  • Valentine and My Bloody Valentine

Love is in the air this week, that special holiday where you give someone your heart. Or take theirs by force if they won’t give it to you. Yes, Valentine’s Day. So after some news, we’ll cover the drive-in classic, “Valentine (2001)” followed by our discussion of the short films, “ My Sweet Valentine” and “Valentine’s Die”, and a little more recent, but still not-quite-new horror feature film, “My Bloody Valentine (2009)”. Open that box of chocolates, pour yourselves some wine, and relax. Here we go…

    News Features:

    1. The new horror series "Welcome To Daisyland" will debut its first episode February 14th, 2019 on the BlackBoxTV channel on YouTube. Per the about page on their website "WELCOME TO DAISYLAND is a horror anthology series set behind the gates of the Daisyland Carnival, a music & mayhem shadow show. The carnival is a small but legendary one that began its run sometime in the early 1970s. No one knows for sure exactly when, only that is has appeared every fall, across the country in a series of vacant lots and overgrown fields, far from the reach of city lights and the law." Their website has trailers, behind the scenes teasers and lots more information about the show. Definitely looks work checking out!

    https://www.youtube.com/user/blackboxtv

    2. I knew that somebody had to have done it, and I was right. Candy.com sells what they proclaim to be the world's largest gummy candy heart. Life-sized and weighing in at 1 and pounds, this cherry-flavored anatomically-correct sweet delight can be yours for only $15.95. Cheaper on bulk orders if you want to give one to all of your friends, add a little fake blood, and walk around the park gnawing and slurping.

    3. Happy Death Day 2U gets a 2019 Valentine's release with its official opening February 13th, 2019. A sequel to the 2017 film Happy Death Day, it promises more of the dark humor, scares, and gore that made the first one a pretty solid hit. Tree is transported back to the repeating day where she dies over and over again, only this time there are friends stuck in the loop with her. Warning, there is a serious spoiler of the first movie in the preview for the sequel. It also looks like you would get much more out of the sequel if you see the first one first. That said, it looks great and worth seeing for sure.

    4. A trailer for the new Child's Play movie for 2019 has been unboxed (see what I did there), and it looks really awesome. They look like they are going back to the beginning of things for a reboot. It's a bit of a teaser, and Chucky is pretty well hidden in the trailer, but it's enough to get you hooked. It's not clear that there's even a supernatural element to Chucky now, and they may have gone in the direction of science fiction horror. This time around, the Buddi dolls are high tech robot companions made by a Kaslan Corporation, and they have a terrific tie-in website. You can see the trailer, read about the specifications of the Buddi dolls, read about other high-tech products by Kaslan, and hear a special message from founder Henry Kaslan himself.

    5. For serious fans and collectors of The Walking Dead, AMC's official merchandising has just released a limited edition resin statue of Negan in action head-bashing a walker and fighting off two others for only $449.95. Limited to 1,000 copies. Of if you'd like something a little less expensive and more practical, they have an amazing assortment of stuff from shirts, to mugs, to toys, to lamps. Even if you don't buy, it's a fun site to poke around in. Just don't get bit.

  • Ravenous Double Feature!

This week, after the news, we’ll cover the drive-in classic, “Ravenous (1999)” followed by our discussion of the short film, “tEXT”, and our modern-horror feature film, “Ravenous (2017)” Get your fudgesicles and orange-sherbert push ups, turn up the volume, and relax. Here we go...

    News Features:

    1. Deadline.com reports that in part of the Syfy networks effort to expand into horror, a Chucky series is coming to television. They have the rights. They are forming a plan. The project comes from the Chucky movie franchise creator/writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner as well as TV writer-producer Nick Antosca (Hulu’s The Act). We will wait impatiently for our one of our favorite evil dolls to live again on the small screen. https://deadline.com/2019/01/chucky-tv-series-adaptation-syfy-don-mancini-david-kirschner-nick-antosca-1202544301/
    2. A new tabletop role playing game Thousand Year Old Vampire by Tim Hutchings is due to be released June 1 of this year. Currently in a Kickstarter, the page has detailed information, graphics, videos, and a free downloadable PDF Playtest that is lengthy and involved. It looks like a very cool game that will bring another way to play first person with the lore. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/timh/thousand-year-old-vampire-a-roleplaying-game
    3. Sarah Michelle Gellar will be tapping into her roots as a commercial and horror-movie actress Sunday February 3rd with a premier of an Olay skin care commercial. The star of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the Grudge films is in Olay’s Killer Skin campaign. Teasers have shown Sarah at home under threat from a masked intruder. Will she have to fight, run, or just help them out with skincare? The teasers look pretty creepy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=18&v=UOMuwbTEzxI
    4. The Verge has confirmed that a new adaptation of The Stand is coming as a ten-part series on CBS All Access. A solid project with Stephen King himself excited and giving his full support, the undated project will be directed by Josh Boone with primary writing by Boone and Ben Cavell. It was previously done as an 8-hour miniseries on ABC in 1994, and Warner Brothers made a launch attempt some time ago that was to be directed by Boone but never went anywhere. This resurrection sounds like a sure thing. https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/30/18204443/stephen-king-the-stand-cbs-all-access-10-episode-miniseries
    5. And speaking of more Stephen King related news, the sequel to The Shining is set to be released from Warner Brothers November 8, 2019. Doctor Sleep will star Ewan McGregor as the adult Danny. Directed by Mike Flanagan who most recently brought us Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, the story is set years after the events at the Overlook when a damaged Danny with gifts dulled by age and alcohol becomes involved with a young girl coming to grips with a Shining of her own. The novel, released in 2013 is available if you want to check out the story ahead of time. Link: https://amzn.to/2Wxylck Or just wait to check it out in theaters. 6. Bonus cool weirdness - Self-proclaimed Tinker Gnome Jared Gray has made the best out of the pain-in-the-backside condition of sleep apnea by modifying his CPAP machine to look like he’s been attacked by a facehugger from Alien. His blog gives a detailed account of how he did it, with plenty of photos. While it’s not quite practical or ready for mass production, it’s very awesome and looks great. Check out his blog at https://www.jaredisgray.com/tinker-gnome-cpap-facehugger/

