When designing a living space Adolf Loos didn’t rely on the usual floor plan, but rather advocated a concept known as the Raumplan—the spatial plan of a house in three dimensions, without the restriction of uniform storey- or ceiling heights.

Initially, steel-skeleton construction or reinforced-concrete frame constructions were only used in industrial and commercial buildings, but thanks to Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, they also became commonplace in residential construction in the 1920s. An impressive example is the modernist villa that Mies built for Fritz and Grete Tugendhat.

The best-known design for the housing project Neues Frankfurt in the 1920s is the kitchen. This standardised, modular system was installed 10,000 times until 1930, and numerous adaptations found their way into various housing projects in Frankfurt. Unlike the traditional eat-in kitchen, the Frankfurt Kitchen was designed as a functional, hygienic cooking workroom.

Frequently cited as the first (female) modern interior designer, Elsie de Wolfe traded her profession as a theatre actress in her native New York in favour of taking on lucrative interior design projects. With her long-term partner Elisabeth Marbury, de Wolfe purchased the Villa Trianon and spent the next decade renovating it.

Throughout his career, Cecil Beaton worked in a range of creative fields including set and costume design. His designs for domestic interiors applied a vibrant and oftentimes opulent aesthetic, like he applied in Ashcombe. The house became the site of lavish social gatherings, and one of its most striking features was its collaborative, creative atmosphere.
