There has never been a stronger call than now for the people of God to be holy. A people set apart by the way they act, the way they love and the way they serve others. Sometimes it can feel like the pursuit of holiness is an impossible race. The fact is we can win the pursuit because we are both dead and alive. Have you ever found yourself doing something you know you should not do. Whether it be a little white lie or one of the biggies, you will always think, “Why did I do that?” and “Why can I not stop it?”. If you have ever been at the crossroads of wanting to do the right thing but doing the wrong thing instead then have heart. You are in good company! The apostle Paul was encouraging the church in Rome to see that being a believer in Jesus Christ is not a path of “perfection” but a fight! A fight to be Holy. If this is you, where are you in your fight today?

God has raised a bar for Christians that is too high for them to hurdle in their own strength. God expects us to be holy just as He is holy [1 Peter 1:15-16] This expectation is not just for those in ministry, but everyone who calls upon Jesus as their Savior and Lord. The more we learn about and strive to be holy like God, the more our own sinfulness is revealed. Our pursuit of happiness often leads us to take shortcuts, make mistakes, carry regrets and experience pain when decisions are made on the basis of what we want, rather than what God wants for us. The sin of placing our wants for ourselves over the wants God has for us will lead to a life that God has NOT intended for us to live. God calls you to live life today as He designed it. God knows you better than you know yourself. He sees the whole puzzle while you only see your piece. Trust God’s call today to be holy and live the life He intends you to live. The first step in living that life is to begin taking your sin seriously.
