In the latter half of the 16th century, Spain became embroiled in a struggle with one of her tributaries. This was not a far away land, but very close to home. The Dutch quest for independence threatened to destabilize much of the European world. What was the French reaction? What were they doing during these years, and why did they not take a more active role on one side or the other? Their story is the stuff movies and fantasies are made of: civil wars, assassinations, domestic infighting, and finally, official "peace" within.

Our current focus will be on the Dutch quest for independence. Their quest helped give rise to the concept of the modern nation state. It is quite a story.
