    Intro

Welcome to Kevin and Brian’s Horror Bulletin podcast, recorded live in Bluehouse Studio. We’re changing things up a little with this, our 23rd episode.

Horror news will now come regularly on our Twitter feed and Facebook page instead of in the podcast.

To compensate, we’re going to expand our discussion of the movies a little more to the point that there will be spoilers. And we’re adding a new movie category. In addition to a Universal movies classic, contemporary classic, and a very new horror movie, we’ll be discussing an international horror movie. Since we’re in the United States, we’re defining international as any other country in the world.

And we’ll also pick a short film to watch and discuss. That’s a grand total of FIVE reviews each week.

So, this week we’ll cover the Universal Studios movie “The Raven” from 1935, the contemporary classic “The Caller” from 2011, discussion of the short film, “Count to 10”, the very new horror movie “What The Waters Left Behind” from 2017, and our international feature “The Wailing” from 2016. Now actually, “What The Waters Left Behind” is an international film too, but we’ll get it straight with our next episode.

And there will be spoilers for all these films in our full discussion. If you haven’t seen them, and you want to go in blind, now’s your chance to back out because here. We. Go!

Universal Studios Classic: “The Raven” (1935)

This week, after the news, we’ll cover the Universal Studios movie “The Black Cat” from 1934, the contemporary classic “The Skin I Live In” from 2011, discussion of the short film, “Affirmations”, and the recent “Death House” from 2017. News Features

    1. The Box is coming back again, shiny and new. A Hellraiser project is officially in the works with “The Dark Knight" writer David S. Goyer on the case. Being revived through Gary Barber’s Spyglass Media Group. Barber described the project as a “loyal, yet evolved reimagining of the 1987 original featuring the Cenobite called Pinhead and the resurrection of Frank who opened the box with painful consequences. After nine other movies plus numerous graphic novels, it will be interesting to see how things will start over again. We’ll be watching for more details as they form.

    1. Timely news since we just watched and discussed “The Invisible Man” from 1934 in our last podcast. Talkiesnetwork.com reports that Storm Reid will officially by join Elisabeth Moss as a co-star in the remake of “The Invisible Man” in the works. Director Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) will be weaving a tale centered on Moss’s Celia who, after hearing about the news of her abusive ex-boyfriend’s suicide, attempts to rebuild her life for the better. But she begins to suspect he’s not really dead. Maybe he’s just… Invisible. We can’t wait to see how it compares to the original, but that’s all we know for now.

    https://talkiesnetwork.com/2019/05/10/a-wrinkle-in-time-star-storm-reid-joins-elisabeth-moss-in-the-invisible-man-remake/

    1. Putting the grim back in the Brothers Grimm, a new translation of the classic fairy tales restores the glorious blood and horror of the originals. Never before published in English, the first edition of the tales from 1812 reveals an unsanitized version with princes impregnating, not just rescuing, their damsels, parents trying to murder and/or eat their children, and children killing each other. Such as in the charming tale “How the Children Played at Slaughtering” along with 155 other stories, with many illustrations. Full of murder, suicide, crime, mutilations, monsters, assault, and chaos, these might not be the best bedtime stories for the kids, but it sounds like just the thing for adult horror fans and folks to want to hear some storytelling from over 200 years ago. It’s available on Amazon in ebook, hardcover, paperback, and audiobook formats, and we’ve included a link in the show notes. As well as a link to coverage in The Guardian with more book details.

    1. If you’re in or going to be in Los Angeles between now and June 16th, you may want to check out “I Like Horror” at the Desmond. "I'm a huge fan of all of these films," experiential artist Maximillian, who devised the pop-up horror house, tells Newsweek. "Some would be considered straight-up horror, some maybe not so much. But they all have scary elements. They all have an overarching dark universe. And I really wanted to touch the different horror fandoms." If you can’t make it to LA, the artist says he’d like to take it on the road, so you may get a chance in the future.

    1. Vox has quite an article titled “Inside the haunted doll markets of eBay and Etsy”. Haunted doll sellers and collectors say buyers should beware. Because possessed and haunted dolls aren’t just the realm of movies like Annabelle and Chucky. They’re real. “Etsy and eBay list thousands of dolls purportedly inhabited by everything from evil witches to judgmental spirits that might call you fat to young children and fairy spirits. Most haunted dolls sell for around $50 plus shipping, but the most highly prized ones are priced well into the four figures. There’s a formula, too, for how they’re sold: Each listing contains a detailed overview of the spirit’s life story, details of said spirit’s death, and a description of their personality. Dolls are labeled “active” or “highly active” if paranormal phenomena are said to occur frequently in their vicinity. Some are advertised as being able to move objects, make noises, or communicate via telepathy or Ouija board, while others are meant to act as creative muses, play matchmaker by revealing potential lovers in dreams, or emit positive energy.” You really should read the article to learn the stringent testing process that some dealers use to assure that the dolls are genuine. Skeptical? A believer? Well, decide for yourself.

    1. A gunslinger from the Old West comes back from the grave to stop a gang of werewolves in the present day. If that sounds like something you’d like, you’re in luck. High Moon, the western horror movie, is coming. Written and directed by Josh Ridgway, the movie follows a mysterious gunslinger named Colt (played by Chad Michael Collins) with a mission to kill every living werewolf (or “howler”) after a gang of lycans killed his wife. All that happened centuries ago, in the mid-1800s, but things take a major twist when Colt and the werewolves come back from the grave to create chaos in a small town. There’s a trailer to give you a meaty taste now. High Moon will be released on VOD/Digital on May 14 and it’s already available for preorder on Amazon and iTunes.

    1. The DC Comics monstrous hero Swamp Thing is coming to DC Universe on May 31st, and it sounds like this take on the tale leans toward horror. EW reports that the show is produced by James Wan, and the promo has the same vibe as many of his beloved horror movies: Lots of quick cuts and frantic screaming as people try to make sense of the supernatural. Check out the article with more details, and see the trailer for yourself that’s just been released. It looks like it’s going to be a good one.

    1. The only thing better than Bruce Campbell hosting Ripley’s Believe It Or Not might be the legendary horror movie icon Robert Englund hosting a show called “Shadows of History”, also to be on the Travel Channel. With the help of historians and scholars, Englund takes frightening, creepy, and unsettling news stories from long ago and brings them back to life. “How can you make fascinating and petrifying stories even more scary? Add the genius of Robert Englund,” said Jane Latman, general manager, Travel Channel. “As if tales of flying monsters, zombie cannibals and ghost ships were not enough, we are cranking up the volume for maximum impact. And our fans are going to go nuts for this legendary actor.” Is real life scarier than horror? Watch with us when the six-episode series makes its premier sometime later this year.
