We left last week's episode in a dark and uncertain place, with the sports first great star Lloyd Seay killed in a dispute over sugar and the rest of the drivers heading off to fight in World War 2.

In our final episode of the story we are going to discuss how stock car racing emerged out of this darkness and rose to new heights, only for NASCAR’s founding members to face a new crisis over the control and identity of the sport.

In our last episode (Part 1) we told a bit of the history of American moonshine, the drink that was known as “White Lightning” was a staple for survival on the American Frontier dating all the way back to the Revolution.

After prohibition gave the whole country a taste for the liquor, a new and dangerous profession emerged as drivers were called on to transport the valuable drink from the backwoods to the cities. Young men of the south mastered driving cars filled with moonshine, all while outrunning federal agents trying to bring down their operation.

It's a story that NASCAR doesn't want to tell, but the sports origins got it's beginnings in the deep south, where bootleggers drove stock cars full of whiskey to evade authorities.

In June of 1962 - three bank robbers escaped in the middle of the night from America's most notorious prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary.  They were never seen again.
