The cantankerous torch has been officially passed! “Best Sellers” is the directorial debut of Lina Roessler that sees Lucy Stanbridge (Aubrey Plaza) struggling to keep the legacy of her father’s publishing house alive amidst the pressure of a sale to an old flame (Scott Speedman). But when sees an opportunity to keep the lights on with the release of a new book by famed but retired, alcoholic, and SUPER-cranky author Harris Shaw (Michael Caine), she takes it. She is NOT prepared for the nightmarish book tour with him to promote it. Our own literary scholars Bradley, Jordan, Rae, and Ryan put on their finest smoking jackets and wax poetically on if this film is worthy of academic achievements or should be relegated to the bargain bin of your local library sale.

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. BLUE BAYOU MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/Director/Producer/ and star of “Blue Bayou”, Justin Chon, is clearly a force to be reckoned with. Here on his fourth feature film he’s directed and written, he plays Korean-American adopted immigrant Antonio LeBlanc, living just outside New Orleans with his very pregnant wife Kathy (Alicia Vikander) and her daughter from a previous relationship, Jesse. Antonio does his best to scrape out a living as a tattoo artist, looking for extra work everywhere, but a troubled past with a few felonies keeps him from getting hired anywhere else. When he gets on the wrong side of Kathy’s ex (a cop), he ends up arrested and then sent to an ICE detention center. Despite being adopted as a very small child in America, because of red tape errors, he finds he’s now going to be pushed towards being deported to a country he doesn’t know at all…like so, so, many others. This is a very political film that seems for awhile like it’s just a bucolic, slow burn, character drama. And there’s so much to admire here, especially in terms of Chon’s fantastic direction. And we’re totally here with the message it’s trying to send out. But. Just….but. Listen to Chris, Adrian, Brad, and Wright give you the details.

Adrian El Critico (Screener Squad)

Though born and raised in Chicago, this film critic is Mexican to the bone. Adrian has been watching movies since he was a child, many of which might not have been age appropriate. Still, he couldn’t get enough. All throughout his life, friends and family would look to him for his recommendations and reviews on whatever films had come their way. Inspired earlier in life by the likes of Ebert and Roper at The Movies and then later Spill.com, Adrian decided film criticism and analysis provided a great outlet to further his love of film. He began to craft his reviews and thoughts on film in ways he thought would be accessible to devout film hounds as well as the casual viewer. Mixing in jokes, entertaining observations and robust critical analysis, Adrian El Critico may be new to OneOfUs, but he is already making a name for himself on our site. Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize,

KATE MOVIE REVIEW

It’s not easy to be an unstoppable female assassin who is thinking about getting out of the business only to have to deal with killing more people than ever before. At least, it is this year. I mean, there’s been a lot of competition. Netflix’s “Kate” drops the tongue-in-cheek jokiness of several of this year’s other somewhat similar entries in the sub-genre (“Jolt”, “Gunpowder Milkshake”, “The Protege”) as Mary Elizabeth Winstead assumes more of the straight-ahead brutal kills and action choreography of something like “Nobody” or “John Wick”. Which is NOT to say new ground is tread here either. Her character finds that someone has fatally poisoned her and like in the noir classic “D.O.A.”, is bent on finding out who did it and getting revenge before her time runs out. Only here, killing almost everyone she meets along the way. Except for the niece of a powerful Yakuza head who she drags along with her for the ride. Chris, Jordan, Rose, and Tessa put in their support for this film and for Winstead to play Ripley’s daughter in this by the numbers but very well made thriller.

AMERICAN HORROR STORIES – SEASON 1 REVIEW

Ryan Murphy horror fans, it’s time to get ready for the first anthology season spin-off of their beloved long-running show. Or should you? We had a mixed-to-bad reaction to this 7 episode season, 3 of which were direct sequels to the “Murder House” season of AHS. The rest tread rather familiar ground to long-time horror fans but they do feature lots of familiar faces from the Murphy-verse (are we saying that?). I hear you, it’s only seven episodes, how bad could it be? Well, at least some of our crew consisting of Chris, Frank, Adrian, and Jena will tell you…pretty damn bad.

