Romans is about favoritism, or the lack of it. Those of us who feel like God will mistreat or forget us because of who we are or what we’ve done, those we feel God should forget or mistreat because of who they are or what they’ve done, end up receiving the greatest award of all--salvation and the righteousness of God.

Sometimes someone saves us from ourself. David is frustrated and so starts bullying Nabal. Nabal responds foolishly, and David seeks a vengeance that will actually damage his future. Abigail prevents him from taking it. Sometimes we need someone to save us from ourselves. Which is exactly what Christ does.

We need wilderness, we need what it represents. Because these are the places where God’s people have encountered him in fresh ways. Where they’ve been reoriented.

The reality is that we all need help. We all need someone to push us, to pull us. We’re all walking a way that has terrain that is easy at times, but, more often than not, is mountainous and muddy. We’re David’s in need of a Jonathan. We need soul companions.

God knows our heart. He sees what no one else seems to see. He sees all that wonderful stuff that make us who we really all. All those emotions, those thoughts, those intentions, those personality traits of ours. He sees our heart. God sees us for who we really are. And he loves us for it. All of it.

Give God thanks this week for everything you do. Take joy in knowing that your skills, your physical energy, your intellect come from him. He’s the one who’s enabled you to perform well. Give him glory and credit even when it feels like it’s all up to you. Because the truth is that even then it was really all up to God.

Here’s the basic truth we learn from Samuel: When God acts in our lives, we need to set an Ebenezer, we need to record the act in a way that allows us to remember it. For some, this means writing it down in a journal. For some, it means taking a picture that symbolizes what happened. For some, it means posting about it on social media. For some, it means making something--a painting, pottery, or writing poetry. The important thing is to find a way to record God’s act in a way that allows you to go back and remember it. Why? Because we so often forget.
