God, The Unity Within Himself

5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: 6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our passage speaks of a prayer toward unity among the brethren, among the church that has its purpose in Glorifying God with one mind and one mouth, we are to be “likeminded” says the text, our minds and our hearts are to be knit at the soul and in every way we are to join ourselves together in the worship of God with one mouth.

It is a picture of God himself. That which he desires for us is that which he has already within himself, it is his nature, it is attributed to his very being, God is one and there is no division within him.

The first few words of the passages establishes the foundation.

Now the God of patience and consolation

Here we see that Paul begins this portion with his focus upon the characteristic of God that is a marker of his identification the God of patience and consolation.

Earlier we witnessed the patience and comfort of the scriptures, and now we see they stem from the God of patience and consolation. We have the one because they come from the nature of the other, so too it is for the unity of believers. 

So this sets up for us that what comes after as a prayerful command having its foundation in the likeness of God himself. We are to be likeminded, we are to be united because God has Unity Within Himself.

We need only turn to one Gospel account to bring out this incredible unity.

John 1:1-3

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In the 14th verse the identity of who The Word is that was with God, and that was God

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Here God shows the Unity Within Himself, in his very being and identity.

In verse three of Johns introduction it says; All things were made by him; (by who? By God) and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Yet Ephesians 3:9 tells us that God, “created all things by Jesus Christ”.

And to ensure we don’t get mistaken here, we have Colossians 1:14 to 17, speaking specifically of Christ saying  14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Here God shows the Unity Within Himself, as the creator of all things.

Turn forward to John 5:16

Jesus spoke of his work as that which God works; when he was persecuted by the Jews for healing on the sabbath day, 

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

Notice there that the Jews understood exactly the claim that Jesus was making, that is, making himself equal with God.

And did Jesus shy away from that claim? On the contrary…

 19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the F

Behold The Man

The consideration I had respecting this message this morning is related to that of the father, but more importantly the father as a man.

My desire is to give consideration to what that means and to analyze ourselves in light of what it is to be a man. It’s not an easy subject to address, many people have their own idea of what a man is, what their picture of a man should look like. 

In a world that is making it fashionable to denigrate men, to make boys even ashamed of being male in school, to create television commercials showing men as bumbling fools who need women to lead them, its not surprising that we have such a lack of real men willing to stand up for what is right, willing to be the men they need to be for their families and to lead them.

There are standards in the world by which we learn to measure almost everything today. We are able to calibrate electronic devices using these standards. Weight, length, volume, area, levels, angles and even time have standards by which we can compare a true line, but what is the measure of a man?

More than any time in history before, we need men to be men today, but where is the standard we can look to?

In my sermon today there is only ONE man to behold as the true measure of a man and that is Jesus Christ. 

We have in the bible “the first man Adam, who was made a living soul”, but we have for our life the last Adam, that is Christ, who was made a quickening spirit” 1 Cor 15:45.

HE is our standard, and HE it is who we are evaluated against.

Scripture teaches;

Husbands are likened unto Christ when it comes to how they are to love their wives;

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Eph 5:25)

Christ is our example when it comes to humble service;

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. [15] For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. (Jn 13:14-15)

Jesus is our example when it comes to loving one another

Walk in love as Christ also hath loved us (Eph 5:2)

He is our example even of suffering;

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: (1 Pet 2:21)

He is our example of selflessness;

Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. [3] For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. (Rom 15:2-3)

In fact, There really is no part of our lives that we are not to do so in the likeness of the Lord Jesus Christ

He that saith he abideth in him ought himself so to walk, even as he walked (1 Jn 2:6)

So then, when it comes to recognizing the full measure of a man, Jesus Christ is the example to “BEHOLD”.

Turn to John 19:1-5

[1] Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. [2] And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, [3] And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. [4] Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. [5] Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! (Jn 19:1-5)

At the end of his account of the Gospel, the apostle john wrote this final sentence;

And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen. Jn 21:25

Such is the impossible challenge to speak of the fullness of the nature of the man we will behold this morning. I intend therefore to limit myself to that which I can see only in the passage, and I would think it challenge enough for every man to replicate.

