Horror Movie Review, The "You Run" Podcast episodes

  • Eden Lake (2008)

Lock your car doors and check your maps, because this week the You Run Podcast is heading out to the British countryside—and things are getting incredibly bleak.

We are diving deep into the 2008 psychological thriller/survival horror Eden Lake, starring a young Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender as a couple whose romantic weekend getaway turns into a relentless, terrifying fight for survival against a gang of deeply sadistic local teenagers. Directed by James Watkins, this film is a brutal masterclass in tension, isolation, and worst-case scenarios.

⚠️ A Note for Our Listeners: Eden Lake is an intensely visceral and emotionally exhausting watch. It deals heavily with themes of youth violence, extreme cruelty, and psychological torment. If you haven't seen it yet, please be advised that it contains highly distressing scenes.

Once we finish dissecting the relentless dread of the movie, we lighten the mood with our favourite segments! First, we check out what you had to say with our 3-Word Reviews from the community. Then, it's time for a high-stakes game of Would You for $10 Million?, where we put Marc in the hot seat to find out exactly what horrific, embarrassing, or downright questionable things he is willing to do if the price is right.

Did you think the ending of Eden Lake was as devastating as we did? Tune in to find out!

  • A Nightmare on Elm St 4: The Dream Master (1988)

Grab your coffee and don't close your eyes, because this week we are diving back into Springwood! On this episode of the You Run Podcast, Scott and Marc are tackling 1988’s neon-soaked slasher spectacle, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

Directed by Renny Harlin, this is the instalment that officially turned Freddy Krueger from a terrifying, shadow-dwelling bogeyman into a pop-culture, one-liner-spouting MTV superstar. Packed with legendary, surreal dream sequences—from the waterbed trap to the infamous "roach motel"—this film split the horror community right down the middle.

And speaking of split opinions... things get heated in the studio today. Scott absolutely loves this movie, championing its peak-80s style and wild practical effects. Meanwhile, Marc absolutely hates it, ready to tear down Freddy's playground brick by brick.

    Special Guest Alert! 🎙️

To help us settle the score, we are joined by the incredible Kate from Down Under, co-host of the Pizza Bones True Crime podcast! Kate brings her signature Aussie charm, true crime insights, and her own thoughts on Freddy's fourth outing.

But can she survive the ultimate test? Kate steps up to face the legendary, pressure-cooker Quiz Meltdown—a gauntlet of trivia that remains completely unbeaten. Will she be the one to finally break the streak, or will the clock claim another victim?

    What’s in This Episode:

    • The Review: A deep-dive discussion on The Dream Master. Is it a masterpiece of 80s cheese, or the moment the franchise lost its bite?

    • Movie Trivia & Facts: We scatter in some wild behind-the-scenes facts. Did you know A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 was actually the highest-grossing film in the franchise until Freddy vs. Jason? Or that the screenplay was written during the 1988 writers' strike, meaning much of the movie was made up on the fly?

    • Three-Word Reviews: We read and react to our listeners' brutal, hilarious, and spot-on three-word movie reviews.

    • The Unbeaten Quiz: Can Kate survive the Meltdown?

  • The Sadness (2021)

You voted for it, so now you have to live with it! This week on the You Run Podcast, Scott and Marc are diving headfirst into Rob Jabbaz’s ultra-violent, face-melting 2021 Taiwanese horror sensation, The Sadness.

We follow a young couple trying to reunite across the city of Taipei amidst a sudden outbreak of the "Alvin Virus." But forget standard, brain-dead zombies—this virus mutates the brain's empathy centres, turning everyday citizens into sadistic, bloodthirsty sadomasochists who act on their absolute worst, most depraved impulses with a big, terrifying smile.

Is this a masterful, adrenaline-fueled masterpiece of modern body horror, or did the relentless, mean-spirited depravity finally push the boys past their breaking point?

Plus, we play a special survival game: Can Marc actually survive a zombie apocalypse in The Sadness universe? Knowing these zombies aren't just hungry, but deeply, aggressively sadistic... things are going to get ugly.

We’ll also dive into a fresh batch of listener voicemails, drop some production facts, and check out 3 Word Review

  • Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988)

Lock your doors and hide your power tools, because the You Run Podcast is diving headfirst into the neon-soaked, blood-splattered world of Fred Olen Ray’s 1988 trash-masterpiece: Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers! 🪚🩸

We’re breaking down this legendary slice of 80s exploitation from top to bottom. When a hardboiled private eye goes looking for a runaway teen, he accidentally stumbles into an ancient Egyptian cult of chainsaw-wielding sex workers. We pay tribute to the ultimate scream queen Linnea Quigley, bow down to the master of the saw himself, Gunnar Hansen (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and debate whether this micro-budget flick is a work of camp genius or just pure cinematic trash. Expect breakdowns of the ridiculous practical gore, the hilariously hardboiled dialogue, and our final, definitive ratings.

