Nearly two decades after she first emerged in the entertainment industry, Olivia Wilde made her directorial debut with immediate critical acclaim. Her indie film ‘Booksmart’ was a crowd favorite and was even nominated for a Golden Globe. Since then, Wilde has stepped up and directed another feature, the highly anticipated ‘Don’t Worry Darling’, and is rumored to be attached to a Marvel movie. If nothing else, Wilde’s rapid success is proof of how desperately Hollywood needs and wants representation. ‘Booksmart’ was a movie about empowering women, had a main ensemble cast of women, and focused on an LGBTQ+ love interest. It ticked a lot of boxes of things that are rarely seen in Hollywood and had amazing success. Times are changing and Hollywood needs to change with it.

Although Barry Jenkins has been in the entertainment industry for over a decade, he shot to fame in 2016 after the release of ‘Moonlight’, which he directed as well as co-wrote with Tarell Alvin McCraney. ‘Moonlight’ tells the story of Chiron, an African-American coming to terms with his identity and sexuality. Starting in the 1980s, this incredible coming-of-age story won awards for Best Motion Picture of the Year at the Academy Awards, Best Motion Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes, and many more. Ever since then, Jenkins has sky-rocketed to the forefront of innovative and diverse storytelling and serves as a role model for many other directors.

"When Julianne Moore was cast to play Gloria Steinem in Julie Taymor’s 2020 biopic, it was like a homecoming. It’s a part Moore was destined to play. Like Steinem, Moore has never been afraid to fight for justice--she’s an active member of Everytown for Gun Safety and she marched in protest after the shooting at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. As an Artist Ambassador for Save the Children, Moore campaigns to provide healthcare, education, and opportunities to children disenfranchised by natural disasters and global conflict.

She’s also a leader of Time’s Up, an organization that stands up against harassment, assault, and discrimination in the workplace. She phone-banked for South Carolina Senate candidate Jaime Harrison, who was narrowly defeated, and later for Georgia Senate candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, who won, flipping the control of the US Senate to the Democratic party. Win or lose, Moore has the same spirit of perseverance she admires in her hero Steinem."

If you’ve seen ‘Pulp Fiction’ or ‘Austin Powers’, then you’ve seen parodic examples of rear projection, the old cinematic technique wherein a moving background is projected through a screen behind the actors, often for driving scenes. It’s largely been replaced by chroma key compositing, but the basic premise of the concept seems logical and intuitive--why not use pre-existing footage to create background images that would otherwise be difficult, expensive, or impossible to produce?

If you’ve seen my page on Hollywood Insider’s website, you know I’m a huge fan of the classic sitcom ‘The Office.’ As much as I love Michael’s silly antics or Jim’s ongoing mission to be the snarkiest man alive, my heart will always belong to Creed. How to describe the character Creed? Imagine if your grandpa was a meth dealer, an ex-cult leader, all at the same time. Creed is the king of hilarious one-liners and a man of mystery. And he is played by and at least partially based on his real-life counterpart, actor Creed Bratton. Bratton has lived the life of a legend; he’s a rockstar, an actor, and the ultimate symbol of how to be epic in your late-70s. It’s a career that could even make his workaholic Wild at Heart and Dog Eat Dog co-star Nicolas Cage jealous. The actor is refreshingly egalitarian--he speaks of his time working on Speed 2: Cruise Control and his collaborations with Lars Von Trier with the same twinkle in his eye. He’s just as comfortable working in blockbuster franchises as he is working in A24 arthouse dramas.

LGBTQ representation in media has been at the forefront of queer theory for some time now. From early tropes of gay characters being sassy, superficial background characters in shows like ‘Sex and the City’ to modern thought-provoking, intersectional representation of LGBTQ life as exhibited in films such as ‘Moonlight,’ the queer community’s representation in the entertainment industry has made tremendous strides over the past few decades. With these more fleshed out and empathetic portrayals of queer characters, the dehumanization of LGBTQ people is gradually weathered in the process of this normalization. Unfortunately, this progress has not come easily. It has taken decades for queer people to even be allowed to openly express their identities in media and the battle for equal representation in entertainment rages to this day for the most marginalized of the LGBTQ community, namely trans people of color. The trans community is among the most vulnerable in the world (we saw this in the robust transphobic agenda of the Trump administration). It takes brave leaders to advocate for and implement positive trans representation in the entertainment industry to create a safer, more compassionate world for trans people. Fortunately for our society, Laverne Cox has defied all odds in succeeding as a trans actress and uplifting the entire LGBTQ community along with her.

Born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell, singer and online sensation Billie Eilish began garnering attention in 2015 after the release of her song “Ocean Eyes”. In the wake of the release of her documentary ‘Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry’, we’re taking a deep dive into the life of this celebrity and how she rose to stardom. Becoming An Overnight Sensation After the release of her first song on the music platform SoundCloud, Eilish steadily began to gain more and more attention. “Ocean Eyes” was recognized by many popular radio stations and their hosts including Zane Lowe and BBC One. Within six months, Eilish had gotten a publicist, who in turn connected her with Chanel, the luxury fashion company. Within the year of the release of “Ocean Eyes”, Eilish was signing a recording deal with Interscope Records.

Comic book movies have taken over the film industry over the past decade. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is now the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time. Early successes in the medium were Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man,’ Bryan Singer’s ‘X-Men,’ and Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher’s ‘Batman’ films. And Classics like the 60s ‘Batman’ television series with Adam West and the original ‘Superman’ movies with Christopher Reeve are the roots of the genre in television and film. The latter showed the potential of comic book adaptations critically and commercially. It was DC’s ‘The Dark Knight’ that revolutionized the genre, though. This Christopher Nolan film paved the way for studios making comic book movies their tent poles going forward.  Marvel and DC are the movies that usually get highlighted when looking back at the history and success of the genre, however, there are other realms of comic strips that are iconic in their own rights. They deserve to be highlighted for what they’ve brought to the table. These other comic strips come in the forms of graphic novels, manga, and comics (outside of Marvel and DC) that were adapted to film and television with enormous success.

Many times the expression ‘jack of all trades’ is followed with ‘master of none’ but this could not be further from the truth when referring to the legendary actor, writer, comedian, producer, and director, Ben Stiller. He’s been delivering impressive artistic projects for over four decades and is one of the most recognized names and faces in the entertainment industry. The son of iconic comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, Stiller was around showbusiness his entire life. He and his sister Amy were well-known in the comedy circuit at places like The Improv and ‘The Mike Douglas Show’. He would later enroll as a film student at University of California, Los Angeles, but dropped out after nine months to pursue an acting career in New York, which, as we all know, paid off enormously for him and his hundreds of millions of fans.
