The Gift Sealer

We entered into this triune series for the specific purpose of having us understand that Salvation is a gift, a gift that only needs to be received. That it is nothing more complicated than that, that it is as simple as that, that there is nothing more than any need do but receive the gift offered to him by God, the gift for which only the death of Christ could procure.

We will find that within this triune study we undertake, that all three persons of the Godhead are most specifically involved in your salvation;

God the Father (The Gift Bearer), God the Holy Spirit (The Gift Sealer) and; God the Son (The Gift Procurer).

It is one of the most amazing studies and I do pray that you might glean some of the wonderful gems that are found herein.

In the first message, we spoke of the condemnation of all of mankind, how that you and I were the objects of God’s wrath, that we were all Naughty, wicked and sinful, that none of us deserves heaven and all are perfectly deserving of hell. 

We saw that there was absolutely nothing we could do in our own strength to save ourselves, 

Isaiah 64:6

6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Then we spoke about the gift of God, that is Salvation. God being the Gift Bearer. We highlighted that God was the giver and that salvation is the gift.

We looked at the reality that this “gift of God” is an undiminished gift, that it is eternal, that those who belong to Christ “shall never perish”, (those are his words not mine see Jn 10:28). 

They are preserved, kept against that day, writes Paul in 2 Tim 1:12.

We had seen that this undiminished gift cannot be added to, nor taken away from: You do not gain more salvation because you have been long a Christian, nor less salvation because you entered the Lords labours in the final hour. 

In this I highlighted salvation itself as it is presented for us in the parable Jesus gave of the Kingdom of Heaven in Matt 20.

(Now this says nothing about Reward or the Loss of reward, only salvation itself, those are subjects for another time)

Now, the triune aspect of this Gift is going to be highlighted through this three part series, there will be overlap both of consideration and scriptures.

God is featured in the first message as the gift bearer, the giver of eternal life, the gift of salvation.The Holy Spirit will feature in todays sermon as “the Gift Sealer”, he is both given as a gift, inseparably linked to salvation, but also as the sealer of the gift.Jesus Christ will be highlighted in the last sermon as “the Gift Procurer” as the Son given.

There are two elements to the sermon this morning respecting the Holy Spirit, two and two only can I deal with and I pray that you have them both firmly implanted in your understanding.

The Holy Spirit Is Given At Salvation (Identified as The gift of God)The Holy Spirit Seals Our Salvation (Guarantee, earnest, down payment. He is the Gift Sealer)

The Holy Ghost  At Salvation

Luke 11:13 

13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

There are many considerations that can be given to the passage which is before us, but I do not want us to be distracted from one simple point, and that is the nature of the Gift directed toward us, that is, the Gift of the Holy Spirit.

This is THE GIFT OF GOD

John 4:10 

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

When Jesus spoke of the Living water to the woman at the well, this was what he was referring to. The Gift of the Holy Spirit of God

Pt 1: Salvation

At the culmination of the youth camp this week, I was struck by how many of the children from Church backgrounds were struggling with the understanding of the salvation of the soul. Many understand that Jesus died for them, they understand that he took upon himself their own sin, and that believing in that work they should be saved, but many struggled to understand that Salvation is not something we work for, salvation is not something that comes and goes, salvation is not tentative, eternal life is a gift. 

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish…” (Jn 10:28)

The title of this short series is The Gift.

Story:

She was only five years old at the time, but she remembered the gift she got from her father so clearly. It was not much by today’s standards, but when father revealed from behind his back what was in his hand she was over-joyed. Adele was never awake when her father went to work, nor was she awake when he came home, he worked most hours of every day, he needed to because the cost of living in Hungary in 1945 was the most extreme ever seen in Europe. 

She only ever saw her father on Sundays, today was Tuesday and it was a Christmas day she would remember all her life. With no small amount of drama, her tall father stood there with both hands behind his back and asked her to pick one, she chose and as he swung his arm around she could see the bright coloured fruit that took up the entire palm of his hand, it was an orange. 

Adele was elated and snatched it immediately from her father’s hand, ran to tell her mother and then back to thank her father for a gift she would always remember and retell, first to her children, and then to her grandchildren. No doubt, even at the age of five years, she told everybody she could about the rare gift that she received that Christmas morning.

What she did not understand was what it cost her father.

THE GIFT OF GOD

When I was a small child there was no doubt I looked forward to Christmas more than I did even for my own birthday, there was something special about it for me, I don’t really know what it was, perhaps it was because everyone I knew also waited for that day to come.

That is also true for the nation of Israel, all the people looked forward to the coming of the messiah, the one that would give to the people the salvation of their souls.

 But there was something else I enjoyed about Christmas as a small child, I loved telling everyone what I got. When school came around again it would be one of the first conversations we all had as Children.

Its interesting to see that, after the woman heard of the “Gift of God”, the text says;

The Time Was Right

The time was right for Christ to come into the World.

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isa 9:6-7)

The passage that we have before us this morning is not an unusual one to be reading during Christmas time. It is a passage written long before the time of Christ, it was written between the years of King Ahaz and that of the reign of King Hezekiah, about 750 years before the Child spoken of (Jesus Christ) would be born into the world.

The time was not yet right for him to come into the world, but the time was right for God to specifically prophesies of his coming into the world by the prophet Isaiah.

The time would come when a Child shall be born and a son shall be given, a time when the government of the world will be upon this same man’s shoulders and a time that this son given shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. And a time of just government forever.

But that time would not be yet. In fact, his coming into the world would not be for another seven and ½ centuries.

Throughout history, God worked in accord with his timeline. The time when he dealt in certain ways with certain people according to his specific purpose.

We refer to these times as distinct “dispensations”, distinct periods in which God administered his specific purpose upon the sons of men. As you read the Bible in its context, you can’t help but notice these things come to pass.

God administered his ways differently during the time of Adam and Eve before the fall of man, than he did with man after the fall.

God administered his purpose according to his own will when he called Abram out of the Ur of the Chaldees, and away from all the heathen world before him and around him.

God chose a people and gave his law during a specific period in history in order to show his power and his purpose to a world that did not yet know him personally.

God administered both his judgments and his grace during the captivity of Israel

And when the time was right, God was manifest in the flesh (1 Tim 3:16), he revealed himself as Emanuel, God with us, Jesus Christ. Indeed, the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the father,) full of grace and truth. (John 1:14).

Different times throughout history that God had different dealings with man.

And the time that Christ came, marked what would become some two thousand years of opportunity for the forgiveness of sin, two thousand years of grace, two thousand years of amnesty for those, and only those, who believe Christ came to seek and the save that which was lost (Luke 19:10).

THE TIME OF IGNORANCE IS OVER

ACTS 17:22-31

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
