide zich naar haar om.
En: Kees turned to her.

Nl: "Waarom heb je dit verborgen gehouden?
En: "Why have you kept this hidden?

Nl: Je hebt zoveel talent."
En: You have so much talent."

Nl: Marijke haalde diep adem.
En: Marijke took a deep breath.

Nl: "Omdat ik je niet wilde kwetsen."
En: "Because I didn’t want to hurt you."

Nl: Kees schudde zijn hoofd.
En: Kees shook his head.

Nl: "Je hebt me niet gekwetst.
En: "You haven’t hurt me.

Nl: Je hebt me geïnspireerd."
En: You’ve inspired me."

Nl: Die avond zaten ze samen aan de keukentafel, te praten en te lachen.
En: That evening, they sat together at the kitchen table, talking and laughing.

Nl: Voor de eerste keer in lange tijd voelde Kees zich vol nieuwe ideeën.