But the horror doesn't stop with the credits! Stick around after the review because:

  • Wishmaster (1997)

"Be careful what you wish for..."

This week, we are diving deep into the ancient, ruby-encrusted world of Wishmaster (1997)! While critics might have slept on it back in the day, the You Run Podcast crew is planting our flag: this movie is an absolute, criminally underrated 90s horror classic.

Directed by special effects legend Robert Kurtzman and executive produced by Wes Craven, Wishmaster delivers the ultimate playground of twisted logic and gruesome, practical VFX. We break down Andrew Divoff’s brilliantly sinister performance as the Djinn, that jaw-dropping statue-coming-to-life party scene, and the incredible parade of horror cameo royalty (Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, and Tony Todd, just to name a few!).

Special Guest Alert! 🚨To help us break down the legendary practical effects, we are joined by the incredibly talented special effects artist Alex Petty of AMPFX Studios! Alex gives us an insider's look at how 90s practical gore holds up today and shares his expert take on the movie's wildest transformations.

  • Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Today a boat trip is in order as we look at one of the most confusing and possibly the worst instalment in the Friday the 13th franchise.

When a new group of teens head to New York on a luxury cruise ship called the Lazarus to celebrate their graduation they are not alone.

Jason has stowed away, as has his toxic avenger looking child spirit. Now with what appears to be the ability to fully teleport Jason takes out as many teens as he can before they reach their final destination.

We will give some credit as the shots in Time Square are iconic but the rest of this movie is a really boring watch.

Thankfully in it being so atrocious we do have a lot to talk about. We also scatter in some cool production facts which rounds this off as a solid episode.

  • Obsession (2026)

It is officially the biggest box office shocker of the year, and you lot completely obsessed over getting us into the theatre for it. This week on the You Run Podcast, Scott and Marc are breaking down Curry Barker’s micro-budget horror sensation, Obsession (2026).

We follow Bear’s ill-advised decision to break a branch off the "One Wish Willow" just to win over his crush, Nikki. It starts as a hopeless romantic's dream, but quickly spirals into a deeply unsettling, wish-forced, supernatural possession nightmare. We are dissecting that viral, panicked "no, no, no" dating scene, debating whether Bear is the most evil villain in horror history, and trying to figure out how a low-budget indie managed to outpace Star Wars and Masters of the Universe at the box office.

Beyond our main review, we dig into the wild behind-the-scenes production facts of how this Gen Z YouTube director conquered Hollywood, open up the voicemail box to see how much our Halloween 3 episode annoyed you all, play a quick game around Marc's wishes and break out the VHS from the Crypt.

Grab your headphones and hit play—just be careful what you wish for.

  • Alien Resurrection (1997)

Back into the world of Alien today with a film that suffers immense criticism for the decisions it made.

We look at the issues that many people have and share our takes on what is a flawed but fairly solid addition to the Alien franchise.

We also share some cool movie facts throughout the review and your thoughts in three word review. Not to mention a thrown together game that turned out far better than we could have imagined.

  • Halloween III, Season of the Witch (1982)

Halloween III is undeniably one of, if not the most divisive film in the Halloween franchise.

While some hail it as the best in show and the realisation of John Carpenter's original plan to make the Halloween movies an anthology of terror. Others feel it is a poor sequel that offers nothing to the franchise and should not be included when talking about these movies.

Today's episode gives you both of these opinions as we thrash out what we loved and hated about the film. We cover Dan, alcoholic womaniser or divorced Dr living his best life? How did they get that stone from the UK to the US? Why do they ooze orange juice? and most importantly, why don't we have more movies like this?

We also have 3 word reviews from our fabulous listeners and an interactive Halloween game that just adds to Marc's annoyance.

Be sure to leave us a review wherever you can!

  • Mortal Kombat (1995)

WARNING - THIS EPISODE CONTAINS VERY STRONG LANGUAGE AND INSULTS AIMED AT EACHOTHER THROUGHOUT. IT IS ALSO AN EPISODE WHERE BOTH US, AND OUR GUEST GOT RATHER DRUNK AND SILLY!

IF THIS IS NOT SOMETHING YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IN AN EPISODE MAYBE SKIP THIS ONE!

You know the episode is going to be fire when we have no choice but to open the episode description with a disclaimer...

We are joined by Jim of Jim's Retro Emporium who is not only a close friend of the show and me and Marc but also the biggest Mortal Kombat nerd on the face of the earth.

Today love all around as we dissect and discuss the peak of 90's cinema. Yes we know the film is objectively terrible but the memories and nostalgia it carries are not. In fact those feelings are so strong we all reverted back to 13 year olds and hurled insults at each other for 30 minutes.

Anyway despite the warning this episode is a flawless victory and will go down as one of our all time favourite recordings!
