"From a white male perspective, there's a whole lot of boasting and bragging about money, but there's not a lot of conversation about, 'I'm struggling in this area.'" - Justin Peters
In school, Justin Peters had to memorize the periodic table, read Shakespeare, and learn how to find the limit of an equation (the limit does not exist). But once he entered the "real world," he wasn't prepared for it. Why hadn't he been offered practical classes like Intro to Filing Your Taxes, Healthy Carbs 101, or History of Making Friends and Being Social?
So, he founded The Struggle Is Real (TSIR), a podcast for millennials who don't know what they're doing but want to start figuring it out. Each episode solves a problem that young professionals will face throughout their twenties that wasn't covered in the classroom. Today, we detail how we've asked for raises, the money taboo, addressing finances with friends and family, battling burnout, and more.

"Financial therapy has a really important role in the destigmatization of what a lot of people refer to as the 'last taboo.' The last taboo being money." - Dr. Megan Ford
Dr. Megan Ford has a Ph.D. in Financial Planning, an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy, and B.S. in Psychology. She is also an advisor for Stackin, an app that connects people to their feelings about money. A self-described "math folk," Dr. Ford's childhood challenges with mathematics in school led her to have negative thoughts about handling money. She went through years of unpacking and healing her financial trauma before helping others with their money.
In today's episode, we discuss "the last taboo," rewriting your money story, how to step out of the financial shame cycles women get stuck in, how we skirt around conversations about money and internalize feelings about it, as well as the societal and systemic forces that influence the decisions we make with our money.

“People think we’re a lot further along than we are… The needle hasn’t moved much since the 90s.” - Stefanie O'Connell Rodriguez
This episode sets the tone for 2023 ✨
I'm a big fan of her newsletter, Too Ambitious, where she talks about work, money, and the price women pay for power, and that's only part of why I'm excited to have Stefanie O'Connell Rodriguez on the show.
Stefanie is an author and journalist covering how ambition touches women's lives, from money to power to career. She explores the costs of undermining ambition, the relationship between ambition and identity, and how ambition penalties differ across age, race, and gender. Stefanie is also the host of Real Simple Magazine's podcast, Money Confidential, and the founder of Statement Cards, a line of greeting cards that celebrates milestones beyond marriage and motherhood.
A go-to expert, Stefanie has appeared on ABC World News, CBSN, Fox Business, Bloomberg, and more. Her advice is featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, USA Today, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and several more publications.
I am so excited to let you in on this candid conversation where we discuss all the above, from gig work to 90s girl power, to salary negotiation and the #girlboss movement.

“It is the economic impact that women entrepreneurs have that is so vital to the health of the Canadian economy.” - Alison Kirkland
Did you know that a recent national survey conducted by Women’s Enterprise Organizations of Canada (WEOC) found that some women feel they won’t be legible for capital funding, so they don’t bother applying? Instead, they charge business expenses to their credit cards or use their savings to build businesses, damaging their credit rating and risking their livelihood.
On the other hand, when we support women entrepreneurs and give them access to the resources they need, our economy benefits directly. In today’s episode, Alison Kirkland, CEO of WEOC, unpacks all of this.
Alison was named the inaugural CEO of WEOC in September 2019. Since then, she has grown the organization from a Board-run initiative to a vital resource for women’s entrepreneurial support organizations across Canada. She also discusses:
