One of these ideals is that we grow through close relationships. These relationships can be found in marriages and families, and Psalm 68:6 rejoices that "God sets the lonely in families" so that all of God's children can benefit from the blessings of close relationships. Another of these ideas for marriages is an equal partnership between the spouses, described in these passages from Genesis, a partnership benefitting from the differences between the individuals in a marriage. We want to build our marriage relationships on God's wisdom and catch ourselves before we confuse cultural expectations about relationships with the dreams for marriage that God shares with us.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! In today's Bible passage, Moses is tending his father-in-law's sheep in the desert after running away in fear from Egypt. While in the desert, God grabs Moses' attention in a bush that was burning but not burning up. In the resulting conversation with Moses, God tells Moses he will lead Abraham's descendants from slavery in Egypt into a land that God promised. A key verse in this story is Exodus 33:15, where Moses pleads with God, "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here."

Horizon West Church is approaching a similar challenge regarding a plan to build a permanent building on the property we bought last year. We, like Moses, need to commit ourselves to following God's leadership and listening for what God wants us to do. As the poet wrote in Psalm 127:1, "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain."

Of much greater importance is how each of us respond when God tries to get our attention to call us to serve God. We, like Moses, need to recognize God's presence, trust in God's promise, and follow God's plan.

The "soap opera" of Joseph's life included frequent deceptions and half-truths, paralleling stories from the lives of his father and grandfather. God is at work, even with these questionable actions of Joseph and his brothers. Shiloh explains for us in this story three important truths: God's faithfulness is not contingent on our faithfulness. Life's trials are not an infringement upon God's call on our lives. Our blessings come from (a lot of things but mostly from) how clearly we see.

Last week, we saw how Joseph allowed God to use him, even when he was in jail, to provide answers to two fellow prisoners. This week, we see Joseph, still in jail and forgotten by the one he helped -- it's not fair! Still, Joseph was faithful to God as he waited two more years, and God was actively working good for Joseph even when he couldn't see it. Pastor Socrates gives us three habits to practice to strengthen our faithfulness, particularly in times of waiting: thanking God for every good thing, noticing when God transforms a setback into something good, and sharing with others how God is working in your life.

As Pastor Korey teaches us, just because God is silent doesn't mean that God is absent, and we also should not be absent in following God's calling to serve others.
