Honoring father and mother is a lifelong command from God, carrying a promise of blessing and a serious responsibility to show respect, gratitude, and practical care. To "set light by" parents is to treat them with contempt, dismiss their worth, or regard their needs as an unwanted burden. Religious gifts, church attendance, and outward devotion cannot replace obedience to this command. Honor does not require pretending that parents have never done wrong, but their failures do not excuse personal wrongdoing or remove each person's accountability before God. Forgiveness and a refusal to act out of bitterness are essential, even in difficult family relationships. Children need to be taught this respect from their earliest years, and that responsibility continues into adulthood, especially when aging parents need care and assistance. Honoring parents is a foundational part of love and order in the home and society. God takes both its observance and its violation seriously, and genuine love for Him must reach beyond religious words into the way parents are treated.
