HE’S ALL THAT MOVIE REVIEW

“He’s All That” is a remake of “She’s All That”, which was a reimagining of “My Fair Lady”, which was a musical reimagining of the 1913 play “Pygmalion”. So, we’ve come a long way to get to this Netflix “original” film. Padgett Sawyer (real-life Social Media princess Addison Rae in her debut film) is an Instagram influencer in her final year of high school in wealthy, movie world, Southern California, free of the dirt or grime or any sense of reality. She lives with her divorced mother who is a local nurse (Rachael Leigh Cook who starred in “She’s All That”). Padgett discovers her boyfriend, fellow influencer and aspiring hip hop artist Jordan (Peyton Meyer), is cheating on her with a back-up dancer. Padgett is further humiliated when a live stream of their breakup, where she cries to the point of snot dripping from her nose, goes viral. This results in her loss of sponsorship, which is totally a thing social media personalities have. Yeah, paid to post. It’s a thing. To redeem herself, she accepts a challenge to turn the school’s least popular boy, Cameron Kweller (Tanner Buchanan), into prom king. And oh boy, is this going to be a challenge. He has longish hair and always wears a stocking cap. And he takes pictures with an actual film camera. I mean, like, what? What a loser. He doesn’t even have an Insta. He only has a Twitter that he used once, like, five years ago to post only the word, “NO.” I mean, like, this is practically impossible. There’s no way Padgett is going to turn this gross boy with only one friend into the prom king. Like, yeah, I mean, he has like super gorgeous eyes, or whatevs. Nbd. But, like, there’s no way. So, pop your best Snap filters, kick it with a Boba tea, and listen to Rae, Marcos, Mark, and T.C. totally review this movie, okay?. ELLIE & ABBIE (& ELLIE’S DEAD AUNT) MOVIE REVIEW

Sometimes we cherish the memories of the loved ones we’ve lost in our life, sometimes we are haunted by them, and sometimes, they literally manifest themselves in front of us and end up being our own harassing guardian angels. And that’s exactly what happens in writer/director Monica Zanetti’s debut feature “Ellie & Abbie (and Ellie’s Dead Aunt)” which was adapted from Zanetti’s 2016 stage play and ultimately crowdfunded into existence when no one appeared to have faith in an LGBTQ rom-com. As seventeen-year-old Ellie (Sophie Hawkshaw) struggles to find the right way to ask her crush Abbie (Zoe Terakes) to the school formal, she proudly and bluntly comes out to her mom (Marta Dusseldorp), causing a rift between the pair, mediated by their family friend, Patty (Rachel House). On her journey of summoning the courage to ask Abbie out, or alternatively, being rejected, she is suddenly haunted by her dead Aunt Tara (Julia Billington), an LGBT rights activist who died in the 1980s. Aunt Tara doesn’t want to be called a ghost though, but rather a ‘fairy’ godmother, a pun she is quite proud of. Jordan, Trevor, Matt, and T.C. chat about this crowd funded, Aussie coming out and coming of age tale, and trade stories of their own promposals.

THE WITCHER: NIGHTMARE OF THE WOLF MOVIE REVIEW

Need something to tide you over until The Witcher season two? Netflix heard your cries for help and gave you an appetizer with this original anime movie. Developed by the “Avatar”/”The Legend of Korra” animators Studio Miur, this movie follows Vesemir (Theo James), who is destined to become the mentor of series protagonist Geralt of Rivia. After a chance encounter with a witcher named Deglan (Graham McTavish), he decides to leave his small town in hopes for a life of adventure. Unfortunately, the world of The Witcher is cruel, and Vesemir must face many challenges that will continue to define his character and decide the fate of those he cares for. Justin, Neil, and Dogget hoped this movie would fill in valuable lore knowledge or at the bare minimum provide an entertaining diversion until the new season comes out. Did it achieve at either of these goals? Find out in our review.

Justin’s fate as a movie fanatic was written in the stars when his birth forced his parents to cancel their planned Oscar viewing party. THE LAST MATINEE MOVIE REVIEW

Just when we thought it was safe to go back to movie theaters, someone had to come along and ruin it. No, not those guys… Well, them too… But, in “The Last Matinee”, it’s a black-gloved, knife-wielding, killer who decided the Opera Cinema was the place to murder and mutilate a handful of people one rainy night. Reluctantly, Adrian El Critico leads Trevor and Lewayne in a discussion of this retro-Giallo homage/dopamine-trigger from Uruguay. Along the way, the guys ponder whether there are enough throwback movies yet, if eyeballs actually crunch when you chew them, and what the hell is up with the geography of the theater. REMINISCENCE MOVIE REVIEW

Hey kids! Do you like “Westworld”? Do you like its novel storytelling approach, it’s tight structure and it’s ability to be both realistic and futuristic at the same time? Then you probably won’t like “Reminiscence”. Then again, maybe you will. If that sounds conflicting, it’s because this noir-ish romantic thriller from “Westworld” creator Lisa Joy (that’s also set in the near future) is itself a conflicting exercise. Hugh Jackman stars as Nick, the owner of a business that lets people relive specific memories through sessions in a water tank. When one of his clients (an intriguing Rebecca Ferguson) steals his heart before disappearing, his quest to find her leads him down a trail that includes drugs and corruption. Listen as Frank, Jordan and Santiago delve into why this movie’s stumbling nature makes it ultimately not work, but why each of them would love to watch it again.

