• An attempt to navigate life without Christ is as much a challenge as a four-year-old and calculus.

John 4:1-7

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."

1. Jesus had to pass through Samaria.

John 4:7-19

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock." Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true." The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

2. Jesus relentlessly pursues us regardless of the barrier.

To expose our deepest hurt is to reveal our greatest need.

John 4:20-25

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things."

3. What barrier are you attempting to hide behind?

John 4:26

Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he."

Christ wills to reveal Himself as the Messiah to a woman with five former husbands and is currently paying rent with her own body?

John 4:27-29

Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you seek?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?"

4. Shattered barriers translate into no barriers.

• The most extreme competitive events of our existence happen in our heads and hearts.

• Complete joy in our life is an outcome of an understanding of the supremacy of Christ.

• It is the bridegroom (Christ) who purifies the bride (the church) and not our human will power.

John 3:22-24

After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized (for John had not yet been put in prison).

1. The oldest of all struggles

John 3:25-26

Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him."

John 3:27

John answered, "A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.

2. God has always had a heavenly solution for our human dilemma.

God is sovereign so all of life is a gift, all gifts are of grace.

John 3:28-30

You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.' The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He must increase, but I must decrease."

John 10:3-4

To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

You don’t pray for humility; humility is a result of:

An understanding of your humanity

An understanding of the greatness of God

John 3:31

He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.

John 3:32-36

He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Next Steps:

•Prioritizing our life begins with the heart and not a list, so start with your heart.

• Surrender fully to God’s plan – not by human effort but through an understanding of His greatness.

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

• Grace not only covers the very worst of our lives but also covers those times when we have tried our best, and our best is not good enough.

• Have we overlooked the greater reality of who Jesus is for an instant reality?

• Family matters but not with this narrative

• The best is yet to come, the best is here.

John 2:1-3

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."

1. Jesus accommodates us with the gift of Grace.

2 Corinthians 9:8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

John 1:16

For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

John 2:4-5

And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

2. The greater reality of who Jesus is.

• “Woman what does this have to do with Me?”

Mark 3:32-34

And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you." And he answered them, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!

“My hour has not yet come.”

Miracles are not about us; they point us back to the one greater than the miracle itself.

John 2:6-10

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now."

3. Jesus brings the best to our lives.

The best flows from “the Divine Vessel” of Purification.

John 2:11

This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

Next Steps

• Open your heart and mind to the reality that grace not only covers your wickedness but your best efforts.

• Surrender the compulsion of your life to attempt to control everything and everybody.

• I believe and embrace the truth that Jesus does want to bring His best to my life.

That You May Believe Part 2: What Are You Seeking?

• We want to populate our personal database with information relating to Jesus; Jesus wants our hearts.

• The first step to understanding God’s plan for our life is an understanding of who Jesus is.

• Walking in God’s plan for our life involves more than just knowing God’s plan for our life.

• We don’t discover direction by seeking direction; we discover it through seeking Christ.

• Jesus knows us while we’re under the fig tree and still invites us to come and see.

John 1:35-39

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, "What are you seeking?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

1. What are you seeking?

Matthew 16:13-16

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

• You are the Christ.

• The Son of the living God.

• You are our Lord.

John 1:40-42

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas" (which means Peter).

2. The journey to discovering God’s direction for your life must include change.

John 1:43-46

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

3. Don’t ignore the obvious when it comes to God’s plan.

Jesus found Philip, Philip found Nathanael, Nathanael finds Christ.

John 20:21-23

Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld."

John 1:47-50

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these."

4. While on the quest for guidance never forget that Jesus knew you while you were under the fig tree.

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Jesus

John 1:51

And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

5. Stop agonizing over every step of your life, God has this.

That You May Believe Part 2: What Are You Seeking?

The Gospel of John is a powerful introduction to the character and nature of God through the Incarnate Christ. Fullness of life is only experienced through an understanding of God and the path to that understanding is Jesus. The Apostle John introduces us to Jesus not from just an academic approach but a very relational viewpoint. A true insider look at the Savior and rescuer of humankind.

• We want to populate our personal database with information relating to Jesus; Jesus wants our hearts.

• The first step to understanding God’s plan for our life is an understanding of who Jesus is.

• Walking in God’s plan for our life involves more than just knowing God’s plan for our life.

• We don’t discover direction by seeking direction; we discover it through seeking Christ.

• Jesus knows us while we’re under the fig tree and still invites us to come and see.

John 1:35-39

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, "What are you seeking?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and you will see."
