LOVECRAFT COUNTRY TV SERIES REVIEW

Based upon the book by Matt Ruff, HBO presents its latest genre-bending series, “Lovecraft Country”. Adapted by writer and showrunner Misha Green with executive producers Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, we follow Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he returns home from the Korean war to help his uncle (Courtney B. Vance) and an old childhood friend (Jurnee Smollett) to find his missing father (Michael K. Williams). Their long road trip takes our protagonists across the 1950s Jim Crow America where the terrifying horrors aren’t just its racist society, but also unspeakable monsters that could only come from a Lovecraftian novel. Here to join on this rollercoaster journey are our critics Nathan, Jena, Jordan, and Eliot. Does this horror show leave enough scary thrills or is it as effective as a toddler who got the zombie facepaint from the state fair?

THE PLACE OF NO WORDS MOVIE REVIEW

Once upon a time, a little boy named Bodhi traveled into the woods with his viking warrior father. Together they faced great adventures with fairies, Bigfoots with colds, fighting evil aliens with lasers, and witches with curses. All of these dangers are nothing compared to trying to understand the greatest monster of all: his father’s terminal disease. Director Mark Webber and his wife Teresa Palmer play the father and mother and Bodhi, their real son, plays their son, in this magical realism fantasy art-adventure. Does it work? I was born in Houston, moved to various places in the US, graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, and now residing in Denver. I really live at the cinema though. I probably am the one who singlehandedly killed MoviePass with the number of times I used it. I tend to have different opinions than the general masses on most entertainment properties and it always makes for interesting discussions. Why do companies keep making movies based on fanfics based on other fanfics based on Vampires? I don’t know, but I’ll watch all of them. Do I like DCEU movies way more than MCU? Definitely. Is ‘The Last Jedi’ my absolute favorite Star Wars film? Yep.

In my spare time, when not watching movies, I’m deep into the video game world trying to 100% complete as many games as possible, and sometimes broadcasting it live on Twitch.

London Vayavong loves stories. As a child, he read the Goosebumps series and Marvel comics. Yes, he is a Marvel fanboy and totally into Captain America before it was cool (owns three shirts by the way). Unfortunately, comics and Goosebumps were not enough to fulfill his need for stories so he invested the rest of his time watching movies and cartoons starring DC superheroes. Yes, he is also a DC fanboy because he likes to break the rules. It would not be until he reached college that he discovered that there were actually great books that were for adults. Apparently, Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, Gore Vidal, Stephen King, and Neil Gaiman had completely missed his radar. Writing is his full-time career but he also enjoys playing the guitar, acting, doing stand-up comedy, and coding. He currently writes for The Script Lab along with working on screenplays and a novel.

MURDER BURY WIN MOVIE REVIEW

This micro-indie horror comedy just had a showing at the Austin Film Festival and we were lucky enough to get to catch it. The story follows three friends who, over a period of time, have been developing a board game (Murder Bury Win, natch), and are at the stage of trying to fundraise for it online. Unfortunately for them, no one cares. But wait! A mysterious phone call leads them out to a house well out in the middle of nowhere where their mysterious new benefactor reveals himself as a legendary game designer who is ready to invest in the game…well, just outright buy the game, the credits for having designed it, etc and for a pittance. Things do not go well from there and soon the friends find themselves in a real-life version of their own game. Chris, Lewayne, Ryan, and Robert take this one on and they play their own murder game.

SYNCHRONIC MOVIE REVIEW

Brilliant indie director’s Benson/Moorhead (“Resolution”, “Spring”, “The Endless”) dip their toes into sci-fi with “Synchronic”. The title refers to a drug that causes the user to slip through time which has led to a series of accidents that leave a mess for New Orleans paramedics Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) to clean up. We won’t tell you more than that because sometimes you gotta experience the reveals entirely on your own. Listen to Nathan, Frank, Robert, and Alex get truly addicted to and share their thoughts about this smart and character-driven sci-fi film.

Just about all of my screen time is spent on international horror, drama, and hour long episodic. Big fan of genre, and the biggest fan of supernatural horror and dark sci-fi with meaningful representation and narratives that use trauma, grief, and grace as more than surface-level content. Also, I read a ton of modern horror novels/comics and stan Matt Berry. BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM MOVIE REVIEW

We’re just gonna call it, “Borat 2”. If you want to go with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bride to America Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”, you do you. This sequel which we never thought was even possible to do follows Sacha Baron Cohen as his most famous character, the fish-out-of-water Borat. This time, he comes to America with a mission. Ok, that didn’t work. This time he comes to America with a back-up mission. To deliver his teen daughter Tutar to Mike Pence as a bride in order to restore once glorious nation of…ok, you get it. A series of new tricks lets Cohen get away with yet more of his outrageous stunts letting the ‘deplorables’ of the country show themselves for who they really are. And here’s the shocker: this may be even better than the original. Many thoughts and bad Borat impressions are to be had from your critics, Chris, Matt, Trevor, and Adrian, so you owe it to yourself to watch their review.

FUGITIVE DREAMS MOVIE REVIEW

The love child of Tim Burton, Robert Eggers and Rod Serling seems to exist in the form of Austin Texas’ own Jason Neulander (“The Intergalactic Nemesis”, “Salt”), the writer/director of one of the most uncategorizable “on the road” movies ever made. RADIUM GIRLS MOVIE REVIEW

Come one, come all! Learn about the newest miracle drug: radium!! This glow-in-the-dark French phenomenon is sure to cure all that ails ya! What’s that? Your bones are riddled with tumors? Posh. That’s probably just syphilis, you hussy. Thus the scene is set for “Radium Girls”, a biopic based on the real life 1928 trial against The United States Radium Corporation. At the time, the New Jersey USRC was one of several companies that used radium-based paint to produce glow-in-the-dark watch faces. As their female factory workers increasingly endured the effects of radiation poisoning, this landmark case became a race to see if the company could actually be held accountable before those women died. Mindy, Dogget, and Tessa give “glowing” opinions of this Lily Tomlin produced film, but, when it comes to radium, that’s not necessarily a good thing. Check out their review here.

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. A BABYSITTER’S GUIDE TO MONSTER HUNTING MOVIE REVIEW

Babysitting can be stress inducing. But what if the kid attracts literal nightmares? Kelly (Tamara Smart) must team up with a secret order to stop a boogeyman (Tom Felton) from wreaking havoc in Netflix’s new dark fantasy romp for kids, based on the book trilogy. Fortunately, it turns out there’s a secret society of babysitters who regularly deal with the monster-terrorizing boogeymen of the world. Which means there’s also a lot of monsters out there. Ben, Elliot, Harmoni and Dogget sharpen their stakes, load their silver bullets, and head out into the night to deliver their review.

As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO SEVEN

Our crew shamelessly cozies up to writer/director Aaron Sorkin (stuff it, Brad) for his latest film which takes on the protestors who were railroaded into a trial for conspiracy to start a riot during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Now, I know that on paper, that doesn’t sound like anything but a conventional political trial movie. But no. This was one wacky courtroom. Various ideologies from the left butt heads with each other and against a judge who was out to get them all from the beginning, Sorkin takes these characters and…well, normally I’d say he made them bigger than life but honestly, to all reports he actually toned them down a bit from the actual antics that went on with them in the trial. Chris, Marco, Nathan, and Mark take on this case and are definitely not going to plead the fifth.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, in 1992 Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas, where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management.
