  • #004 Wild Wild Country on Netflix

This week on Highbrow Reviews, we watch Netflix’s cult classic,Wild Wild Country! Surprise, surprise, we talk about drinking the Kool-Aid and the Indianapolis Colts for a solid couple minutes. Then, for this week’s game, What the Cult? we cover Raelism, Order of the Solar Temple and the Manson Family, breaking down for you exactly what each of them stand for.
As we watch the first episode of the show, we not only enjoy the hot older men featured but declare at which point we would drop out of the Rajneeshi clan ourselves.

  • #003 PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds video game [w/ Cris Mertens]

On this episode of Highbrow Reviews, we enlist video game aficionado Cris Mertens to show us PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG)! As a special treat, hear us experience the game in real-time as we attempt (and fail) to stay alive. Plus, a game called Weed Association…and a whole lot more!
On the drive over to play the game at Cris’ place, we quickly learn that none of us know much about this video game… or video games in general, except for Max who must make it absolutely clear that he has some, albeit limited, gaming cred. Unfortunately for us, we’ll be playing this game for the first time with a bunch of strangers online and the likelihood that any of us will be good is slim to none.
Upon arrival, we meet Cris’ puppy, Penny. She’s a wiener dog with a small body but a large bladder that she graciously unloads on Max. Cris has got a great setup with multiple monitors and surround sound but no snacks. Hunger will have to wait though, because the game is about to begin. Cris shows us the ropes along with his friend Josh who will be playing alongside each of us as we take turn at the keyboard.

Claire goes first. Does she like this kind of battle royale, war game played with random people on the internet? No. Is she any good at it? Probably not. Chris follows next and his mind is in the closet. He spends most of his time styling his character to perfection but will the purple vest and new haircut save him in the end? Max finishes us out with some truly heroic maneuvers but is his outstanding cred enough to crown him winner, winner, chicken dinner? Listen to find out.

After playing our hearts out, we return to the studio with Cris to learn more about PUBG and review our experience. As we suspected, Cris has all the information is kind of a pro player himself. I wouldn’t say we feel bad about ourselves in comparison, but there is a clear divide in skill. Anyway! No one is bitter…

Just as we’re wrapping up the show, Cris reveals that being a guest has been a long-con game of his own to bust us for getting high. Is this where the podcast ends? Only three glorious episodes before we’re all carted off to jail while Mayor Eric Garcetti awards Cris the keys to the city for his unprecedented undercover performance? No, of course not. If you fell for that, then you’re probably high because don’t forget, in California, weed is legal.

  • #002 The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel [with Curtis Rainsberry]

On this episode of Highbrow Reviews, we welcome our first ever guest to the show, UCB funnyman and our friend, Curtis Rainsberry, who wants us to get high and review a TV show he really likes: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
But, as always, before Chris, Claire, and Max can review something, they need to get the little funny buzzies. To do that, they smoke some weed and play a game called Google Ganja. The premise is simple: someone suggests the beginning of a Google search and then they all guess what the top Google searches are going to be.
During the game, Chris wonders how old Yeller was, and Claire thinks people are always asking questions about Bibles. She has a point. Also, a psychic once told Claire’s boyfriend that his soul was so old that this was definitely his last time on Earth. This is a lot to take in.
After the rousing game concludes, we introduce our guest, Curtis Rainsberry. Max can’t get the name of the show right to save his life. Chris says that Amazon is like “The Whole Foods of the internet,” which Claire confirms because Whole Foods is literally owned by Amazon.
Because he’s weed-high, Chris suddenly remembers a random story from years ago, where he fell asleep watching MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, only to dream about the show exactly as it played, and then he knew everything that was talked about the next time he saw that episode replayed. It was very random, and very pointless. But hey, we’re high and this is what this podcast is all about.
Chris and Max are obsessed with the show’s reference to pube-bleaching. Claire, however, “didn’t find that notable.” Her loss. Everyone on the podcast loved the little boy train conductor played by Alex Borstein.
Max thinks the references to the ‘60s were very over-the-top, but Chris reminds us that it’s just a period piece. Soon, everybody admits whether they’ve seen a fox in real life. Has Claire? Hint: No. Claire shows off her Gilbert Gottfried impression. The rest of the crew probably forgets they’re doing a podcast and must assume we’re on the set of the Problem Child movie.
Claire has some very valid issues with the show and the team comes up with some good suggestions to fix them. Will the Golden Globe, Emmy, and Peabody Award-winning TV show accept our notes? Find out next season I guess.
What did everyone think about the show? Is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a good show to watch while stoned out of your silly minds? Listen to the full episode of the podcast to get all those pressing answers and a whole lot more!
