On June 23, 1972, in Southfield, Michigan, a baby girl named Selma would enter our world and go on to create a legacy of impact, truth, and inspirational love. Young Selma would then go on to graduate high school in Michigan and venture out to the Big Apple as an aspiring photographer that is, before finding her true calling while taking acting classes at The Stella Adler Conservatory and Stonestreet Studios). From then on, Selma would blossom into a valiant woman and an inspirational human. Selma received her first role at the age of 23 for a single appearance as Penelope Ghiruto in 1995’s ‘The Adventures of Pete & Pete,’ a comedy TV series about two red-headed brothers. At the age of 24, she would get her first feature role as Pretzel Cart Lesbian in 1996's 'The Brocolli Theory,' a film that claims itself to be an unromantic comedy while still being critically claimed as a romantic comedy.

A couple of years ago, you would be forgiven for not knowing the name Florence Pugh. Now, the young star appears set to take over Hollywood with an impressive resume, an Oscar nomination, and a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - all before she turned twenty-four. After landing her first role at seventeen (from her first professional audition, no less), Pugh has risen through the ranks of the industry by taking on complex and engaging roles in both film and television. She has proved her talent and range time and time again - and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.

On August second, my phone lit up with a Twitter notification from the account @teamfrankdaily reading: “our hearts are shattered for Frank and his Family. Rest in peace @rryanbreaux”. Frank Ocean’s brother Ryan Breaux, along with Ryan’s friend Ezekial Bishop, had died in a car crash. Scanning the text on my phone, the words “Frank”, “hearts are shattered” and “rest in peace”, froze my world for the longest millisecond I’ve ever known. After carefully rereading, and discovering that it was Ryan who had passed, I sat in shock for a different reason. Although I do not know Frank or his brother, (and will not pretend to), I know pain. I owe Frank Ocean my current state as an artist and it’s time I personally give him his flowers. I am not an award show or an acclaimed music critic, I am just a fan whose life has changed with incredible music from a brilliant artist. An Introduction to Meaningful Music from Frank Ocean It wasn’t until eighth grade that I opened Apple Music on my new iPhone 6 and started my free trial. After 13 years I was finally beginning to take control of my music consumption, finding out what type of music I actually liked, instead of just listening to whatever the radio introduced me to. When I discovered Frank Ocean a year later, he revolutionized my music taste, and thus who I was as a person. At every major occurrence of my life since ninth grade, I have listened to Frank Ocean. I listened to him on just about every plane ride, every long road trip, and just to pass time. Frank Ocean’s music gives me an appreciation for beautiful things; as an artist, Frank Ocean taught me how to be an artist. Listening to his music taught me how to tune into the art around me, to see it, and hear it too. In just about every moment of stillness, I listen to Frank Ocean and open my eyes to the gorgeousness around me.

The genre of war films has been explored regularly throughout the years. These movies come in many different packages. There are standard installments where the message behind the film is the chaos of war and the lack of meaning behind the conflicts. Many of the Hollywood films over the years incorporate these messages in different stories from different wars. They are important messages, and there is a reason the genre is still explored today, but what doesn’t always get highlighted is the perspective of the other side. The movie ‘Valkyrie’ comes to mind when thinking about an American production told from the point of view of Germans. While the film can be considered well-done, with a solid leading performance from Tom Cruise, eyebrows were raised at this American telling of a German tale. This isn’t the only time a famous American movie decided to tell a foreign story. Another example is ‘Letters from Iwo Jima.’ Again, this can be considered a well-done film. It won an Oscar for Sound Editing and was nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Writing - Original Screenplay. Crucially, for this story, Iris Yamashita was involved in the writing.

While Steven Yeun is best known for his role as Glenn Rhee in ‘The Walking Dead,’ it’s now abundantly clear that the role was merely the beginning of an illustrious career. Through a variety of acting roles in character-driven films and animated shows, leading up to this year’s release of ‘Minari,’ Yeun has proved himself as a deeply empathetic and honest presence on the screen – an actor who no doubt has the chops to be nominated for this year’s Best Actor award. Playing Fan Favorite Glenn Rhee in ‘The Walking Dead’ From the moment Yeun’s character Glenn Rhee saved Rick Grimes from a military tank overrun by Walkers (zombies) in episode 2 of ‘The Walking Dead,’ he was an instant fan-favorite. The first survivor we meet in this post-apocalyptic world, Glenn set the standard for the absolute best of humanity one could see in a zombie outbreak – putting his own life at risk to help a stranger escape his otherwise inevitable demise. As a character, Glenn flourished as a positive force within Rick’s group – the kind of “everyman” that everyone trusted. This kind of altruism is something the characters seem to chase for the rest of the show’s tenure, struggling to find a safe home amongst strangers who most likely are only thinking of their own survival.

