  • Thursday's Rant of the Day: What is it about our 'taste' for local news?

Within about 10 minutes of one another on Wednesday, we got official word of two stories.

    • In Adairsville, a flooring company announced plans for its first U.S.-based campus, 238 jobs and a $26 million investment.
    • In Cartersville, Chicken Salad Chick confirmed plans to open a restaurant in a site that once was home to Wendy’s and later Chicken World.
    • So which story drew the most eyes, the most reaction, the most social media interaction?

You guessed it: Chicken Salad Chick’s plans to open this spring across from Cartersville’s Target. At one point, the reaction was 10 to 1 in favor of those now-familiar 12 flavors of chicken salad.

      • Wednesday's Rant of the Day: Time to recycle the fake Christmas tree in front of Rome City Hall.

The fake tree was designed to be the new and improved tree to replace the real one that came down in front of city hall. That tree, we were told, was diseased and had to go. We never saw the autopsy report.

Of course, that long-dead tree was the one Santa Claus lit each year at the end of the Christmas parade. The beautiful tree adjoining the Rome Floyd Chamber subbed the next year – and did a wonderful job.

But after that, a fake tree made its debut; and an artificial one has served ever since.

Let’s face it: We’re not embracing a Norman Rockwell moment each year when city crews break out the boxes and cherry picker, and erect the plastic pyramid. Carolers didn’t exactly surround them throughout the day although we wonder if a few hecklers had a word or two to share. Those words likely were a bit stronger than bah humbug.

        • Tuesday's Rant of the Day: Enough, already, of the BLANK of the decade (fill in the blank).

Story of the decade? Oh, wait, there's more. Try songs. Recording artists. TV shows. Movies. Football teams and football coaches – high school, college and pro. We’re sure there are dozens more on the way before we flip the calendar at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1.

What’s interesting is seeing the rehashing of the rehash in this era where news stories and events don’t even last 24 hours, let alone until the next day. There’s just too much coming at us, so quickly and almost effortlessly, that we get spoiled. We want another news fix or sports fix right away. It’s called info addiction.

But now they want to go all the way back to 2010? That's news to us.

All we can say is pray – and those are words you’ve rarely hear from us. And thank you for those prayers."
