The only gardener in the Fellowship, and with no great aspirations beyond marrying Rosie Cotton, there’s no denying that our boy Samwise is a sweetheart. But is he our first Hobbit Himbo?

To help us answer this meaty (or perhaps potato-y) question, we’ve enlisted the help of much-loved Australian writer and self-professed Samwise fan Alison Evans (they/them). It’ll still take us three episodes and a total runtime on par with the cinematic cut of the trilogy, but determining young Mr Gamgee’s Purity of Heart is important academic work, goddammit.

(Side-note: if you’ve listened to our most recent episode on Everything Everywhere All At Once, you’ll know that we loved having Wai-Mun on so much that we invited them to become a permanent host mid-episode. And, even better, they agreed! Following the delicious chaos of our Everything Everywhere All At Once episode, which had a frankly incredible runtime, please enjoy the Quick-Fire Round that Aandhi dropped on us roughly four hours into our delirious recording – classic dishes found at Chinese/Malaysian restaurants in small Australian towns. From the nightmarish vision of ham and chicken rolls to san choy bow, Aandhi presses Wai-Mun and Ginger (two people who only talk in paragraphs) to quickly and decisively decide whether or not each dish a himbo. And if you’ve heard Himbology before, you don’t need to look at the runtime of this episode to understand that the title ‘quick-fire round’ is bordering on false advertising.

Each Quick-Fire Round sees Aandhi surprising Ginger and Wai-Mun with a themed list of potential himbos, all of which must be quickly and succinctly put in the Himbo basket or tossed aside. With such verbose co-hosts, the name of the segment is ultimately a lie, but we have fun.

Stick on your googly eyes and toast your bagels – it’s time to verse-jump into the impossibly great film Everything Everywhere All At Once, and ask the essential question: is Waymond Wang a Himbo? Ke Huy Quan’s performance was rich and multi-faceted enough to remind the world how great he is, but how Pure of Heart is Waymond really?

Holy Diver, Batman! Apologies to the Dio-phobics out there – it’s time to dive into JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in search of a Himbo. Not to be confused with Joseph Joestar, Jodio Joestar, Johnny Joestar or Jolyne Cujoh, today we look at the eldest son of George Joestar, that broad boy with the Tank build, Jonathan Joestar, and wonder: is he a Himbo? We’ll figure it out eventually, once we sort through all the nonsensical classic rock references and dialed-up-to-13 narration.

Ok, hear me out – before you start yelling YES OBVIOUSLY at your device, which you would be right to do, remember that there are some complexities to our 66 Long/31 Waist broad-shouldered lad. Technically we’re referring to Channing’s character in the aggressively fine 2022 film The Lost City, but sincerely, I can only think of him as Channing Tatum. I say with love, Channing isn’t exactly a Meryl Streep, disappearing into roles.

Much like influential Himbo portrayer Keanu Reeves, Channing has some pretty solid chops as a Human Golden Retriever, but does The Lost City’s formulaic nature work for him or against him?

Featuring potential himbos left and right, Airplane is the first time we’ve considered the possibility of an entire film being a Himbo. Does the movie hold up? Oh GOD no. But we still managed to talk about it for an hour and a half.

All razor-sharp cheekbones and dull-eyed stares, Ben Stiller’s Derek Zoolander from the 2001 film of the same name is an unconventional Himbo candidate for the metrosexual era. Stiller was probably more jacked than you remember (especially by the pre-MCU standards of the time), but is Derek a Himbo or a Himbecile?

Oh, and just for the record: blackface is not behaviour becoming a Himbo, and we at Himbology Enterprises collectively cringe at that bit of the film.

Keanu Reeves is a figure well known to Himbologists the world over for his many wide-eyed, “whoa”-centric roles​, and this certainly won’t be the last time one of his characters is up for discussion. Ted Theodore Logan (from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure [1989]) is one of Keanu’s earliest and most vacant boys, but does the San Dimas teen and rock saviour have the makings of a human golden retriever?
