In Tom Clancy’s spin-off from his Jack Ryan series, “Without Remorse” follows the character John Kelly, who often assisted Jack Ryan in his stories as the guy you want to call when something a little darker and more actiony needs to be done. Here in his origin story, Michael B. Jordan takes the role as a Navy SEAL badass who, after a mission to recover a kidnapped CIA operative from Russian agents, loses his family and all the rest of his team to a Russian black ops team. Set on revenge no matter the cost, his determination to get answers when no one else seems to want to help, could lead to World War III. Chris, TC, Ben, and Jennifer take on this Amazon Prime big suspense-action film and decided that as Tom Clancy adaptation fans themselves, this new entry is sure not to disappoint. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. This new film, directed and written by Scott Abramovitch and based on the book “The Locklear Letters” by Michael Kun, is the story of intent and presentation and how none of that matters on the internet. Back in his glory days as a college student, Sid Straw was dating the sorority sister of a famous actor/director/producer sensation. Now as a functional albeit socially awkward adult, Sid sets out to prove once and for all that he did befriend Elizabeth Banks back in the day. On her Facebook fan page, he posts invitations to their college reunion as well as anecdotes and the personal stuff from his own life and everything slowly begins to unravel when he learns you can’t just delete what you’ve already posted on the internet. Sid (Tony Hale) is the lovable protagonist that 2021 needs. His friends and family who help him through these trying times are an ensemble of comedic legends such as Alan Tudyk, Paul Walter Hauser, Elisha Cuthbert, Sara Chalke, and Danielle Brooks. Bradly, Jordan, T.C. and Spidermike lay out their own seven degrees of celebrity encounters while also discussing the return of the heartfelt comedy after such a dreadfully serious awards season.

RUTHERFORD FALLS SERIES REVIEW

It’s a pretty open secret these days that America was founded on land largely stolen from the indigenous population of the United States. And if you’re thinking “Well, that’s not a topic I think would be great for a sitcom” then you’re right in line with the surprise Mike Schur has in store with you. The titular Rutherford Falls is the home of Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms) and was founded by his ancestor who bought it from the Minishonka tribe that lived on the land a few hundred years ago. In the present day, there’s some contentious feelings about a statue of his ancestor, and the emotions of that lead to the history of the town going into chaos. If it weren’t for sad music and scary stories I wouldn’t be as well-adjusted and cheerful as I am today. Moonlighting as a musician off and on since adolescence, I am as big a fan of scores and needle drops as I am of slow zooms, production design, and third act exposition. Just about all of my screen time is spent on international horror, drama, and hour long episodic. Big fan of genre, and the biggest fan of supernatural horror and dark sci-fi with meaningful representation and narratives that use trauma, grief, and grace as more than surface-level content. Also, I read a ton of modern horror novels/comics and stan Matt Berry. In the before times I worked music and film festivals across the US and will hopefully return to that sometime in the future.

 

 

Mark Prince (Screener Squad)

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER SERIES REVIEW

The second of the Disney+ Marvel shows is here and although it wasn’t quite the watercooler discussion show the previous miniseries was, many argue it’s the superior of the two. The six-episode series follows, in the wake of Steve Rogers’ extreme age jump at the end of the last Avengers film, Sam (The Falcon) who can’t bring himself to use Cap’s shield that was entrusted to him and take up the mantle himself. After donating it to what he assumes will be a permanent museum exhibition, he discovers that the government has repurposed it to a new Cap of their own choosing: a blonde white guy named John Walker with some aggression issues. All this doesn’t sit well with Steve’s OTHER former partner, Bucky (The Winter Soldier) but the two end up teamed up anyway to take on a group of terrorists set on breaking down borders around the world, a bunch of super-serum loose in the world making new super-soldiers, and some mysterious new players on the board. Chris, Neil, Dogget, and Spidermike take on this series and frankly, well, they kinda loved the s**t out of it.

