Matthew 6:16-18 NIV

"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Fasting creates the opportunity to view circumstances differently

Fasting isn’t something done to gain attention from others, but rather to focus our attention on God.

Fasting always goes with Prayer - Fasting without prayer misses the point.

Pt. 4

There are dimensions of God that will never be revealed to the casual follower of Christ, rather those dimensions are revealed to those that passionately pursue Jesus.

Fasting should be an expectation in every believer’s life.

Instead of viewing this time of fasting with fear, struggle or dreading it…we should go into this time with joy and expectation.

1 Samuel 14:1-14 NIV

One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, "Come, let's go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not tell his father. Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men, among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod's brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the lord's priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left. On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba. Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, "Come, let's go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the lord from saving, whether by many or by few." "Do all that you have in mind," his armor-bearer said. "Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul." Jonathan said, "Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come to you,' we will stay where we are and not go up to them. But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the lord has given them into our hands." So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. "Look!" said the Philistines. "The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in." The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, "Come up to us and we'll teach you a lesson." So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, "Climb up after me; the lord has given them into the hand of Israel." Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

Jonathon did something that didn’t seem to make much sense

Jonathon didn't see what couldn’t be done, he saw what could be done.

Jonathon’s focus was on the Lord.

Prophetic Word

When you walk in His wisdom, hope is a natural byproduct.

God is simply looking for someone who is going to trust Him.

Maybe the question we need to ask isn’t; Has this night become less Holy? Rather, have we become less Holy in our approach to this night?

You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

God wants to pour into you so that you can be generous.

God has given us two hands—one to receive with and the other to give with. We are not cisterns made for hoarding; we are channels made for sharing. -Billy Graham

God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them. -Augustine of Hippo

God wants us to be generous on every occasion and in many ways.

Only giving even the smallest amount you purpose to give of your income, and give this regularly; and as God is pleased to increase your light and grace, and is pleased to prosper you more, so give more. If you neglect in habitual giving, a regular giving, a giving principle based upon Scriptural grounds, and leave it only to feeling and impulse, or particular arousing circumstances, you will certainly be a loser. -George Mueller

Our Generosity turns into Thanksgiving and praise to God.

Big Idea///

When we operate in a spirit of generosity it positions our heart away from greed?

Where do we take it?

Understand that everything you have belongs to God.- Choose to begin to put God first in your finances.- Start now. (in this season that is most difficult.)- Teach your children. Bring them into the process.-

I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditures excludes them. -C.
