Tim Leichliter, president and director of operations for Ho‘omalu Ke Kai, shares the story behind Kaua‘i’s first coral restoration nursery—a multi-year effort rooted at Nō‘milu Fishpond (Lū‘aupele) and built through community, partnerships, and persistence.

Tim explains how their team collects “corals of opportunity” from man-made structures (instead of removing healthy coral from the reef), then uses careful quarantine and microfragmenting methods to help coral grow faster eventually fusing into larger, more mature colonies that can better support reef restoration.

You’ll also hear what it really takes behind the scenes: setbacks like facility damage, restarting timelines, and the long-game commitment it takes to do restoration work responsibly. Tim closes with ways the community can get involved—including volunteer workdays and where to learn more.

A major shoreline setback measure is moving again at the Kauaʻi County Council and Olivia explains how it could shape how the island manages coastal hazards, shoreline structures, and future development.

In this quick County Council update, we break down why councilmembers unanimously advanced Bill No. 2984 (the version recommended by the Planning Commission), what changed from earlier drafts, and what the bill aims to tighten up — including clearer technical definitions, stronger limits on repairs to existing shoreline structures to prevent “repairs” from becoming expansions, and better alignment between setback calculations, permitting, and enforcement. The measure passed first reading and is set to return for second reading on March 18 during a public hearing.
