A broken car keeps Scott out of the studio, but he joins Aaron by phone to discuss significant moments in American civil-rights history, on the first day of Black History Month – including the Thirteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, the Greensboro sit-in in 1960, and Rosa Parks’ brave stand (or brave sit, as it were) in 1954.

This week, Scott remembers the time in World War II when a wheat shortage briefly led the U.S. to ban sliced bread. Also: Martin Luther King, Jr. is born (though not originally with that name); two women make their careers by working with great apes; the famous international symbol of peace is created (originally a symbol of the push for nuclear disarmament); and Aaron pleads with people to make the arguments they actually believe, rather than whatever arguments conveniently support their position. December 15 is Bill of Rights Day, marking the 232nd anniversary of their ratification – and Scott is celebrating with his annual bell-ringing ceremony in Hillsborough, inviting everyone to the historic courthouse that day at noon for 232 seconds of consecutive bell ringing. He brings a few bells into the studio this week to demonstrate!

And Scott and Aaron also discuss other notable events this week in history, much of which revolves around flight: the Montgolfier brothers’ pioneering balloon flight in 1782, and of course the Wright brothers’ first flight in 1903.