Firstly we see him as;

The Source of Assurance

Romans 15:4

This is the third of a four part mini-series on Romans 15:4, a passage that underlines our Church and tells of the focus with which we have to bring to all people the hope we enjoy. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. This morning has its focus on the SOURCE OF ASSURANCE, that is that it is the Scriptures Bring you patience and comfort that you might have hope.

There is a reason the scriptures do so is because they are the infallible words of God. In other words, they stem from his mouth and provide to us the comfort we need and the patience we need to endure the trials and difficulties of life and also share that comfort to the world. We do this because we trust him at his words. We believe God. We have our trust in God and not man. We believe his words are true, absolute, infallible and can NEVER be wrong. This is the ONLY Logical conclusion that can come from a GOD INSPIRED BOOK. 

My consideration then of this passage is only that of the few words in the midst of it. That we through patience and comfort of the scriptures.

So in this I see

1/ The Inclusive Assurance “That we”, 

2/ The Means Of Assurance “Through” 

3/ The Gain of Assurance “Patience and Comfort” 

4/ The Source of Assurance “The Scriptures” 

The Inclusive Assurance

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope

“that we”

Paul writes with an inclusivity that cannot be missed, “that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope”.

There is a common reference that pertains to all those who have been born again. To all those that have been saved from their sin, there is an inclusion of experiences that we all share in, and in this passage its speaks ALSO to the inclusion of a common hope.

As I mentioned last week, this is not a “hope so” hope, this is not a “I hope I win the lottery” hope, this is a certain expectation of that which is not yet seen(Rom 8:24, Heb 11:1 etc).

This HOPE is common to all those to whom Paul is addressing in this letter, all those who have trusted in Christ to save them from their own sin.

It is important to understand that none of the letters in the New Testament are written for a lost world, they are ALL written to those who share in a common hope of Salvation, those who have believed the Gospel, those who have come to know they were lost in their sin and believed that Jesus Christ died for them on the crossand rose the third day according to the Scriptures.

This is not to say that the lost of the world cant glean anything from the Bible. The Gospel is clear for all people, but it is to say that this text is NOT written for their encouragement, but for those who share in that HOPE.

The lost world sadly has not such hope to look forward to apart from Christ.

To the Thessalonians Paul wrote;

  “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.” (1 Thess 4:13)

It is interesting from that text that there is one thing the world can be considered to have in common, it is “no hope”.

Turn to Ephesians 2:12-13

Speaking of the time when you and I once shared in the hopelessness of the world, Paul wrote to the Church at Ephesus saying;

12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Proverbs 14:32 says 

The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death

If there is indeed anything the lost of the world currently have a share, it is, not only the sense of

Written For Our Learning

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.  (Rom 15:4)

When considering the first part of this verse last week we had seen the infinite value of “that which was written aforetime”, the Scriptures, the words of God.

We take for granted that there is nothing that the Bible does not speak to, either directly or indirectly; 

that it had an evident effect upon mankind; upon most particularly the Western worldas it did on a people in the past, the people of Israel.

Just as the advantage of the Jew was to have the “Ordinance of God” so it is to the world who today have “The whole counsel of God”. 

We saw that Light came into the world in the first century, but it was soon plunged into darkness; Satan working in the large portion of the world to keep the Bible locked away in an unknown tongue so that the advantage of the Jew could not be known for the learning of the gentiles.

The dark ages lasted a thousand years until a handful of brave men ventured to unlock the word of God from it’s language prison, and gave it the freedom of the tongues of the world.

It was John Foxe, the author of Foxes book of Martyrs, who spoke of the spread of the word of God like the ashes of John Wycliffe, who’s bones were burnt by the Pope because he translated the Bible away from the locked language of the Latin into English, and who commanded his ashes to be thrown into the river swift;

Foxe commented;

“And, like the River Swift which runs into the Avon and the Avon into the Severn and the Severn into the Bristol Channel which empties into the oceans of the world, so did the proliferation of God’s Word go to the ends of the earth.”

 Now the common man in the street had the word of God in his own language and the light had a chance to shine.

We saw the effect this had upon mankind originally. It is not a coincidence that the renaissance, the Re-Birth of civilization, occurred a few short years after the Bible was given to the people, God promised that his words would have such an effect from the very beginning. 

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. 10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, 11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; (Deut 6:6-11)

Moses summarized the blessing of the people following the words of God and he laid it out for them as it also applies to us today. If they follow the word of God, as they did, they would be blessed, as they were, and as WE ARE.

