In this episode, we are talking about ADHD and the gender differences between how it shows up in boys and girls, men and women.
ADHD has traditionally been studied through the lens of hyperactive boys, but many girls experience it very differently. Instead of obvious hyperactivity, symptoms can show up as overthinking, emotional dysregulation, masking, people-pleasing, and constantly feeling overwhelmed.
We are talking about why ADHD is so often missed in girls, why so many women only receive a diagnosis later in life, and how societal expectations can lead women to hide or mask their symptoms.
We also share some of our own experiences of feeling different growing up, navigating neurodivergence, and trying to understand our brains in a world that often wasn’t built for them.
In this episode we cover:
• How ADHD presents differently in girls vs boys
• Internalised vs externalised ADHD symptoms
• Masking and societal pressure on women
• Emotional dysregulation and feeling “too much”
• The challenges of getting diagnosed later in life
• Learning to understand and accept a neurodivergent brain

This week we’re talking about one of the most painful (and least explained) parts of ADHD: emotional dysregulation - and how it links to rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD).
From adult tantrums over hanging the washing out, to feeling physically angry during exercise, to spiralling because someone didn’t text back for 20 minutes - we unpack what emotional dysregulation actually feels like in real life.
We talk about growing up with ADHD rage, why small changes to routine can feel world-ending, and how RSD shows up in friendships, work and dating (including all the ways we’ve tried to mould ourselves just to be liked).
This episode is for anyone who’s ever thought: “Why am I reacting like this?” - and for anyone learning to be kinder to themselves while figuring it out.
Topics we cover:
– Emotional dysregulation & ADHD rage
– Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) explained
– ADHD meltdowns in adulthood
– Why boredom can feel like physical pain
– Masking, people-pleasing & dating
– Learning to be your authentic self
You’re not broken. You’re not dramatic. And you’re definitely not alone.
In the first episode of Hold On, What Was I Saying?, we dive into our personal journeys with ADHD, mental health, and the decision to start this podcast.
We talk candidly about the road to diagnosis, the life-changing impact of medication, and the joys (and chaos) of hyperfixations - hello, ADHD tax.
