This week Matt unpacks Luke 13:22-30 with stern warnings and a warm encouragement from Jesus. Jesus says don't procrastinate and don't presume.

Jesus explains the Kingdom of God with two short parables, showing it will grow from small to large in the world, and that once it begins it's work in someone, they will be completely transformed.

Jesus upsets the religious authorities by healing on the Sabbath again. Why does he seem to play fast and loose with Jewish religious rules? Because they have fundamentally misunderstood the basis for the Sabbath: a celebration of freedom rather than another burden. Jesus comes to bring freedom.

Jesus comments on two tragedies showing that it is not guilt and sin which lead to them, but at the same time warning that "unless you repent you too will perish." Only this bad news prepares us for the good news that Jesus came in order that no-one should perish.

Jesus tells us he comes not to bring peace but division - division because hypocrites reject his warning about the judgement to come. And yet his warning is also filled with hope since he himself will pay the debt that we could never pay.
