This arrow prayer emerges from Psalm 51, a penitential psalm inspired by a dark and disturbing story from the height of David’s rule as Israel’s king. Psalm 51 provides an incredible glimpse into David’s soul, and serves as a model prayer of forgiveness. It reminds us that forgiveness requires a humble awareness of sin, and a turning to God that is always met by God’s unfailing love and great compassion.

We continue our series in arrow prayers by examining Thomas’s climactic prayer in John 20:24-31. We will look at the encounter with Jesus that led to this prayer, what is being expressed in this prayer, and what we can learn from Thomas’s prayer about how to live and to pray during this time.

Today we begin a series on arrow prayers in the Bible by studying the shortest prayer in the Bible. We will examine each of the words in this prayer to see what they show us about what arrow prayers are. We’ll then apply what we’ve learned by going through examples of arrow prayer, and looking at what this prayer in particular teaches us about how to pray.
