Is your walk with GOD stale? Are the same old things just not working as you try to get closer to God? You might be lacking in humility. True humility is infinitely deeper than contrition, groveling, or weakness. It is the root of grace; it is participation in the life of Jesus. And humility gives us rest for our souls.

In the Bible, Wisdom is what it says is most to be sought after for a rich and robust community. But wisdom does not make it in the top 10 list when thousands of people are asked what the 10 things they want to strive for most in life. Is wisdom now passè or is it what we need more than ever?

For James, a faith that doesn’t produce real life change is a faith that’s worthless, as dead as a corpse. One of James’ highest priorities was the treatment of the poor, and so in James chapter 2, we are urged to pay attention to the most vulnerable among us. James inspires us to do something good in the world because our faith is alive.

The dinner party in Luke chapter 7 takes us deeper on our journey of being forgiven and forgiving ourselves. Being forgiven much empowers us to love much. Forgiving ourselves frees us to love and be loved even more. Entering into the challenge of forgiving ourselves allows us to forgive others more generously.

The biblical language around forgiveness is often taken from the world of commerce, of debts incurred and debts release, of assessing the toll both to build and to forgive. Forgiveness is necessary for any and all our relationships to be healthy and have the capacity for growth. We grossly underestimate what is at stake when we light dismiss the consequences of having been wounded or cause the wounds of others or when we refuse to forgive or even consider it. The way forward is always through forgiveness.

Any relationship that involves any party that isn’t perfect will need the giving and receiving of forgiveness for love to abide and abound. Because God chose to create us for relationship God’s mercy has been integral to making it work. What role does mercy play in our relationships?

In a time when there more people living than ever, but more people who are lonely than ever, we need to return to the magic of sharing meals together to mend our sense of isolation and bring us into joyful community.
