Bessie Diop, a 17-year-old senior at Gateway High School, is honored in the Gazette for her remarkable achievements. Originally from Sudan, Bessie faced challenges adapting to a new culture but excelled academically, earning scholarships for her math skills and community service. She made history as the youngest person in her state to earn a pilot's license, inspired by trailblazers like Bessie Coleman and Amelia Earhart. Her first solo flight in a Cessna 150 gained widespread attention, and she dreams of becoming a commercial pilot while encouraging young Black women to pursue aviation. Known for her vibrant personality, Bessie compares herself to the sky—full of endless possibilities—and hopes to fly a biplane next. Her story reflects ambition, resilience, and a love for reaching new heights.
