Scars Part 2
Speaker: Pastor Brandon Pardekooper
Originally Recorded: 3 April 2016
Who Was Peter?
Peter was the first disciple called by Jesus
Peter was passionate evidenced by things he said that often got him into trouble
Peter was the one who was ready to fight for Jesus when he was arrested in the garden
John 18:15-18
Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17The servant girl at the door said to Peter, "You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not." 18Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
Definition of Shame
the painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior
Luke22:61-62ESV
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.
John21:15-17ESV
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." He said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
End of Peter’s story?
For some of us, this is where our story has stayed
We have allowed a moment of decision, of mistake, of disgrace, of disappointment to define our lives
This wasn’t God’s plan for Peter, nor is it his plan for you
3 x 3 x 3 of Restoration
Peter denies Jesus three times
Jesus asks Peter if he loves Jesus three times
Jesus commands Peter to feed his sheep three times
Jesus is always more focused on redemption and restoration than punishment and shame
The Big Idea
We have to let go of the shame that is scarring us, and allow Jesus to restore us to the man or woman he has called us to be.
Closing Thought
The only thing Jesus wants to know is…do you love him. The rest falls into place
Peter's Restoration
Beginning on the day of Pentecost, Peter became one of the most powerful leaders of the New Testament Church. Simply because he was able to embrace Christ's forgiveness, and not let the scar of shame define him. (Acts 2:14-41)
