Well, for much of wizarding history, the defense of the magical world fell to a small handful of powerful ministry workers tasked with one simple goal: the enforcement of wizarding laws. -

Those responsible were known as Aurors... or dark wizard hunters..., and even though you've probably heard about them plenty of times, you've likely never heard their full history.
