The Dutch quest for independence threatened to destabilize much of the European world. What was the French reaction? What were they doing during these years, and why did they not take a more active role on one side or the other? Their story is the stuff movies and fantasies are made of: civil wars, assassinations, domestic infighting, and finally, official "peace" within.