This week, after the news, we’ll cover the old drive-in classic, “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” followed by our discussion of the short film, “The Storm”, and our modern-horror feature film, “Hellraiser: Judgment.” Grab some snacks, turn up the volume, and lean back and relax. Here we go...

    News Features:

    1. The classic 1960s Hammer Film thriller The Witches makes its Blu-ray debut March 19th, 2019 from Scream Factory. The release includes a new audio commentary with filmmaker and historian Ted Newsom, as well as the featurette on the women of Hammer Film and theatrical trailers. Fans can pre-order their copies now by visiting https://www.shoutfactory.com/product/the-witches?product_id=7008Haunted by the terrors of her experience with African witch-doctors, school teacher Gwen Mayfield (Joan Fontaine, Rebecca) accepts an appointment as headmistress at the Haddaby School run by Alan Bax (Alec McCowen, Frenzy) and his sister Stephanie (Kay Walsh, Stage Fright). Gwen initially revels in the peacefulness she has found in the quiet English countryside but soon begins to sense “undercurrents.” Before long, a local boy falls into a coma and Gwen discovers a voodoo doll impaled by pins. The danger that follows brings her face to face with witchcraft as a series of disasters unfold and lead her to the horrible truth.
    2. Eli Roth’s History of Horror Documentary series is coming to Shudder in February 2019 (if you missed in on AMC in it’s initial run in October) An in-depth look at the history and influence of horror with each of the seven episodes focusing on a different topic like vampires or zombies. Slashers gets a two parter. https://www.imdb.com/news/ni62350472?ref_=nm_nwr2
    3. Guillermo del Toro leads drive to save horror bookshop Dark Delicacies - Pan’s Labyrinth director joins Neil Gaiman, Cory Doctorow and other readers in crowdfunding rescue of ‘amazing quarter-century institution’ Dark Delicacies in Burbank, California, has been running since 1994, but co-owner Del Howison said the business had been put under enormous financial strain over the last few years, thanks to “skyrocket[ing]” rents. The director called on fans to help via a gofundme and the call was answered, raising $24,000 in four days https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/jan/23/guillermo-del-toro-leads-drive-to-save-horror-bookshop-dark-delicacies
    4. The 2019 Oscar nominations have been announced and as usual there are very few horror film nominations. The only one appears to be A Quiet Place being a Best Sound Editing nominee. In response, Bloody Disgusting has made their own all-horror Oscar nominations and they are pretty awesome with Hereditary, Mandy, Annihilation, A Quiet Place, The Endless, Revenge, Halloween, and Upgrade all vying for best picture - as well as a full complement of movies filling out all the other categories. https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3542825/oscar-nominations-2019-bloody-disgustings-horror-edition/
    5. For Lovecraft fans, we have a treat coming. Popsugar reports that a film adaptation of the H. P. Lovecraft horror story The Colour Out of Space begins production in February and is aimed to be completed by the end of 2019. "The Colour Out of Space" is a short story written by Lovecraft in 1927. The story follows a family who moves to Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter, a meteorite of sorts crashes on their land, but it's not any ordinary rock. It begins to "infect" the town; the food that grows is inedible, animals and livestock unravel, and locals either go insane or die. We watch as the family, from the patriarch to the children, slowly crumbles to dust. The film will star the one and only Nicolas Cage and will costar Joely Richardson, Tommy Chong, Elliot Knight, Julian Hilliard, and Q'Orianka Kilcher. The cast will team up with the producers from Cage's last major romp, Mandy, and Richard Stanley will take the helm as director. https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/What-Horror-Movie-Color-Out-Space-About-45705765