RESIDENT ALIEN SERIES REVIEW

In the dead of night, a UFO crashes in a small town in Colorado and that same night, a doctor unexpectedly passes away. The good doctor’s replacement comes in contact with an alien who kills him and assumes his identity. This being from another world has no interest in phoning home; he’s in pursuit of a device which has the power to wipe out all mankind in the blink of an eye, and that is the end goal of his Earth mission. Unfortunately for him, that means he’ll have to spend time learning how to be more convincingly human and he’s not generally crazy about this lesser species who are smarter than pandas but not quite as intelligent as lizards. “Resident Alien”, based on the Dark Horse comic of the same name, stars Alan Tudyk as the visitor from a distant galaxy, and Sara Tomko as Asta Twelvetrees who has some earth-shaking secrets of her own. Bradly, Jordan, Harmoni, and Dogget discuss the brilliance of Alan Tudyk’s performance in this series and how that’s not exactly surprising when looking at everything else he’s done in his career.

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. THE VIRTUOSO MOVIE REVIEW

Anson Mount is “The Virtuoso”, an elite assassin suffering from a guilty conscience after his last job caused the death of an innocent bystander. His shadowy boss, The Mentor (Anthony Hopkins) tells him not to take it personally. Collateral damage comes with the territory. Besides, he needs The Virtuoso (none of the films’ characters are given proper names) to complete a high priority assignment: go to a roadhouse diner in the middle of nowhere and assassinate one of the people inside. The problem is, The Virtuoso hasn’t been told who the target is. Could it be The Waitress (Abbie Cornish) or The Deputy (David Morse)? Maybe it’s The Loner (Eddie Marsan) or Handsome Johnnie (probably not his real name). It’s an unusual predicament for a supposedly professional hitman to find himself in. Before long, bodies begin to drop but not as quickly as our interest level did. Brew yourself a cup of Sleepy Time Tea (although you won’t need it) and listen to our hit squad of reviewers Lewayne, Jordan, Santiago and Marco discuss why this is the “sleeper hit” of the year but not in a good way. MORTAL KOMBAT MOVIE REVIEW

So, what’s the best movie that is an adaptation of a video game? Many would say the corny but fun 1995 “Mortal Kombat” film by Paul W. S. Anderson. Now, that’s not a wildly high bar, and perhaps it’s that the legions of fans from this ever-continuing and evolving fighting game series were set on the belief that because this was a considerably more expensive theatrically released adaptation of the same property, it was set to take the crown. I have bad news for those folks. This sorta-kinda prequel to the games is set in the before-tournament when Earth’s defenders are too few and unprepared and the evil dude from the evil dimension (whatever) is sending his combatants to kill what Earth does have, and whenever you kill someone who has the MK birthmark (and apparently the secret super powers that come with it) you get their mark and your own powers. That’s pretty much the whole movie right here. Goodnight folks! I mean, you can hear some more specific thoughts on the review right here with Chris, Jennifer, Marcos, and Trevor: I guarantee it’s more fun than the movie itself.

In 1983, the fate of the world was shaken when a blast of space radiation caused all psychopaths to turn into metahumans. After these evil Miscreants killed her parents, Emily (Octavia Spencer) vowed to one day create the powers she needed in order to fight against the terror that took her family. Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL REVIEW

Shudder exclusive “The Boys from County Hell” is a horror-comedy with a uniquely Irish twist on the vampire genre. Six Mile Hill is a remote village whose only claim to fame is that Bram Stoker once spent the night there while researching vampires for his classic novel, Dracula. According to legend, a vampire named Abhartach once terrorized Six Mile Hill until the villagers entombed him beneath a cairn. Centuries later, the cairn is little more than a tourist attraction. When the government decides to bulldoze the cairn to make way for a new superhighway it spells doom for the local economy, not to mention the collective blood count of the villagers. Before long, all hell breaks loose, as does some of the narrative logic of the film. Our fearless vampire hunters JaMarco, LeWayne, and Marco discuss whether this original take on vampire lore is worth watching, or if you should just go back to The Stoker, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.

Musician. Screenwriter. IMDB trivia page miraculously brought to life. These are a few ways to adequately describe Jamarco Shaw. Born on the southside of Houston, TX, Jamarco (or Marco, as he’s affectionately named, and NEVER Marco Polo) developed a lifelong love for everything pop culture ever since he was running around in his Blue Ranger Underoos. It wasn’t until a five-year detour in Burbank that he discovered that this love would inspire a passion for years to come. When he’s not raving about cinematography and Spider-Verse, he’s been known to make hip hop instrumentals to pass the time. He aspires to join the ranks of such great Renaissance Men as Donald Glover, John Cassavetes, and Jamie Foxx, but until then, you can catch him trying to make sense of whatever Christopher Nolan just released.
