  • Why Money Matters In Achieving Menstrual Equity w/ Rachel Ettinger (PART 1)

    "It's not cute, it's not nice - it's necessary." - Rachel Ettinger

On today's episode, @anastasiabarbuzzi kicks off a very special series that she's worked on with two incredible women in the health advocacy space over the past year: Why Money Matters In Achieving Menstrual Equity.

If you saw $HMONEY’s latest Instagram post, you may already be asking yourself: What do periods have anything to do with money or personal finance? Well, they’re more related than you think.

Today’s guest began rooting for menstrual equity — which she’ll define in this episode — after being inspired by the taboo surrounding “anything to do with vaginas” in conversations with friends, family, and even co-workers in her former career as a morning radio and TV host.

In 2017, @rachettinger founded @shophereforher, a social enterprise that discusses health and challenges norms surrounding health education and compassionate healthcare for all folks. It was through Here for Her that Rachel discovered discussing the challenges that come with menstruating wasn’t cute, it wasn’t nice — it was necessary.

Think about it: Affording toilet paper is already an issue for many, so can you imagine how the cost of menstrual products affects women, gender non-conforming and trans folks too? Especially during the pandemic?

Rachel’s fight for #menstrualequity is based off of one hard fact: menstruation disproportionately affects people who menstruate compared to those who do not, and with having to afford menstrual products on top of all other expenses (rent, tuition, food, etc.), it becomes an equity issue.

Menstrual products are also unaffordable for people in shelters where Rachel does a lot of advocacy work, and she points out that they will use other means to get by, which only creates more health problems. If you’ve ever had to miss school or leave work due to being unprepared for your period, then you know what she’s talking about. The solution? Free menstrual products in public buildings for all.

Through Here for Her, Rachel has already managed to secure free menstrual products in all city-owned buildings in London, Ont., and now she’s working on a petition that will hopefully have Canada’s federal government make good on their promise of providing free menstrual products in federally regulated workplaces, which they fell back on in 2019.

In this episode, Rachel and Anastasia discuss all of this and more. Stay tuned for more on Part 2!

  • Why the #NewSchool Curriculum Prioritizes Personal Finance w/ Adam Halpert

“We all need to be prepared for the financial uncertainties that await us in life so that we can have confident, comfortable and secure lives.” - Adam Halpert

Did you know that one of Canada’s top universities now offers a course on personal finance? For FREE?!

If this is news to you, then get ready for a treat of an episode — @shmoneyhonies, meet @anastasiabarbuzzi's next special guest, @adamhalpert 🎓.

Adam’s first foray into the world of finance was working alongside his father and grandfather who had their own business as financial securities advisors. Years later, he began working on @mcgillu's Personal Finance Essentials course, a groundbreaking collaboration with the @globeandmail, funded by @rbc Future Launch.

If you’re familiar with $HMONEY’s mission, then you know that we’ve questioned why (for the most part) lessons about personal finance have been left out of school curriculum. Fortunately, Adam and his team @desautelsmcgill believe that there’s a lack of systematized personal finance training out there too.

Adam’s resume is impressive and it’s taken him all over the world, from studying at @nasa to serving as a @kiva.org fellow in Uganda, helping to bring financial inclusion to the unbanked poor. But today on the show, he helps Anastasia answer questions ranging from, “Why did we never learn anything about doing taxes or paying bills in school?!” to “Why have gender roles dictated who handles money in relationships for so long?”.

  • SOLO SHOW: Money $tories

"It’s easy to feel ashamed about money because there’s not a lot of people who like to talk about it. But if we’re so into hearing real, authentic stories, why not open the floor for easy, open, non-judgemental conversation about something people struggle with everyday? And girl, that's finances."

On today’s very first Solo Show, your host, Anastasia Barbuzzi, shares part of her money story with you, which is a large part of the reason why she launched $HMONEY Radio in the first place.

Anastasia carries a money story that starts like many others do. It begins with how her family handled money and valued financial wealth.

    Then suddenly, everything changed.

Listen in to hear about how one life-threatening accident turned into a life-altering experience that set Anastasia on the path she is today. She hopes you’ll ride along.

  • How to Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable w/ Not-Quite-Supermodel Kathy Tong

“Be prepared to be uncomfortable. At many points, no matter what trajectory you're on... And learn to if not like it, flow with it, because you're on a path.” - Kathy Tong

@kathyatong was slicing fish behind the counter of a Canada Safeway when a model scout waltzed in and asked to take her photo. The rest is pretty much history.

After joining the brood of 90s supermodels we all know and love, she racked up a high-profile client list that includes Neutrogena, the company she gained her breakout spokesmodel role from after faking French and German well enough to land the gig across the pond and here in North America too 🥐.

If you’re into video games, you’ve probably swooned over her Mona Sax in Max Payne 2. You also might’ve caught a glimpse of her in blockbusters featuring the likes of Alec Baldwin and even Lindsay Lohan in Blue Jasmine and Just My Luck.

