In July 2007, a nightmare descended upon the Petit family home in Cheshire, Connecticut, when Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky broke inside. After committing brutal acts of violence against Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, Hayley and Michaela, the perpetrators set the house on fire to conceal their crimes. Dr. William Petit, though suffering severe injuries from a savage assault, managed to survive and escape. The two murderers were ultimately held accountable for their heinous actions, receiving sentences of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
