WEDNESDAY SERIES REVIEW

They’re creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky, and all together on Netflix. Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, follows the title character as she attempts to solve an ancient mystery from the time of buckled hats and witch burnings. The secrets are all hidden within the walls of her new school that was previously attended by her parents Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia Addams. She’ll have plenty of help from her  fellow classmates which include werewolves, vampires, gorgons, and a bee keeper named Eugene (Moosa Mostafa). Wednesday will also have to navigate the treacherous choppy waters of the most dangerous kind of triangle. We aren’t talking Bermuda. Tyler (Hunter Doohan) the son of the town sheriff fancies himself some goth chicks and has the hots for Wednesday. Also the troubled tall, dark, and handsome artist Xavier (Percy Hynes White) has his eye on our heroine and may be the key to unlocking her newly budding psychic abilities. Meanwhile the queen bee of the school Bianca (Joy Sunday) is tired of this gothic psycho getting all the attention from the hot dudes in the school. Did I mention that this wasp happens to be a siren? Much like the popular CW series Riverdale, these teens and their brooding drama is smack dab in the middle of a murder mystery that their towering, tyrannical Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie) has deemed a Hyde Hoax. Bradly, Harmoni, Dogget, and Frank discuss their favourite Addams through the decades, contemplate what works and what doesn’t about this murder mystery at a Fantasy School setting, and use the powers of precognitive dissonance to predict if Netflix gives season to a green light or an axe.

Every now and then, and not often mind you, someone makes a new Christmas movie that isn’t just a checklist of tropes and cliches. Once in a great while, someone actually creates a unique and worthwhile Christmas movie that dares to be worthy of an annual rewatch alongside the Muppets, Elf, and Die Hard. Rare though it may be, a new Christmas standard CAN be made. And we’re not talking about a groaning submission to your cousin’s insane love of the dead-eyed Polar Express or the TNT forced obligation of A Christmas Story playing in the background for 24 hours. No, we’re talking about what very well might be a new entry into the rewarding modern Christmas movies, like Klaus or Carol. Bradly, Ryan, and T.C. are pleased as peppermint to discuss Spirited, the new Will Ferrell/Ryan Reynolds take on the oft trodden classic Charles Dickens’s 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. For nearly two centuries, Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-To-Come, have led a team of afterlife spirits in helping find and redeem one new human soul or “perp” every Christmas. Christmas Present (Ferrell) has been eligible for “retirement” for decades but refuses to do so, despite being tempted by the promise of settling down and making up for his own failures in his past life. Scoping for a new soul to redeem, the spirits encounter Clint Briggs (Reynolds), a renowned controversial media consultant. Despite Marley’s insistence that Briggs is an “unredeemable” soul, Present is set on him as he believes that his redemption could have a “ripple” effect, making him a force for positive change in humanity. The Ghosts begin a year of research on Clint, preparing for the annual haunt. And if all of that spin on the classic isn’t enough to hoo you, this is a full-blown musical. Gather around the fire and enjoy some hot cocoa with the Squad as they unwrap this new Christmas classic.

