Over the history of the church the Christian faith has had its pioneers – men and women who have pushed the boundaries, who have crossed borders, who have broken new ground for the sake of the gospel. Isaiah 52:7 says “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation…” Of course not everyone sees that it is good news, indeed many initially reject the gospel and abuse those who carry it – it is not easy. But we are here today partly because someone at some time brought the good news to Ireland – Patrick and others. It is interesting that Patrick himself had a vision to come over to Ireland a bit like Paul’s Macedonian vision.

This is how the gospel is spread – God uses people, often courageous and passionate people to spread the good news.

In this passage, Paul deals with human beings and he knows that though we are Christians and saved sinners, we are still sinners. We are a work in progress and we need help, guidance and sometimes warning and admonishment.

What will it take to advance the kingdom of God today? We are living in interesting and challenging days for the church. The Christian culture in the western world is in decline, more than that it is being vigorously opposed by liberal elites in society. These are hard days to stand for orthodox Christian beliefs which once informed everything from our education system, our hospitals and our government to our press and media. Yet we should not give up hope. Things have been worse.
