I was born in Houston, moved to various places in the US, graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, and now residing in Denver. I really live at the cinema though. I probably am the one who singlehandedly killed MoviePass with the number of times I used it. I tend to have different opinions than the general masses on most entertainment properties and it always makes for interesting discussions. Why do companies keep making movies based on fanfics based on other fanfics based on Vampires? I don’t know, but I’ll watch all of them. Do I like DCEU movies way more than MCU? Definitely. Is ‘The Last Jedi’ my absolute favorite Star Wars film? Yep.

In my spare time, when not watching movies, I’m deep into the video game world trying to 100% complete as many games as possible, and sometimes broadcasting it live on Twitch.

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

 

 

Adrian El Critico (Screener Squad)

Though born and raised in Chicago, this film critic is Mexican to the bone. Adrian has been watching movies since he was a child, many of which might not have been age appropriate. Still, he couldn’t get enough. All throughout his life, friends and family would look to him for his recommendations and reviews on whatever films had come their way. Inspired earlier in life by the likes of Ebert and Roper at The Movies and then later Spill.com, Adrian decided film criticism and analysis provided a great outlet to further his love of film. He began to craft his reviews and thoughts on film in ways he thought would be accessible to devout film hounds as well as the casual viewer. Mixing in jokes, entertaining observations and robust critical analysis, Adrian El Critico may be new to OneOfUs, but he is already making a name for himself on our site. LOVE AND MONSTERS MOVIE REVIEW

An irradiated Earth led to all cold-blooded creatures mutating to gigantic sizes and creating an unlivable surface for humans. The few remaining live underground. That list of the living includes Joel (Dylan O’Brien) and Aimee (Jessica Henwick), high school sweethearts. Unfortunately, they are hiding out over 80 miles away from each other, and for an on foot journey, the odds of survival are low. Especially for a guy who freezes up when he gets scared. Nonetheless, the trip is on for Joel who is fortunate enough to meet Michael Rooker along the way (one of the only occasions in film history in which it was fortunate to meet up with Michael Rooker). Chris, Trevor, Lewayne, and Davey take on this post-apocalypse comedy and decide its merits on the Zombieland scale.

Many words have been used to describe Davey Peppers. Words like “Eh” and “Please go outside, just once”. He studied film and advertising at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, because two degrees in fields with terrible job placement is better than one, and currently runs the YouTube channel Game Mechanics. He is easily distracted by shiny things and even the most basic passing mention of a movie being sad. Are you sick of your office job? Do you crave excitement? Are you tired of having to follow the mundane rules of society? Then you should apply to be a henchman and start your supervillain career today! Fresh from BRON studios is a new animated feature starring James Marsden, Rosario Dawson, Thomas Middleditch, and Nathan Fillion. Lester (Middleditch) is an excited new recruit who on his first day is paired with seasoned henchman Hank (Marsden). While Hank tries to mentor the young protege into taking it safe and easy, Lester accidentally gets a hold of a supersuit which grants him uncontrollable abilities. This act skyrockets him into supervillain fame and he eventually seeks help from Hank. Will the two be able to resolve the situation peacefully or does Hank have other plans? Mindy along with her minions: London, Lewayne, and Jordan have banned together to review this film.

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

London Vayavong loves stories. As a child, he read the Goosebumps series and Marvel comics. Yes, he is a Marvel fanboy and totally into Captain America before it was cool (owns three shirts by the way). Unfortunately, comics and Goosebumps were not enough to fulfill his need for stories so he invested the rest of his time watching movies and cartoons starring DC superheroes. Yes, he is also a DC fanboy because he likes to break the rules. It would not be until he reached college that he discovered that there were actually great books that were for adults. Apparently, Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, Gore Vidal, Stephen King, and Neil Gaiman had completely missed his radar. Writing is his full-time career but he also enjoys playing the guitar, acting, doing stand-up comedy, and coding. THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR TV SERIES REVIEW