VIOLENT NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW

What’s a holiday season without a little violent Christmas mayhem? In a bit of inspired casting, David Harbour takes on the role of (actual) Santa Claus in this brutal action comedy from the director of the Dead Snow films. It’s Christmas Eve and Santa is drunk, tired, and kinda about to be over it. Kids are selfish, the world is full of greed and there’s more people on his naughty list than ever before. But when he’s dropping off presents at the home of a rich family, he finds himself caught up in trying to save a little girl who still believes. Murderous criminals with Xmas call-signs, led by the growly Scrooge (John Leguizamo) have invaded the home and are determined to break into a safe that hides a lot of cash. It’s up to Santa to remember what it was like pre-Christmas Magic to deliver some lumps to the decidedly naughty. Chris, Alan, Tessa, and Marco sing the carols to this nasty little new Xmas classic.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). And they all lived happily ever after. Cue the music and roll the credits right? Oh ho ho I don’t think so!  What happens after your true love’s kiss and the wedding cake is cut? For Giselle and Robert it’s a big move to a luxurious private estate, an addition to their family in the form of a bouncing baby girl, and navigating the magic moody swinging teenagers going through a phase. 2007’s Enchanted long awaited sequel Disenchanted is finally here, directed by Adam Shankman and streaming on Disney Plus. It continues the fish out of water love story of a New Yorker named Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and a once upon a time royal princess named Giselle (Amy Adams). Only now, they’re dealing with obstacles more akin to the real world than from a land of make believe, such as morning train commutes and impressing the private school PTA. Where’s a rampaging dragon when you need one? Giselle and step daughter Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino) have a brief confrontation about family by blood as opposed to step kids. Giselle in her heart feels she can never be anything more then Morgan’s step mother so decides to make a wish on a magic wishing wand that results in enchanted hijinks. Only the power of love before the clock strikes midnight can return the magic to where it belongs and restore the bonds of love we call family. This is a Disney sequel so it also features a cast of returning and brand new characters. Maya Rudolph is an evil boss mom with a latte. Alan Tudyk is a magical anthropomorphized singing scroll. The returning James Marsden is the new King of Andalasia with Idina Menzel as the Queen who has a show-stopping vocal performance. Bradly, Frank, Harmoni, and Ben use the power of memory to discuss their relationship with the first movie and take up arms against the beast of sequelitus that haunts the lowly hills of every Disney sequel. Can the power of critique bring praise to tasteful art or will this film bring about a dark curse upon this franchise?

THE PEOPLE WE HATE AT THE WEDDING MOVIE REVIEW

Jordan, Frank, Melina, and T.C. have been seated at the table reserved for those invited to a wedding who very clearly do not want to be there. They will spend the entire time talking shit about the people in attendance who they find annoying, dumb, and/or detestable, much like this new film starring Kristen Bell playing a version of Eleanor from The Good Place and her brother, Ben Platt with a beard (so as not to confuse him for a 30-something looking high school kid – obligatory Dear Evan Hansen dig), and Allison Janney as their mother who just wants her kids to just get it together long enough to attend their half sister’s wedding in London. Bell hooks up with Ted from Schitt’s Creek, Platt juggles his boyfriend and a potential threesome, and Janney rekindles her romance with her ex-husband. Meanwhile, the bride deals with her siblings’ bad attitudes and there are drunk bridesmaids, arrests, & Taco Bell. Plenty of drama unfolds through various intertwining plots in various degrees of comedy and seriousness. And if this sounds somewhat familiar, it’s because it’s yet another attempt to recapture the wonderfully crafted Love, Actually formula, but much like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, New Year’s Eve, He’s Just Not That Into You, and What to Expect When You’re Expecting, this movie fails to achieve what Love, Actually did. This should be a moving story about familial love in all its facets. It’s decidedly not that. And after the Squad shares their thoughts, there’s a good chance none of them will be invited to anymore weddings.

SLUMBERLAND MOVIE REVIEW

Little Nemo in Slumberland is the groundbreaking comic strip from innovative cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay. Ever since it first appeared in 1905, the strip has been adapted multiple times for stage and screen, with varying results. Slumberland has the budget and digital tools to bring McCay’s eye-popping world to life in a way previous adaptations could not, but director Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend) opts for telling a more conventional kids film narrative, with just a sprinkling of references to the original source material. Nemo (newcomer Marlow Barkley) lives in a picturesque lighthouse with her father Peter (Kyle Chandler), a kindly lighthouse keeper. When Peter dies in a boating accident, Nemo must leave the only world she’s ever known to live with Peter’s estranged brother, Phillip (Chris O’Dowd). Her uncle is kind, but boring, and utterly clueless about raising children, especially one as independent and imaginative as Nemo. In a dream, Nemo encounters Flip (Jason Mamoa) a half-man, half-animal outlaw character from the bedtime stories her father used to tell her. Flip is searching for a forbidden realm where your dreams come true and he reluctantly agrees to partner up with Nemo. Armed with a map of Slumberland, Nemo and Flip jump through other people’s dreams in search of the hidden doors that will take them to the deepest levels of Slumberland. Meanwhile, Agent Green (Weruche Opia) of the Bureau of Subconscious Activities is hot on their trail. THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY HOLIDAY SPECIAL REVIEW