But Moses also laid out that which would occur if they turned away. He spoke of both the blessing and the curse, both of life and of death and witnessed the truth of it as he still does to this very day;

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days:….” (Deut 30:19-20)

Now we are today the witnesses of the abandonment of the word of God in the world that began to manifest itself during

We Would Know Nothing If It Were Not For The Bible

We would know nothing if it were not for the Bible.

Without the Bible we would know nothing about

So the Bible speaks of the hidden things like bacteria, even Atoms in Hebrews 11:3 where the “things which are seen were not made of things which do appear”

It took ten minutes for crane crew to hook up and take the statue away to loud cheers.It reminded me of the statement of Queen Amidala in the Star Wars series, “So this is how liberty dies… with thunderous applause”

Fullness in Christ

(Reading: 2Corinthians 5:11-21)

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”  2Corinthians 5:19

Introduction:

Today’s message is very much a gospel message.

In our reading today [vv 11-21] the apostle Paul highlights [among other things] the spiritual changes that occur in an individual who is born again by virtue of the gospel of Christ. What we realize is that only the Lord Jesus Christ has the power to change you eternally.

One of the keys to our passage today is the realization that as “new creatures “old things are passed away….and all things are become new.”

Within this parameter of “all things”… the born again believer is given

a new heart and a new nature

a new perception of who Christ is

a new [restored] relationship with God, through Christ.

and a new purpose in Christ

I must specify “given”; even as the apostle Peter was given a revelation of who Christ is:

We remember the account: 

When…Peter confesses that Jesus was the Christ, to which he responds:

“…Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”  Matthew 16:16-17

As Jonathan Edwards puts it: this revelation was given immediately by God and not obtained by natural means; it is divine light. 

The focus of our study today is verse 19

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”  2Corinthians 5:19

We have 4 points today [complete with sub-points]

The Fullness of God in Christ:

The declaration

[turn to]

“To wit, that God was in Christ…”

Paul begins this verse saying:

“To wit” or in our modern vernacular  “that is to say”  

In other words “I want you to know…”

Verse 19 re-emphasizes and expands on verse 18 and [in a sense] explains how the aforementioned changes occur. 

“And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”  2 Corinthians 5:18-19

From our reading today we understand that a believer ought to have a changed perception or a new revelation of who Christ is. And not only Christ, but also those around them; as we will see later in our message.

Verse 16 explains this:

“Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.”  

2 Corinthians 5:16 

There’s a recognition that before a person is born again, his [natural] view of God, the world and the people in it, is completely different [after the flesh]. A person may or may not have believed in God. He may have had an opinion in regards to who Christ was; whether it be a great teacher, an ascended master or any of the other endless possibilities that people have conjured up. He may have agreed mentally to the notion that Jesus was the Son of God, the second person of the trinity. 

But think about it; who really knows a person except that person himself. This is exactly what the bible teaches:

“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.”  1 Corinthians 2:11-12

It is only through the Spirit of God that the Lord reveals his true nature; including that of Chr

For Christ Pleased Not Himself

1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2  Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. 3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. (Romans 15:1-3)

Bare ye one another’s burdens.

The consideration that I have as I look at this passage is that the entire focus of our lives is to be the exact opposite of how we usually live our lives.

We naturally live our lives selfishly, we live our lives putting ourselves first most of the time. Rare are the times when our thoughts are toward others and Paul makes it again clear in this passage that this is our duty in life.

Pauls life was this way.

Paul spent the balance of his days living his life for the sake of others, spending his life and his days with the consideration of the spiritual well being of others and not for himself. But in this passage he does not give us himself as the prime example, but Jesus Christ.

CHRIST PLEASED NOT HIMSELF!

“Ought”, A Moral Absolute

1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Its an incredible word “Ought”, it’s like the word “Should”, it’s an objective word not a subjective word. It’s not a word based on person preference, it’s a word based on an absolute authority.

To say a person OUGHT to do something presupposes a moral authority, a basis from which it stems. Which is why the question ‘Why ought I do such and so” would come up.

A reason is searched for that gives a foundation for the “OUGHT”.

“Why OUGHT or SHOULD I do that?”

