I recently returned from a 10-day tour in Egypt. It was spectacular! The itinerary was full of all the main tourist attractions in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Kom Ombo/Edfu. As well as, a three-day cruise on the Nile. I got to stand on the grounds of ancient history with all its unexplained mysteries. I couldn't begin to comprehend it all without going back to the Bible. It was there that I was reminded of how Egypt played a critical role in the history of the children of Israel. The children of Israel spent at least 400 years in Egypt. According to Genesis 15:12-13, Abram fell into a deep sleep and in verse 13 Scripture says, Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there." (NIV) We know for a fact that the biblical account of the Egyptians and the children of Israel presents a shared and intertwined history. Sometimes it's difficult to get up in the morning and get going. We all have our daily routines and if we are completely honest with ourselves life can become mundane. It's easy to feel as though we are stuck in a rut. What if we woke up each morning with the perspective that each day is a gift from God?  Each day brings new possibilities. We have 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, at least 30 days in a month, and 365 days in a year. Psalm 27:4 says, "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple." Wednesday, March 6, 2019, is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten Season. Christians will observe 40 days of Lent and reflect on the death and burial of Jesus Christ. Then, with much hope, we will look beyond Christ's crucifixion and prepare spiritually, emotionally, and physically to celebrate Resurrection Day/Easter Sunday. Jesus Christ sacrificed and withdrew into the desert for 40 days. As our perfect example, we too can fast from food, festivities, or anything else that falls into the categories of sin and distractions. What will you give up? Matthew 4:1-3 says..."Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Personal devotion matters. Mornings, afternoons or evenings with Jesus is daily encouragement and food for our soul and spirit. It’s like putting on spiritual armor to face spiritual battle fraught with daily challenges. There's nothing worse than existing through life without hope or peace. Peace with our Heavenly Father is being in relationship with Him. He loves us! We can also experience peace in the midst of our struggles. True peace only comes from Jesus Christ who says, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27 (NIV). We also have hope in Christ, who is an anchor for our soul. We all have melodies from God in our hearts that can be shared through writings, speaking, stories, poetry, and songs. Whatever our means of expression is, God will assure us the opportunity to share with others what's on our mind and within our heart. In Ephesians 6:19-20 it says, "speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. " (NIV). Let's embark on a journey and share our melodies to the Lord. And through that process, remember there is a place for humor, laughter, and tears of joy and sadness. New Year's Day marks a time for new beginnings. In the United States of America, January 1st is the 1st day of a new calendar year. The celebration usually starts on new Year's Eve. And, at 11:59:50 pm, we begin the countdown --10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and then we shout Happy New Year!! When the clock strikes 12:00 midnight, a new day, month, year, decade, and era has begun. Time has existed since the creation. And we, the human race, are driven by our internal clockwork. What are you and I planning to accomplish in 2019. Whatever it is, it will take deliberation and a plan of action. Some of us will succeed by God's standards. Others will not. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." The Christmas season is upon us! Many will celebrate the birth of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on December 25. His birth was foretold by the prophets of old way before it came to pass. The New Testament records the fulfillment of these prophecies, thus making the age-old Christmas story biblical and true. Jesus the Son of God was born of a virgin in a manger and came from Bethlehem. Jesus the Christ came in the flesh to save sinners. How does your family celebrate Christmas? Upon conception the gift of life is in order. But, how long will we live? These past few months, I have been to more funeral/memorial services than I care to count. My family members, friends and colleagues are dying! In the midst of it all, I asked this question, "How is it that my 97 year old aunt is still living and my cousin's daughter who was age 35 died?" After much sadness, weeping and prayer, I landed on my feet, standing firmly on my biblical foundation and the promises of God. There is comfort in knowing that when we go home to be with the Lord our work is complete. "The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid?" Psalm 27:1 (NIV) God knows the exact day and hour He will call His children home. It's not an hour too soon nor a day too late.
