La Reserva Federal anuncia el fin de la lucha contra la inflación con un recorte considerable de la tasa de medio punto.
El miércoles, la Reserva Federal redujo su tasa de interés de referencia en un inusualmente grande medio punto, un cambio drástico después de más de dos años de tasas altas que ayudaron a controlar la inflación pero también hicieron que los préstamos fueran dolorosamente costosos para los consumidores estadounidenses.
El recorte de tasas, el primero de la Fed en más de cuatro años, refleja su nuevo enfoque en apuntalar el mercado laboral, que ha mostrado claros signos de desaceleración. La medida de la Fed, que se produce apenas unas semanas antes de las elecciones presidenciales, también tiene el potencial de alterar el panorama económico justo cuando los estadounidenses se preparan para votar.
Los responsables de la política monetaria de la Reserva Federal también señalaron que esperan recortar su tasa clave en medio punto adicional en sus dos últimas reuniones de este año, en noviembre y diciembre. Y prevén cuatro recortes de tasas más en 2025 y dos en 2026.
En una declaración y en una conferencia de prensa con el presidente Jerome Powell, la Reserva Federal estuvo más cerca que nunca de declarar la victoria sobre la inflación.
“La economía estadounidense está en un buen lugar”, agregó, “y nuestra decisión de hoy está diseñada para mantenerla allí”, dijo Powell.

Cámara de Representantes rechaza proyecto de ley de financiación gubernamental vinculado a prueba de ciudadanía para nuevos votantes.
El miércoles, la Cámara de Representantes rechazó la propuesta del presidente Mike Johnson, que habría vinculado la financiación temporal del gobierno federal con un mandato de que los estados exijan una prueba de ciudadanía cuando las personas se registren para votar.
Los próximos pasos en materia de financiación del gobierno son inciertos. Los legisladores no están cerca de completar el trabajo sobre la docena de proyectos de ley de asignaciones anuales que financiarán a las agencias federales durante el próximo año fiscal, por lo que deberán aprobar una medida provisional para evitar un cierre parcial cuando ese año presupuestario comience el 1 de octubre.
La votación fue de 220 a 202. Ahora, Johnson probablemente buscará un Plan B para evitar un cierre parcial, aunque no estaba listo antes de la votación para compartir detalles de dicha propuesta.
Johnson retiró el proyecto de ley de consideración la semana pasada porque carecía de los votos para aprobarse. Trabajó durante el fin de semana para ganar el apoyo de sus compañeros republicanos, pero no pudo superar las objeciones sobre los niveles de gasto de algunos miembros, mientras que otros dijeron que no están a favor de ninguna resolución continua, insistiendo en que el Congreso vuelva a aprobar la docena de proyectos de ley de asignaciones anuales a tiempo y uno a la vez. Exigir a los nuevos votantes que presenten una prueba de ciudadanía se ha convertido en una de las principales prioridades del año electoral para los republicanos, lo que plantea el espectro de los no ciudadanos que votan en los EE. UU. a pesar de que ya es ilegal hacerlo y las investigaciones han demostrado que este tipo de votación es poco frecuente.
Los opositores también dicen que un requisito de este tipo privaría del derecho al voto a millones de estadounidenses que no tienen un certificado de nacimiento o un pasaporte a mano cuando tienen la oportunidad de registrarse en su escuela, iglesia u otros lugares cuando se realizan las campañas de registro de votantes.
