We live in a world that moves from one great catastrophe to another. Media is designed to draw our attention with the claim that all situations are cataclysmic. How do we navigate a world that controls us with panic? Daniel can give us some practical help.

When Yahweh seems most hidden, absent, unavailable, or ineffective, when our situation feels hopeless, the Prophet Jeremiah announces that God is the one who overcomes hopelessness and opens up new possibilities. Instead of the certainty of a perfect plan, we’re given a long-term plan that cannot be defeated by any particular circumstance. There is a future with hope, given only by God. It’s a future that holds and heals the despair we experience. It’s a future full of peace. It’s a future absent of harm. God can bring us a future with hope. God will bring us a future with hope. God is giving us a future with hope.

Jonah hated his enemies in Nineveh so much that he didn’t want to deliver them the warning God was sending to them because he was afraid they might actually listen to God who would show them mercy, and he did not want them to be shown any mercy. Apparently, God loves our enemies a lot more than we do! Good thing because there are others who consider us their enemy, whether for being Americans or white or black or gay or straight or wealthy or homeless or liberal or conservative; just as we have people who we think are the “enemy”, there always people who will consider us to be the enemy and don’t want any good thing to happen to us. But God gets to show mercy on us even when they don’t just as God shows mercy to those we think are the enemy. We don’t always like how God God is!

In whom will we trust? Jeremiah makes the choice crystal clear, but not easy. Trust and surrender are where the prophets call us. Trust is a complex decision we make more than once, but the first time we’re aware of trusting God lays the groundwork for a deeper life. It also sets the course for a life of flourishing and peace. Whichever choice we make, whomever we choose to trust, we should know that there will be pain and suffering ahead. But when we choose to trust Christ, we will be like a tree near the water, a tree whose shade comforts and whose roots go deep, a tree that is not fearful or anxious.

In this series, we are diving into a sermon series on the Hebrew Prophets, and an integral part of that will be exploring how the prophets saw and thought about reality. This Sunday, we explore “Prophetic Thinking”, in hopes that the prophets’ critical and radical engagement with their ancient world might impact ours today. From Israel’s Temple, to cats, to Zombies, and Hitler, this sermon contains several images intended to expose the urgent importance for us all to embrace the responsibility we have to deploy our power — the power of the people — for the wellbeing of one another. And this kind of authentic and responsible living, that critically questions the status-quo that imprisons so many of us, will usually require the courage to push the boundaries to which we’ve become accustomed. In order to make our “tents of belonging” bigger and more inclusive, we often need to start by taking those tents down and challenging our own, habitual thinking.

Our Fall Series on the Prophets will very likely rock our world. The world of the Hebrew people was turned upside down by the convergence of the words of prophets like Jeremiah and the power of Yahweh. The Hebrew Prophets are intense and terrifying as they lead us to the Glorious God of all Creation, the God who watches over us with eternal love. This is the same God we find in Christ caring for the poor, the powerless, and the oppressed. We begin our study of the Prophets with Jeremiah, as we open our hearts to a bigger vision of God.

Healing the blind is a big part of the wonderful work Jesus does. God wants us to see, to REALLY see one another and to see Christ clearly for who we all are. They say “seeing is believing” but in the Kingdom of God, truly seeing is belonging.

Jesus says that our hearts follow what we treasure. Doing the work of connecting and belonging is like storing up treasures in heaven, treasures that will not get corroded, consumed, or stolen from us. Since we are already the beloved of God, we are free to seek the belonging for which we yearn. And if we dig just a little deeper to find the treasure of belonging, we discover that God also has a passionate yearning for communion with us.

The very first stories in the Bible talk about how humans have pulled apart what God joined together, hidden from one another and God and have been longing for unity every since. We feel it in our bones. We want to belong but so often we’re just longing to be: to be loved, known and cherished for who we are. The Jesus mission was to bring together in unity the diversity that has been living apart.
