Remember Pt. 1: The Commonality of Community

Communion Service Today

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

Philippians 2:1-3

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

1. In Community, we have in common Encouragement in Christ.

2. In Community, we have in common the Comfort of God’s Love.

3. In Community, we have in common Participation in the Spirit.

4. In Community, we have in common Affection and Sympathy (Mercy).

Lamentations 3:22-23

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Philippians 2:4-8

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

5. In Community, we have in common the Centrality of the Cross.

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

The Fight Part 7: Prayer

We find ourselves almost daily in some kind of fight. This fight can involve our relationships, our physical health, our profession, or our emotional wellbeing. Regardless of our physical circumstances, we must engage spiritually if we are to be victorious. God provides us with the protective armor we need for the fight of our lives.

Ephesians 6:10-17

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

What is Prayer?

A. Prayer is varied

Colossians 4:2 ; Acts 1:6 ; Matthew 6:6 ; Matthew 6:9-13

B. Prayers are always answered by God

C. Prayer is our relationship with God

How does prayer keep us strong in the battleground of our relationships?

I. We root ourselves in His Love

II. We find His fullness dwelling in, through, and around us.

Ephesians 3:14-21

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

The more deeply the love of Christ is known, the stronger our relationships will be in this world.

Our relationships will remain strong if they are rooted in the love of Christ and not the circumstances of our life.

A cycle of rooting ourselves in love, finding his fullness through that same love we are rooted in, and conforming more to Christ and His Will.

We have to first be strong in our relationship with ____, if we want to stay strong in our relationship with ________.

III. We align our will with His Will.

Matthew 26:36-46

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray." And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me." And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done." And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."

Two things that stand out:

1) Where Jesus goes

2) What Jesus prays for

”Prayer is not about changing God’s mind… it’s about changing our heart” – C.S. Lewis

Prayer is another piece of the Armor of God.

Prayer is how we resist Satan’s lies, temptations, and attacks.

We stay strong in the battle ground of our relationships through prayer – rooting ourselves in His love, finding His fullness, and aligning our will with His will.

• We fight the enemy in a physical context with spiritual weapons.

• The Sword of the Spirit demolishes strongholds in our lives and captivates our minds.

• Jesus accomplished what we were unable to accomplish.

• The strategy of the enemy is for us to question God’s care and provision, have us shift our priorities, and mask our doubts and fears.

1. Our physical battles are won with spiritual weapons.

2 Corinthians 10:1-2

I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

• The Sword of the Spirit destroys strongholds in our lives.

• The Sword of the Spirit captivates our mind and brings it into obedience to Christ.

2. Jesus accomplishes what we could never accomplish within ourselves.

Luke 4:1-2

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.

Three tactics of the enemy and how Christ responds:

• The enemy wants you to question God’s care and provision.

Luke 4:3-4

The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'"

• The enemy is always attempting to alter your priorities.

Luke 4:5-8

And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." And Jesus answered him, "It is written, "'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'"

• The enemy wants you to mask your doubt and unbelief.

Luke 4:9-13

And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, "'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,' and "'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" And Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

Hebrews 4:11-13

Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

• We love the Word of God.

• We read the Word of God.

• We speak the Word of God.

• We stand firm in the Word of God.

The Fight Part 5: The Helmet of Salvation

We find ourselves almost daily in some kind of fight. This fight can involve our relationships, our physical health, our profession, or our emotional wellbeing. Regardless of our physical circumstances, we must engage spiritually if we are to be victorious. God provides us with the protective armor we need for the fight of our lives.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

“Why would the Holy Spirit compare a piece of weaponry like this to salvation? Because your salvation is the most gorgeous, most intricate, most elaborate, most ornate gift God ever gave to you!” - Denis Renner

The helmet of salvation designates and declares our position in Christ.

It protects us against discouragement.

One of Satan’s most effective weapons against us is discouragement.

We are called to adorn ourselves with perspective, with knowledge, and with truth.

Psalms 55:1-7

Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan, because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. And I say, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah

Psalms 55:8-11

I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest." Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace.

Psalms 55:12-15

For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God's house we walked in the throng. Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

Psalms 55:16-21

But I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

Psalms 55:22

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

The Fight Part 5: The Helmet of Salvation

We find ourselves almost daily in some kind of fight. This fight can involve our relationships, our physical health, our profession, or our emotional wellbeing. Regardless of our physical circumstances, we must engage spiritually if we are to be victorious. God provides us with the protective armor we need for the fight of our lives.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

“Why would the Holy Spirit compare a piece of weaponry like this to salvation? Because your salvation is the most gorgeous, most intricate, most elaborate, most ornate gift God ever gave to you!” - Denis Renner

The helmet of salvation designates and declares our position in Christ.

It protects us against discouragement.

One of Satan’s most effective weapons against us is discouragement.

We are called to adorn ourselves with perspective, with knowledge, and with truth.

Psalms 55:1-7

Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan, because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. And I say, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah

Psalms 55:8-11

I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest." Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace.

Psalms 55:12-15

For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God's house we walked in the throng. Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

Psalms 55:16-21

But I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

Psalms 55:22

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

We find ourselves almost daily in some kind of fight. This fight can involve our relationships, our physical health, our profession, or our emotional wellbeing. Regardless of our physical circumstances, we must engage spiritually if we are to be victorious. God provides us with the protective armor we need for the fight of our lives.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Are you ready to fight?

• As the church, we must allow Scripture to be the leading factor in how we view spiritual warfare and how we are to fight.

Ephesians 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Passive Faith vs. Active (Fighting Faith)

• If God is working (fighting), why do I need to?

•Promised Land Failure

1 Corinthians 15:10

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

“Whenever you do something that matters, there will be a battle. You will always face opposition. I tell myself all the time, If I’m not ready to face opposition for my obedience to God, I’m not ready to be used by God.” – Craig Roeschel

1 Timothy 6:11-12

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Ephesians 6:16

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Shield of Faith

The Roman scutum was a large shield that was typically 2 feet wide and 4 feet tall. It’s shape and consistency gave it the ability to withstand hard hitting strokes of a sword and deflects arrows.

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Examples of Faith and Divine Protection

• Passover

• Daniel

“Take up your shield of faith”

It’s to appropriate the promises of God from the gospel in our everyday lives while having confidence that he will protect us in the midst of battle.

“to extinguish the flaming arrows of the enemy”

• Flaming arrows used against the Roman armies were called plumbata.

Satan’s primary objective, to defeat you, is to distract you.

Question? What is it that is distracting you from stepping out in faith with confidence in God’s ability to see you through?

James 2:20, James 2:26

You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