More recently, Kathy published her first novel, Not-Quite-Supermodel, which is loosely based off her come up story as a young model just trying to make it (after never wanting to in the first place).

@anastasiabarbuzzi was lucky enough to read her first draft, and today on $HMONEY Radio, Kathy spills on how the industry has changed, what her understanding of personal finance was like before diving into such a precarious field of work and how it evolved, life in NYC with basically no budget 💸, and so much more.

If you’ve ever been curious about the behind the scenes of luxury fashion (particularly the iconic 90s/early 2000s), cinema, or just what the hell people are making in the associated jobs, this episode is for YOU. This one’s also for the dream chasers and aspiring freelancers who need a little bit of a push to keep going, especially when the money’s lookin’ rough.

  • How a 4% Fix Can Change Your Life w/ Karma Brown

"If you are not investing in your time, you are not investing in yourself." - Karma Brown

If you’re in a New Year’s slump or having major trouble managing your time in quarantine, this episode is for you.

Today, @anastasiabarbuzzi introduces you to @karmakbrown : award-winning journalist and author who you might’ve seen on @thesocialctv this week discussing the topic of her new book, The 4% Fix 🔧.

At 28-years-old, Karma “fell backwards” into her career as a print journalist and author after dreaming about becoming “the Katie Couric of the North” for most of her life. On her last day of class she was diagnosed with cancer, which led her to reevaluate her path forward.

Six national bestselling books later, and here we are. Anastasia spoke with Karma last summer before the release of her first non-fiction work and since its launch date in December 2020, it seems she’s turned everyone onto the idea of her 5:00 a.m. routine.

As someone who struggles with feeling like there aren’t enough hours in a day on a regular basis, Anastasia champions Karma's unrestrictive framework for its manageability and you'll learn about how it relates to money, personal finance and investment in this episode.

  • How Women in STEM Run the World w/ Jessica Kizovski

"I think we really need to pay attention to the messages we're sending young women and young girls about their future and what we expect of them." - Jessica Kizovski

@veriphyedbyjess (a.k.a Jessica Kizovski) is the founder, brand manager, and former lead product formulator at @veriphyskincare, a Canadian-made collection of clean, green skin care backed by science and a team of women in STEM (a.k.a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields).

Before launching her career as a #STEMinist , Jessica worked at @sephoracanada as a makeup artist while studying science so that she could eventually bridge her passions for beauty and theory, leading her to delve into cosmetic chemistry.

After learning more about the representation of women in STEM from her first guest on $HMONEY Radio, @themathguru (EP. 2), @anastasiabarbuzzi wanted to speak with Jessica about her brand’s unique mission in the beauty industry: to change how underrepresented and under appreciated women in STEM truly are.

In this episode, Jessica and Anastasia explore STEM as a major driver of the world economy, the reasons why we see less women pursue, and more women leave STEM careers, exciting product launches, industry stereotypes, gender biases, organizational diversity, and even the fact that Veriphy might be the only beauty brand with a scholarship for young women entering STEM-related programs at university.

Have you ever wondered about how you can embrace the concept of money as a simple exchange of energy? Have you ever been frustrated by the monetization of time? If you answered yes to either of those questions, this episode is for you.

Lisa O'Connor and @anastasiabarbuzzi met by chance over social media. Fascinated with Lisa’s unassisted recovery from Lyme Disease through her holistic practice of healing the mind, body and soul, Anastasia reached out in hopes of interviewing her for @style_canada, where she's now Digital Editor.

On today's show, they link up (virtually) to talk about emotional triggers related to finance (a.k.a STRESS), setting boundaries, and the theories of money as an exchange of energy and time equaling money, all during the height of COVID.

Lisa is a certified holistic nutritionist and practitioner, she studied social work at the University of South Africa, graduated from NYC’s prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology, and is a certified reiki, EFT and TFT practitioner. Not to mention, she’s a profound speaker.

Fresh out of business school from @mcgillu, @swoooooods became a senior investment analyst at a big equity mutual fund in Canada. Basically, she picked stocks for a living.

After figuring out the corporate life wasn’t for her and after taking an inspiring trip to Africa with an accountant friend, Silvi decided to start a personal finance education business because “there really wasn’t anything in the market for people who wanted to learn about money, yet it’s such a big part of our lives”.

Fast-forward to today after much success with Wild One Wealth, and Mrs. Woods now works with one of the largest online investing platforms in Canada, @wealthsimple, doing what she does best.

Today, Silvi chats with Anastasia about some of the most common issues women currently have with money, feelings about their financial health, and sharing it with others. Plus, she breaks down actionable steps that can help you get your affairs in order during the pandemic, stress-free ways to prepare for the future that won’t effect you in the moment, and simple mantras for creating a healthy money mindset.
