In recent years, carbon neutrality has become increasingly important as consumers become more environmentally conscious and demand sustainable products. Dr. Gloria Yao, Director of Project development of HKRITA, an expert in textile technology, discussed the current situation and challenges faced by China's luxury industry and provided insights on how to reduce carbon footprint.

The ITMA 2023 panel examined the textile and garment industry's progress towards circularity. Mr Edwin Keh, the CEO of HKRITA was one of the panelists in the discussion on sustainable materials, closed-loop production systems, and circular business models. Edwin evaluated whether the industry is on track to achieve a circular economy. Additionally, the panel identified further actions necessary to accelerate this transition.

Dr Alex Chan, Senior Research Manager at HKRITA shares the story behind the Green Machine. This innovative technology uses a chemical hydrothermal treatment to selectively decompose cotton into cellulose powders, which enables the separation of polyester fibres from the blends. 

Hong Kong generates tonnes of textile waste that ends up in landfills every day. To address this issue, a smart sorting system has been developed to identify garment type, fabric material, structure and colour by using artificial intelligence and image analysis.  This system is capable of automatically sorting used garment. One-way transfer moisture management fabric is developed for sporty fashion using bio-based ecofriendly material. Invented by Dr Yao, HKRITA Director of Project Development, the green textile is durable, adopting existing production process while boosting performance of the end products.

Net zero is not just the work of the textile industry, through the link-up of different sectors and entrepreneurs, the recycling efficiency can be doubled. Get inspired by the examples of recycling mass consumable products and the practice other sectors are doing to minimize the commercial waste.

Have you thought of the textile fibre can actually be recycled? The Green Machine, consulted from Dr Kanji Kajiwara, aims to recycle the polyester and cotton blended fibre from disposed garments.
