STAR WARS: TALES OF THE JEDI SERIES REVIEW

It is often said that no one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans. For some, the continued expansion of the franchise will simply never be good enough, because it isn’t what they’ve so deeply ingrained into their consciousness as “correct”. Anything after Return of the Jedi that isn’t the EU they approve of is obviously the worst thing ever created, and the people responsible should be skewered by multiple lightsabers. But then there are those who understand that Star Wars is like pizza. Even when it’s not what you were hoping for, it’s still pizza, and who doesn’t love pizza! While the Fandom Menace screams “Not my Star Wars!” or “This is woke feminist propoganda!” or “I wanted pepperoni and onions!”,  the rest of us find new and amazing additions to the galaxy far, far away, and much of that expanded content has been courtesy of Mr. Dave Filoni, the godfather of modern Star Wars. Tales of the Jedi is a new anthology series that explores different Jedi characters from the prequel trilogy era. There are six episodes split into two “paths”: the first following fan favorite (even the jerks who hate all things new in the franchise can surely agree to this, right?) Ahsoka Tano across various points in her life, and the other depicts a young Count Dooku before his fall to the dark side of the Force. Each episode connects to a piece of the missing puzzle from the prequels and even overlaps with key events in those films, thus continuing to improve those films and their contexts. The series is done in the familiar animated style of the Filoni-verse that began with The Clone Wars in 2008. Sarah Jane, Melina, Bradly, and T.C. enter the Jedi Counsel chambers to discuss this excellent miniseries.

We here at one of us can not stress how important therapy is and are happy to participate in the takedown of the taboo surrounding mental health and psychiatric help. That being said, if you need a therapist please don’t abduct a doctor and chain them up in your basement. Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg present The Patient on Hulu or Disney+ if you reside up north. Doctor Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) wakes up one day to find himself chained to a bed with Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson) who is obviously in desperate need of psychiatric care. Sam tells Dr. Strauss that he needs to be fixed….or else.  Dr. Strauss in his prison reflects on this life, and contemplates what he can do to ensure his future.  Bradly, Jena, and Neil psychoanalyze the Hitchcockian method of the slow burn thriller, discuss the top tier acting from the two leads, and exclaim their mutual love for David Alan Grier.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL MOVIE REVIEW

You’ve heard of Hogwarts and U.A. the school for superheroes but have you ever heard of a school for myths, legends and fairy tales? Well, yeah, there’s Regal Academy and Ever After High to name a few. Apparently it’s a whole sub-genre of young adult entertainment. Anyways, The School for Good and Evil is Netflix’s magical attempt to get a piece of that genre starring two young charismatic leads, Sophia Anne Caruso as Sophie and Sofia Wylie as Agatha. Sophie has her head in the clouds and her heart set on living in a beautiful castle with a magnificent bae under the a crown of peace and prosperity and Agatha is her best friend who is shunned and mocked by the other townspeople for being a witch. They are spirited away into the school that separates good and evil in order to maintain a perfect balance in the world.  Bradly, Harmoni, and Dogget hold a parent teacher conference and assess the success of this particular genre amongst the youth, grade the A-list cameo’s such as Kerri Washington, Rachel Bloom, Laurence Fishburne, and Charlize Theron, then conclude with an analytical discussion on racism.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT MOVIE REVIEW

Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the greatest war novels ever written. It’s the story of teenager Paul Baümer who gladly enlists in the German army, and goes to war full of patriotic fervor, and youthful ideals. Those naïve feelings are crushed out of existence as Paul discovers the reality of a soldier’s life, and the senseless horrors of war. Inspired by Remarque’s own experiences as a soldier in WWI, All Quiet on the Western Front was a global best seller upon its publication in 1929. However, a few years later, Remarque’s works would be banned by the Nazis, and he was forced to flee Germany. The book has been adapted for stage and screen before, but notably this is the first time German filmmakers have attempted to adapt it. No expense was spared in recreating the carnage of the First World War, and the film has been selected as Germany’s entry in this year’s Oscars, but does the new adaptation honor Remarque’s story? Our reviewers T.C., Beau, and Marco are fans of the source novel, and are familiar with past adaptations. Needless to say, they have strong opinions about this latest version. QUEER FOR FEAR SERIES REVIEW

There’s no divergence of opinions here between Rose, Jordan, Tessa, and Chad. Queer For Fear is a must see for any horror fan. Whatever you identify as, knowing that a lot of our modern horror shares roots with queer history is important. A lot of writers/directors/artists, all queer in their own way, have contributed to the genre in ways you might not fully understand. The documentary series does a wonderful job studying film through a queer lens, that’s it’s almost impossible to see it any other way. Queer For Fear is a must for horror junkies and film nerds who like to study film theory/history. Do yourself a favor, watch the doc, and try not to dance too hard when the opening credits drop.

