Cynthia is happy to bring Dr. Timothy Patitsas back onto the podcast to talk about his book The Ethics of Beauty. When you are affected by trauma, how do you find beauty again? Many have felt trauma in one way or another during the last couple years of the pandemic, and Dr. Patitsas shares some tools that can help us look at everything that happens in our lives through the lens of our faith.
Timothy Patitsas is the newly-appointed Interim Dean at Hellenic College in Brookline, Massachusetts, the undergraduate counterpart to the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He concurrently serves as the Assistant Professor of Ethics in the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, a position he has held since the fall of 2005.
His main responsibility outside of teaching has been the organization and guidance of the St. Helen's Pilgrimage, a five to nine week-long intensive summer study travel of Orthodox spirituality and Modern Greek language conducted annually in Israel, Palestine, Turkey (Constantinople), Mount Athos, and Greece. Together with the Foundation for Hellenic College Holy Cross, Dr. Patitsas has since 2006 built the Pilgrimage into a premier formational experience for M.Div. students at the Seminary.
Dr. Patitsas has a book available from St. Nicholas Press, The Ethics of Beauty, a 750-page survey of the central role of Beauty in every aspect of the Orthodox approach to life, including war, trauma, psychology, gender, spirituality, bioethics, and social ethics. (see www.stnicholaspress.net )
He is also completing documentaries on the life of St. Amphilochios Makris and on Holy Week in Jerusalem with Beauty First Films ( www.beautyfirstfilms.com ), a non-profit film making company which he co-founded. He is the co-author of the Liturgical Seasons Calendar, a powerful aid to prayer and ecclesial self-identity available through Beauty First Films and Ancient Faith.

Today Cynthia brings a fairly specialized topic to you, but is it? How many people do we know who have had breast cancer? The information shared today could save a life or change lives for the better. Meet Robyn Towt, a breast cancer survivor and now activist who is making waves with legislation on a state to state level…and soon…God willing…nationally.
I am a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed in 2017. I had a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction breast implants with no other treatment or therapy. I suffered debilitating health issues from the breast implants that were used for reconstruction. After just four months I had them removed and chose to stay flat. After breast implant removal, my symptoms resolved and the experience led me to become an advocate for raising awareness about breast implant safety. My entire team of doctors failed to inform me that this could happen and I wondered how many other patients this was happening to. I wanted to be sure that this information is provided to all patients who are considering having breast implant surgery, whether it is for augmentation, reconstruction or prevention. I am passionate about patient safety and informed consent and I believe that every patient should have the proper information that is needed to make an educated and informed decision. I recently worked with Arizona legislators to pass an informed consent law for breast implant surgery and I am now working on similar legislation in other states.
I am extremely happy with my choice to stay flat. It is an empowering choice that I have fully embraced. I feel womanly, beautiful and whole and I want other women to understand what a beautiful choice flat can be. My hope is that surgeons will provide a more well rounded approach to offering surgical options for patients and for women to understand how rewarding, beautiful and freeing the flat choice can be.

Dr. Chacko chats with Cynthia about her journey to health. Based on what she learned first hand, she was able to change her practice and now God is able to use her journey to help her patients. Dr. Donna Chacko is a wife, mother, and grandmother who practiced medicine for nearly 40 years and now promotes health of body, mind, and spirit. Donna founded a ministry called Serenity and Health and loves to accompany others as they find their path to abundant health. She speaks, blogs, and offers programs at her church on these topics— and recently wrote a book entitled Pilgrimage: A Doctor's Healing Journey. Cynthia introduces you to Nic Hartmann today. Nic has written a book on concepts such as hygge, koselig, and sisu. Wonder what these words mean? And how about how to pronounce them? Learn along with Cynthia as Nic also connects these nordic practices to the Orthodox Christian faith and its traditions. Come along for a cozy chat!
Nic Hartmann is a folklorist, writer, and nonprofit leader based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. By day, he is the director of Family Promise of Linn County, a nonprofit that helps families facing housing crises find stability. By night, he is a knitter, comic artist and writer whose first book, Northern Lights of Christ, was released in October 2021 through Park End Books. During and after his graduate studies in folklore, Nic spent many years working as a public folklorist, doing cultural work as an oral historian, educator and content developer. He felt a deeper need to serve people who were struggling, eventually transitioning to social services work during the pandemic. He is interested in the ways that people can use creative strengths to fulfill basic human needs, and how everyday culture and tradition can shape our practices of loving our neighbor. At the same time, Nic has had a lifelong personal interest in the culture and traditions of the Nordic world, which led him to study abroad in Estonia, and ultimately served as a jumping off point for his journey to becoming an Orthodox Christian.
Nic and his wife, Jen, have two daughters, and are members of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids. He serves as a Sunday school teacher for St. George, as well as a member of the choir, and is part of the content team for Orthodox Journeys, a pan-Orthodox educational initiative based in Minneapolis.