The word ‘Ought’ originates from the English word ‘Owe’. If there is a debt we OWE, then we OUGHT to pay it, one naturally follows the other, it is absolute.

But the world now lives in a morass of self contradiction now that it has given up absolutes.

An absolute moral standard that has its foundation ONLY in an absolute moral authority. But the what disapeares when civilisation gives up God, they also give up the very foundation of morality, everything is relative…

And there you go, I just gave you a self contradicting statement that describes a lost world.

EVERYTHING is relative….EVERYTHING!… ? 

A relativistic, subjective society can never give you an OUGHT. 

They can have no absolute reason for saying you OUGHT to do this or that if they hold to no objective moral truths. And when this is taught in schools, it is a matter of time before entire civilisations collapse, and we are seeing it before our very eyes today.

In their Book, “Relativism, Feet Firmly Planted in Mid Air”, Dr’s Francis Beckwith and Greg Koukl  recall the LA Riots of 1992 saying;

“ As the buildings burned we watched with horror. Shops were plundered not by hooded looters but by families made up of mom, dad, and the kids— moral mutants on the shopping spree of their lives, giggling and laughing with impunity while stuffing their spoils into shopping carts and oversized trash bags. We shouldn’t have been surprised. During the L. A. riots these families did exactly what they had been taught. Nobody wanted to “impose” their morality on anyone else, so they learned that values are relative and that morality is a matter of personal preference. Make your own rules, define your own reality, seek your own truth. In the spring of ’92, thousands of people did just what we told them to do, and civilization burned.”[1]

We reject moral absolutes, we reject the absolute authority that gives foundation to the word “OUGHT” and “SHOULD”, and then we wonder how the world has turned upside down.

We lie but despise being lied to, we steal but think it unjust that people steal from us, we sware and take offence at a vulgar bumper sticker. 

We think there is no right or wrong but are the first to complain and not getting the correct change in a store or return a defe

Upholding One Another

Reading Romans 14:7-23

I have often spent time thinking about what my life would have been like had I not believed the gospel. I think of how my life has been so incredibly blessed and how different my life would have been had the Gospel not transformed me completely. 

Like many people my life was heading on a trajectory of potential tragedy, not as much in life but certainly the end of life. At the end of my life I would have found myself in hell waiting for that great Judgement for which I would give an account. I was created for a purpose, not my own purpose but the purpose of him in whose image I am made.

But God, through his infinite mercy had a couple of people present the Gospel to me over a period of thirteen years or so, and at 29 years of age I was born anew, a new creature, a new creation with new life and a purpose that I could see and trust in. It was like someone came into my dark room and turned on a light and I could see. That light would now never be turned off, Never!

There were people In the days of Old, and there a those today who think that abstaining from certain foods, not keep certain holidays, or not attending certain religious observances could take that all away. They feel themselves potentially injured if they don’t attend to these things, forgetting they are saved and kept by Christ.

Paul refers to them in this passage as those who are weak in faith.

But Paul also notes that those who are strong in faith, despising those who are weak and cause them to stumble, while those who are weak in faith judge those who have liberty. 

Yet between them NOTHING will change respecting their wonderful restoration to God, they are still free from the penalty of sin, Christ having blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross (Col 2:14)

Paul exhorts against attending to such “Doubtful Disputations”?

The answer he gives to replace these tendencies in this passage, is that we should Uphold One Another, not giving offence to each other’s conscience in such matters as these, but lift each other up and strengthen each other’s faith in love and the bond of peace.

Paul makes three arguments in this passage for why it is that we should Uphold One Another and set aside some of those things that might otherwise offend us. 

He speaks both to the weak and the strong in faith, giving at least three strong reasonings on why we are to let go of such things and encourage each other no matter where we are at in our faith.

6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. 8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.

9For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. (Rom 14:9)

All things are reconciled in Christ, he is the beginning and the end, he was given to the world that the world through him might be saved. We who have believed the Gospel, are reconciled to the Father through the blood of the Son, in this we are to be upholding one another. 

Each one of us do all we do unto the Lord, whether that be in our eating or our observance of days, or if it be NOT in our eating or observance of days etc;

Paul wrote to the Corinthians regarding this very thing respecting food, even food offered to Idols, saying; 

“But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse”