BEAVIS & BUTTHEAD SEASON 9 REVIEW

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” That’s a stupid way to live life. Sure, things can be timeless, but if you don’t slap a new coat of paint on it once in a while… maybe tighten some screws… eventually “it” will be broke. So why not give it some TLC now? After all, Beavis and Butt-Head have been in the zeitgeist for 30 years now. They’re so old that the new show has two timelines. One where they’re teenagers, the other they’re middle-aged, both in our present time. It’s great. Matt, Ryan, and Chad cannot wait for the Avengers-style universe they build with Beavis and Butt-Head. For real though, this 30 year old show is somehow still relevant. Making the comedy still topical, and the riffing of music/youtube/tiktok videos makes this a definite watch. For old fans and hopefully some new ones… You butt-hole.

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS SEASON 3 REVIEW

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 boldly goes (again) into the realm of comedy, with enough gags, easter eggs, cameos, and deep cut references to fill the hold of a California-class starship. Season 2 ended on an uncharacteristically bleak cliffhanger, with Captain Freeman under arrest for having destroyed the Pakled homeworld. Season 3 picks up right where we left off, with ensign Mariner determined to clear her mother’s name. Of course, she’s got the help of her fellow Cerritos lower deckers, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, and a holographic Zefram Cochrane, and a stolen amusement park ride, and… wait, what? Oh yeah, this is Lower Decks, so things can and will get ridiculous. This season offers up an overarching narrative, mixed in with fun stand alone episodes, character development, wacky hijinks, and plenty of loving, self-aware snark. Along the way, we encounter legacy characters, and locations, the redemption of disgraced exocomp and former ensign Peanut Hamper, and the introduction of the Texas-class drone starships which threaten to make the Cerritos and all California-class ships obsolete. Oh, and did I mention the long awaited return to everybody’s favorite “tacky Cardassian fascist eyesore”? That’s right, we (finally) go back to Deep Space Nine! Our very own Oneofus lower deckers Eliot, Jordan, Harmony, and Marco stepped away from the dabo tables long enough to record this review. Was Lower Decks Season 3 their cup of Earl Grey, hot? Or should it be ejected along with the warp core? Listen and find out!

CALL JANE MOVIE REVIEW

It’s a goddamn travesty that a movie about women risking their lives seeking out safe abortions in a time when they were illegal would still be poignant and reflective of our modern times, but here we are. Call Jane stars Elizabeth Banks as Joy, a married woman who is in the midst of a pregnancy that will end her life if brought to term. When she isn’t allowed to get a legal abortion, and after considering all other options, she finds a group of suburban women known as the Jane Collective, led by Virgina (Sigourney Weaver), and her life is forever changed. Jane was an underground women’s health service in Chicago, from 1969 to 1973. The collective sought to address the increasing number of unsafe abortions being performed by untrained providers. Since illegal abortions were not only dangerous but very expensive, the founding members of the collective believed that they could provide women with safer and more affordable access to the procedure. But how does this film handle the history of the Janes? Do the performances and narrative do justice to some of the most influential women and allies in the war for the right of a woman to make autonomous decisions about her own body and reproductive functions? Melina, T.C. and Bradly discuss this biopic with the understanding that there is a much, much larger conversation to be had about not just the moment in American history this movie portrays but our current world.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

THE MIDNIGHT CLUB SERIES REVIEW

Just in time for the Halloween Season, Netflix proudly presents…21 Jump Scares! Ok, no it’s actually called The Midnight Club BUT this show does now officially hold the Guinness World Record for Most Jump Scares Used in a Single Episode of Television. But don’t be so quick to recoil my fellow horror fans: this is not a ten-hour parade of tired haunted house tropes. This is, in fact, the newest series helmed by the great Mike Flanagan, who has already brought forth such masterworks as Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House, Gerald’s Game and Midnight Mass. The Midnight Club follows the character of Ilonka (Iman Benson), a teenage girl who, upon the eve of her High School graduation, is diagnosed with cancer. After an unsuccessful slew of treatments, Ilonka decides to instead enter a youth hospice with a storied and mysterious past. It’s not long after her arrival that her fellow residents initiate her into the Midnight Club, a nightly get-together where everyone sneaks out of their rooms into the basement to drink wine and tell each other scary stories. As Ilonka and her new friends begin to bond, it becomes clear that the hospice may not be what it seems, and dark forces may be awakening within its halls…cue the Castle Thunder. Mike Flanagan is a master of creating horror with a tremendous amount of heart. One minute you’re huddled under the blanket, the next you’re reaching for the tissues while contemplating the true meaning of existence. Does The Midnight Club pack the emotional weight of Flanagan’s past series? That’s what card-carrying Flanagan fans Rose, Tessa and Melina have come together to determine.

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense.