MOSQUITO STATE MOVIE REVIEW

Writer director Filip Jan Rymsza presents “Mosquito State”, a film about a a wealthy Wall Street data analyst with an infestation of bloodsucking mosquitoes crashing his penthouse overlooking central park. The pests provoke plenty of paranoia for our protagonist while the housing crash of 2008 creeps ever closer. Beau Knapp plays the anxious auteur Richard Boca as he struggles with the chaotic data being spat out by his usually trusted computer programs, now professing utter disaster. Charlotte Vega as Lena del Alcázar is itching to know more about who Richard really is beneath the suit, tie, and swelling boils. Bradly, Melina, and Frank discuss the swarm of subtext, the comparison between mythical monsters and mosquitoes, and discuss whether or not this feature is profound, or a pest.

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

CANDYMAN MOVIE REVIEW

Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and Nia DaCosta got together to write, with DaCosta directing, this new ‘spiritual reimagining’ (but also honestly a straight-up sequel) to 1992’s celebrated (more now then on release) Clive Barker adaptation, “Candyman”. The film tells the story of a black artist (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) who discovers the urban legend of Candyman, and the stories surrounding the events of the first film. It brings to life his creative instinct as he creates a new series of art pieces centering around the legend, even featuring a mirror with ‘say my name’ written near it, encouraging gallery attenders to do the ONE THING we all know you should never do: say his name 5 times. Of course, it’s not long before someone does and the killings begin again as the mirrored killer surrounded by bees and with a hook for a hand starts wreaking havoc. But if you’ve seen the first film, you know Candyman isn’t just a random killer. He’s got a plan. For what that is, you’ll have to go see the movie yourself. Which is good, because Chris, Frank, Marco, and Wright REALLY recommend you do that, and won’t spoil it for you in this review.

NO MAN OF GOD MOVIE REVIEW

Another day, another film about Ted Fucking Bundy. Nobody asked for more movies about America’s notorious boy-next-door/serial killer/rapist/necrophile/scumbag but that hasn’t stopped people from making more of them. Fortunately, “No Man of God” from director Amber Sealey and writer Kit Lesser (a pseudonym for a writer familiar to old Spill.com fans) is anchored by great performances from Elijah Wood and Luke Kirby. Real life FBI profiler Bill Hagmaier (Wood) is a devoutly religious man tasked with interviewing Ted Bundy (Kirby) on death row. Bundy is a notoriously difficult interview subject, but Hagmaier is able to build a rapport with him. Based on the actual transcripts, the long interview scenes make for a riveting two-man play, as each man tries to get into the other man’s head. The movie shifts gears when the governor of Florida fast tracks Bundy’s execution. Instead of the typical 60 days, Bundy only has a single week to appeal his execution. Will Bundy keep his promise to Hagmaier and make a full confession? Or is he just playing games to buy himself more time? Our group of hardened cinema profilers Adrian, Trevor, Melina and Marco interrogated one another and are ready to confess how they felt about this movie.

Inspired earlier in life by the likes of Ebert and Roper at The Movies and then later Spill.com, Adrian decided film criticism and analysis provided a great outlet to further his love of film. He began to craft his reviews and thoughts on film in ways he thought would be accessible to devout film hounds as well as the casual viewer. Mixing in jokes, entertaining observations and robust critical analysis, Adrian El Critico may be new to OneOfUs, but he is already making a name for himself on our site. Trevor Trujillo (Screener Squad)

Trevor T. Trujillo is a One Of Us contributor in addition to being the co-host, co-founder, and co-producer of the Nighthawks Podcast. Trevor’s 17-year media career spans multiple arenas including television, radio, podcasting, and online journalism; and he is currently the editor-in-chief for a regional online news provider in the Rocky Mountain West. Often a nomad, Trevor has found himself “at home” in places like Austin, Texas; West Hollywood, California; and throughout central and southeastern Wyoming. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Many words have been used to describe Davey Peppers. Words like “Eh” and “Please go outside, just once”. He studied film and advertising at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, because two degrees in fields with terrible job placement is better than one, and currently runs the YouTube channel Game Mechanics. He is easily distracted by shiny things and even the most basic passing mention of a movie being sad. He can be found on Twitter as well as staring at a blank wall wondering what the point is, and if his spending so much time staring at walls is the reason he’s not funny.

Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

 

 

SUPERMAN AND LOIS SERIES REVIEW

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s SCREENER SQUAD! A group of mild-mannered reviewers came together to review “Superman and Lois”, the newest CW Arrowverse show. The show follows Lois Lane and Clark Kent moving to Smallville after one of their twin sons develops super powers. Smallville turns out to not be the quiet small town they were hoping for when the nefarious Morgan Edge shows up with promises of jobs for the struggling town. Making matters even more complicated, Clark is being hunted by a man with a grudge against Superman! It’s up to the Kent family to stop whatever Morgan Edge has planned for Smallville and hopefully become stronger as a family in the process. Eliot, Jordan, Doggett, and Spider-Mike discuss what may be the best live action Superman property in decades.
