Birmingham, Alabama, is gearing up for an exciting year in high school football, and the buzz is palpable. The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has announced that the Super 7 Football Championships will be returning to Birmingham’s Protective Stadium in 2025.
This decision, made at the AHSAA Central Board meeting, marks a significant shift in the hosting rotation. Previously, Tuscaloosa and Auburn were part of the rotation, but due to the new College Football Playoff format, they have been removed. Instead, Birmingham will share the hosting duties with Mobile’s Hancock-Whitney Stadium, home of the University of South Alabama Jaguars and the Senior Bowl.
The schedule for the upcoming years is set: the 2025 championships will be held at Protective Stadium, followed by Hancock-Whitney Stadium in 2026, and then back to Protective Stadium in 2027, and so on. This rotation promises to bring high-energy games to both cities, enhancing the overall experience for players, coaches, and fans.
Birmingham has already proven itself as a stellar host, having drawn over 41,269 fans in 2024 and setting a Super 7 attendance record with more than 62,000 fans in 2021. David Galbaugh, VP of Sports Sales & Marketing at the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitor Bureau, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming the AHSAA and teams back to the city in 2025 and 2027.
The 2024 season wrapped up with thrilling state championship games, including Thompson winning the Class 7A title by defeating Phenix City Central 21-7, and Parker claiming the Class 6A title with a 28-17 victory over Saraland. These matches showcased the talent and dedication of Alabama’s high school football teams.
Looking ahead to the 2025 season, teams are already gearing up. For instance, the Saraland Spartans have announced their schedule, which includes matches against strong opponents like Jackson, Montgomery Catholic, and Spanish Fort. This promises a season filled with intense competition and exciting matchups.
As the football community in Birmingham and beyond prepares for another year of gridiron battles, the anticipation is building. With top-notch venues, passionate fans, and talented teams, Alabama high school football is set to continue its tradition of excellence and excitement. So mark your calendars, because the Super 7 is coming back to Birmingham, and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.