Director/Writer Mike Flanagan returns to Netflix with a tonal follow-up to his triumphant success on “The Haunting of Hill House” series with this recontextualized series taking on “The Turn of the Screw”. Much like the previous show, this is updated chronologically (to the 80s at least), shares many of the same actors and themes, and loses the ghostly ambiguity (eventually). But how does it compare to the first season? Wright, Robert, Chris, and Brad think maybe it’s not such a good idea to compare them if you want to get the most out of this season’s more serene scares. Robert Garza (Screener Squad)

If it weren’t for sad music and scary stories I wouldn’t be as well-adjusted and cheerful as I am today. Moonlighting as a musician off and on since adolescence, I am as big a fan of scores and needle drops as I am of slow zooms, production design, and third act exposition. Just about all of my screen time is spent on international horror, drama, and hour long episodic. Big fan of genre, and the biggest fan of supernatural horror and dark sci-fi with meaningful representation and narratives that use trauma, grief, and grace as more than surface-level content. Also, I read a ton of modern horror novels/comics and stan Matt Berry. In the before times I worked music and film festivals across the US and will hopefully return to that sometime in the future.

THE BOYS – SEASON 2 TV SERIES REVIEW

This Amazon Prime adaptation of the Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson comic series continues to outshine its source material in the second season. SHITHOUSE MOVIE REVIEW

“Shithouse” is the debut feature from writer-director-actor Cooper Raiff. College freshman Alex (Raiff) is homesick, pathologically shy, and hasn’t made a single friend all year. After an awkward experience at the Shithouse — THE party house on campus — Alex has a meet cute with his dorm RA Maggie (Dylan Gelula). They spend the evening together and talk about their lives, their families, their hopes and dreams. This kind of social interaction is a major breakthrough for the inexperienced Alex so he’s understandably confused when the emotionally unavailable Maggie ignores him the next day. Desperate to rekindle their connection, Alex goes to the next Shithouse party in the hopes of winning Maggie back. This mumblecore rom-com has been earning lots of critical praise and won the 2020 SXSW Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature. Our crew of critical co-eds Julien, Adrian, and Luna (AKA Jena) ditched school to watch this movie and they brought enough opinions to share with the class. STAR TREK – LOWER DECKS TV SERIES REVIEW

Space….the infinitely final frontier (apparently). These are the voyages of the Starship Cerritos. Their (?) year mission. To explore new worlds (after someone else has already been there). To seek out new life and new civilizations (and to look for a good bar while there), to boldly go where several shows have gone before…only in a new way. This new show is animated, it’s a comedy, AND it’s CANON. How’s that gonna work? Sure, there’s a few growing pains, but overall, Chris, Marco, Dogget, and Eliot were all in. Check out their review.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, in 1992 Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas, where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this paradise you see before you. Many words have been used to describe Davey Peppers. Words like “Eh” and “Please go outside, just once”. He studied film and advertising at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, because two degrees in fields with terrible job placement is better than one, and currently runs the YouTube channel Game Mechanics. He is easily distracted by shiny things and even the most basic passing mention of a movie being sad. He can be found on Twitter as well as staring at a blank wall wondering what the point is, and if his spending so much time staring at walls is the reason he’s not funny.

 

 

Adrian El Critico (Screener Squad)

Though born and raised in Chicago, this film critic is Mexican to the bone. Adrian has been watching movies since he was a child, many of which might not have been age appropriate. Still, he couldn’t get enough. All throughout his life, friends and family would look to him for his recommendations and reviews on whatever films had come their way. Inspired earlier in life by the likes of Ebert and Roper at The Movies and then later Spill.com, Adrian decided film criticism and analysis provided a great outlet to further his love of film. He began to craft his reviews and thoughts on film in ways he thought would be accessible to devout film hounds as well as the casual viewer. Mixing in jokes, entertaining observations and robust critical analysis, Adrian El Critico may be new to OneOfUs, but he is already making a name for himself on our site.