Just in time for the holidays, Marvel/DC golden boy James Gunn has gifted us The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special now streaming on Disney+. It’s a loving nod to the corny TV specials of old; including the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, which will definitely NOT be streaming on Disney+ any time soon. The holidays are rough for Star Lord Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) – being kidnapped from Earth by non-Christmas celebrating space pirates will do that to you – so the Guardians decide to cheer Peter up by bringing Christmas to him. All  Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) have to do is go to Earth, pick up some decorations, and find the ultimate Christmas present: Earth’s mightiest hero, Kevin Bacon. What could possibly go wrong? Gunn stuffs this stocking with animated sequences, musical numbers, celebrity cameos, goofy gags, and a sentimental story about the magic of Christmas. STAR WARS: ANDOR SERIES REVIEW

Unless you’ve been living under a pop culture rock for 45 years, you are aware of a little series of films and shows called Star Wars. It’s kind of a big deal. After 12 films and 9 TV series, and more books, comics, and video games than any normal person will ever have time to indulge in, there is something for everyone, though that won’t stop some from thinking every bit of the ongoing space fantasy should be exclusively designed to their specific tastes. And with Disney continuing to expand the franchise further and further, the stories in the galaxy far, far away have branched off in many different directions, which brings us to Andor, the newest episodic series created by Tony Gilroy for streaming on Disney+. It is the fourth live-action series in the Star Wars franchise, as well as a prequel to both the spin-off film Rogue One (2016) and the original Star Wars film (1977). The series follows thief-turned-Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the five years that lead to the events of the two films. Diego Luna reprises his role as Cassian and also serves as an executive producer. But when a franchise has done so much already, is there really anything new to be said and done? Well, it turns out there is, as Marco, Melina, and T.C. are more than happy to discuss. This character driven, action packed, political thriller, drama fills in gaps in the story of the creation of the Rebellion seen in the original trilogy with an ensemble of characters from every facet of the war. It was a time before vampires adhered to a honour code and sparkled like a blood diamond that your wealthy uncle insisted was dug by a local whom was grateful for the job opportunity. It was a time when creatures of the night sang a song of sixpence and feasted upon the blood of virgins in ripped bodices. A time of a lot of horny, thirsty literature with profound drama intertwined with erotic fantasies. It was a time called “The 70s”.  Based on Anne Rice’s Iconic and groundbreaking novel Interview With The Vampire, this new adaptation has been created for AMC Plus. The story follows a very successful and ambitious man named Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) who meets a vampire named Lestat (Sam Reid) in New Orleans in the year 1910. The two form a bond a friendship which quickly becomes sexual in nature but which violently transcends into God and creator as Louis is changed into a vampire by Lestat. For over a century Louis struggles to leave his old life behind and embrace that of being a monstrous killer. He shares his story in an interview with the renowned retired journalist Mallow (Eric Bogosian) where he reminisces about old friends, family, and flames, which are played by an electrifying ensemble that includes Assad Zaman, Bailey Bass, John DiMaggio, and Rae Dawn Chong. Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. THE FABELMANS MOVIE REVIEW

It seems de rigueur for older directors to eventually come out with a tale about the bucolic days of their youth and their experiences that led to them being interested in film. Steven Spielberg making one (semi-autobiographical sure, but come on) is going to stir up interest. The Fabelmans focuses on a young “Sam Fabelman” (Gabriel LaBelle) who lives with his mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams), father Burt (Paul Dano) and three sisters. From an early age, learning the language of film becomes an obsession with Sam and he is encouraged by his family and boy scout friends who often help with his short movies. But all is not as rosy as it seems on the surface of this family. It’s through the process of learning about film that Sam begins to uncover a secret inside his family, and the processing of it would take (switching back to the actual Spielberg here) several decades and films to work it out. Ultimately, Spielberg has made a charming and not overly-dramatic bildungsroman here that decidedly is going to appeal to the fans of his career here the most, while dodging the bulk of meta-narrative you might expect. Chris, Wright, Marco, and Alan take on the challenge of decoding this narrative and largely come away pleased with it all. Even if they just want to make David Lynch cameo appearance jokes for longer than they should.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