MALIGNANT MOVIE REVIEW

In director/co-writer James Wan’s latest foray into schlocky fun spoopyness, Annabelle Wallis plays Madison, who after finding her abusive husband has been murderized to an extreme degree by some sort of…shape, starts having experiences where she seems to be able to see other murders as they happen from this black-clad, superhumanly agile figure. Only, how do you have that conversation with the police? As the film goes on, more and more is revealed about both who or what this killer might be and the terrifying (or super-silly, depending on your viewpoint) connection back to Madison. Chris, Rae, and Tessa weren’t of the crowd who can’t stop raving about this one, nor did they fall into the equally as loud  ‘I don’t get it’ crowd. Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

ULTRA CITY SMITHS SERIES REVIEW

Tom Waits narrates this stop-motion animated noir thriller that delves into a world with alley cats abandoning their alleys for picket fences and howling at a moon that shines over the city. In the dead of night, a baby howls back at them, sitting abandoned outside a police station. Maybe that baby was crying out for justice like we all were. Maybe that baby was wailing for the warm embrace of its mother, hungry enough to forget how cold it is but much too hungry to remember when the last meal it had even was. Maybe it pooped itself and sobbed for a changing; the city didn’t care. With an election on the horizon and a murder rigging the results for change no one was sure what tomorrow would bring but everybody knew that the smoking gun belonged to a Smith, but which one? Bradly, Mindy, and Harmoni discuss the latest animated feature from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, “Ultra City Smiths”. They ask the dangerous questions like, is there still a place for stop motion in the animation line up? Can a musical number hinder a story? How big a cast is too big a cast? And why use kewpie dolls to tell a story of a murder?

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

MARTYRS LANE MOVIE REVIEW

If you have a yung’un comin’ of age and you want to start bringing ’em into the world of spooky movies or if you’re a fan of the lightly scary but big on atmosphere gothicy ghost stories, Shudder has a new entry just for you. “Martyrs Lane” follows a ten year old girl named Leah who lives in a big, old, vicarage with her priestly but often absent father and her mother who seems to always have something else on her mind and is more than a little stressed out. Leah often has to find her own amusements and when she meets another girl about her age in the woods, she’s happy to have made a new friend. Soon, the other child, wearing a shabby angel costume, begins visiting her at night in her room, tapping on her window for entry, and they play games that aren’t really games, as the quickly becoming obvious not a normal little girl starts leading Leah on a hunt for the hidden letters that will spell her name. What does it all mean? What does this “girl” want? Are we too old and jaded for this one? We had differing opinions here so listen to Chris, Brad, Beau, and Lewayne suss it out.

WORTH MOVIE REVIEW

How much is life worth? What price can you put on a human life to bring peace to those left behind? To be clear, we didn’t record a new philosophy podcast. This is the question asked by the true story of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Following the horrific 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Congress appoints attorney and renowned mediator Kenneth Feinberg (Michael Keaton) to lead the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. Assigned with allocating financial resources to the victims of the tragedy, Feinberg and his firm’s head of operations, Camille Biros (Amy Ryan), face the impossible task of determining the worth of a life to help the families who had suffered immeasurable losses. When Feinberg locks horns with Charles Wolf (Stanley Tucci), a community organizer mourning the death of his wife, his initial cynicism turns to compassion as he begins to learn the true human costs of the tragedy. Melina, Bradly, and T.C. set the jokes and gags aside to discuss this sincere look at only a portion of the sadness and struggle that came after the Towers fell and the Pentagon burned.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

THE CHAIR MOVIE REVIEW

Class is now in session! Netflix’s “The Chair”, starring Sandra Oh and Jay Duplass, launched recently, taking a look into the complicated world of academia as it brushes up against a modern, ever-changing world. Oh plays Dr. Kim, the first woman of color to sit at the head of the English department at Pembroke University on the cusp of backlash from her peers and a mounting campaign to strip a fellow professor (Duplass) of his job. Many words have been used to describe Davey Peppers. Words like “Eh” and “Please go outside, just once”. He studied film and advertising at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, because two degrees in fields with terrible job placement is better than one, and currently runs the YouTube channel Game Mechanics. He is easily distracted by shiny things and even the most basic passing mention of a movie being sad. He can be found on Twitter as well as staring at a blank wall wondering what the point is, and if his spending so much time staring at walls is the reason he’s not funny.

 

 

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Mark Prince (Screener Squad)

Mark Prince is a lifelong nerd so old he remembers the first edition of Dungeons and Dragons, the original Star Wars in the theater, and comics that cost a quarter and could be found on racks in the local apothecary. By day, a mere human services worker, by night he emerges to combat boredom, master the vagaries of the B grade television serial, the C grade cinematic release, and to ever assist his fellow man, as well as to master, once and for all, the Shoryuken Dragon Punch with ever stiffening thumbs.
