Melissa Curtis, a former middle school teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, with all but 12 months suspended, for sexually abusing a 14-year-old student in 2015. Curtis, who was 22 years old at the time of the abuse, pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offense on June 20, 2024. The abuse occurred over several months and took place in various locations, including her car, the school classroom, and her home. The victim, who was in eighth grade and volunteering for an after-school program run by Curtis, reported that he had sexual intercourse with her more than 20 times during this period. Curtis also provided the victim with alcohol and marijuana before engaging in sexual acts.

After serving her 12-month prison sentence, Curtis will be on five years of supervised probation and will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years. She is also prohibited from having unsupervised contact with minors, except for her own children. Curtis taught at Montgomery Village Middle School and Lakelands Park Middle School in Montgomery County Public Schools before leaving the school system in 2017. She was arrested in October 2023 after the victim came forward with the allegations.

The investigation and subsequent charges included multiple counts of third and fourth-degree sexual offenses, as well as sexual abuse of a minor. Authorities have encouraged any other potential victims to come forward.

Rapper NBA YoungBoy, whose real name is Kentrell Desean Gaulden, has pleaded guilty to charges related to his involvement in a large-scale prescription drug fraud ring operating out of his home in Utah.
