TV Guide 11/03/04

A cave-in traps Jack, whose life hinges on a rescue mission led by Charlie, shaky from drug withdrawal and haunted by memories of his similarly addicted brother (Neil Hopkins). Another plot concerns a radio SOS by Sayid that's strangely thwarted. Shannon, Paul and Allen are hitting their stride with this show with a consistent stream of new mysteries every week and meet enough Bloody Rock Gods to fill an island.

Relocation sparks dissension among the ranks. One group, spearheaded by Jack, seeks a water-plentiful, inland retreat; another group, led by Kate, opts for rescue on the beach. Also, a culture clash turns violent for Michael and Jin; a separate peace bonds Charlie and Locke. The guys welcome their first guest Eric Z, and try to impress him with the amount of podcast segments they have.

Leadership fears plague Jack, who's also tested by recollections of a troubled youth and exacting parents (Veronica Hamel, John Terry) that he flashes back to during a surrealistic jungle trek. Paul starts keeping a list of unsolved mysteries that he dubs "Paul's Predicaments."

A hunt for boar to feed the starving survivors also brings a revelation about the loner named Locke (Terry O'Quinn), who confronts a terrifying behemoth roaming the jungle. Elsewhere, the fuselage is turned into a funeral pyre that falls prey to scavengers. Paul gets fired up about Lost after watching what Allen and Shannon consider one of their favorite episodes.

Flashbacks recall Kate's troubled past as a fugitive, a secret uncovered by Jack while caring for a critically injured U.S. marshal who had Kate in custody. Paul has just about had enough of the show Lost, Shannon and Allen try to keep him hanging on.

Suspense mounts in the pilot's conclusion, which charts an adventurous foray into the isle's heights; and the lifesaving efforts of a beleaguered MD (Matthew Fox). Paul introduces us to his Process and his Perspective and gains the ability to play clips from Lost.