Studio Ghibli is one of the most magnificent and influential studios in Cinema history. It was founded in 1985 by Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata, and Hayao Miyazaki. To give readers a brief insight into the depth of the studio’s impact on film is this emotional tribute by ex-Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Disney, John Lasseter, “Whenever we get stuck at Pixar or Disney, I put on a Miyazaki film sequence or two, just to get us inspired again.” The list of famous names attached to the films of Studio Ghibli’s English dubbed versions is enormous. Some of the standouts include Patrick Stewart, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, Dev Patel, Tom Holland, Saoirse Ronan, Kirsten Dunst, Tina Fey, Anne Hathaway, John Cho, Lucy Liu, Christian Bale, Claire Danes, Gillian Anderson, Jada Pinkett Smith, Billy Crudup, and Keith David. Five of Studio Ghibli’s films feature on IMDb’s Top Rated Movies list, and many of their movies regularly feature on top animated films and best movies of all times lists. Roger Ebert’s website has a page dedicated to the Studio Ghibli collection, and in his four out of four stars praise of ‘My Neighbor Totoro,’ he states, “Whenever I watch it, I smile, and smile, and smile.”

A News in Health article discusses how interacting with animals has been shown to decrease stress levels and lower blood pressure. Animals can also reduce loneliness and increase feelings of social support, as well as boost your mood. There are so many benefits of having an animal in your life, and films have been able to tap into this benefit over the years. For many movies, an essential role for heart and depth or comedic relief can come from animals or pets. The term “man’s best friend” was coined for a reason. It is no surprise that many films over the years incorporate these beings into their stories. Animals in film are not limited to dogs, though. The films we discuss below showcase some of the best examples of animals stealing the show.

There’s a reason why today’s youth are called “Gen Z;” it stands for Zendaya. You may know her from the upcoming Netflix film, Malcolm & Marie, but Zendaya has been a force to be reckoned with for over a decade. Ever since her Disney Channel debut, the actress has participated in shows like Euphoria and films like The Greatest Showman, even staking her claim in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider-Man’s MJ.  Zendaya - Subverting the stereotype of the Disney Star  Zendaya made her acting debut in Disney Channel’s Original Series Shake It Up when she was just 14 years old. She played the practical, level-headed Rocky Blue to Bella Thorne’s impulsive CeCe Jones, as the two best friends pursued their dreams of becoming professional dancers. In retrospect, this role effectively established Zendaya as a triple threat. Not only did she act and dance in the show, but she eventually debuted with original songs such as Something to Dance For and Swag it Out, as well as a self-titled album called Zendaya, during her Disney tenure. All the while, she was featured in Disney Channel Original Movies and guest-starred in a variety of their shows. These consecutive, exponential releases cemented Zendaya as the ultimate family-friendly role model in the early 2010s.

There are a lot of photos lying around my childhood home of me as a young boy posing like Spider-Man, with the three-pronged web-shooting hand configuration and legs bent like the In-N-Out logo. Sam Raimi’s trilogy of ‘Spider-Man’ films came out at just the right time of my formative years for me to incessantly fantasize about swinging from building to building. However, little Danny boy didn’t have the strongest grasp or understanding of authorship, celebrities, and cameo appearances–I would play the ‘Spider-Man’ game for the original PlayStation many times over but didn’t understand who the quirky narrator was for a long time. He introduced himself at the beginning, “Welcome, true believers and newcomers alike! Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee here.” I wondered to myself, who is Stan Lee? What does this have to do with the game? Then I would watch the movies and notice an old man with a distinctive voice popping up here and there. Wait, is that him on the beach in ‘X-Men’? Who was this man, insistent on infiltrating my beloved superhero media?
