December 15 is Bill of Rights Day, marking the 232nd anniversary of their ratification – and Scott is celebrating with his annual bell-ringing ceremony in Hillsborough, inviting everyone to the historic courthouse that day at noon for 232 seconds of consecutive bell ringing. He brings a few bells into the studio this week to demonstrate!

And Scott and Aaron also discuss other notable events this week in history, much of which revolves around flight: the Montgolfier brothers’ pioneering balloon flight in 1782, and of course the Wright brothers’ first flight in 1903.

This week marks two significant anniversaries: the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, and the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. (Eleanor Roosevelt was a key figure in the drafting of that declaration – influenced not only by the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but also by the “Four Freedoms” idea championed by Franklin Roosevelt during his presidency.) Also this week: Topeka, Kansas is founded in 1854 by antislavery advocates, and a pioneering computer scientist is born.

This week, Scott discusses a heroic (and unlucky) chimpanzee who went to space in 1961 – and coming the other way, a meteor that injured an Alabama woman in the 1950s. Also, Scott celebrates two trailblazing Black Americans: a 19th-century inventor who patented the biscuit cutter, and Rosa Parks, who took her seat (and her stand) in Montgomery this week in 1955.

This edition of History Matters is historic in its own right: our last installment in University Place, before the station moves to East Franklin Street. That figure is Benjamin Banneker, who famously challenged Thomas Jefferson on slavery and reportedly helped save the design of Washington, DC.
